Moving to Bergen

Hi,all!

I have some questions, if you folks could provide me with some insight, it would be much appreciated.

I've been contemplating for quite some time(on where to move after living in the USA for many years), and after visiting Norway (Bergen and Oslo) that I would like to move to Bergen. I have been to a couple other countries in Europe that were on my list, but they were a complete disappointment from what I had imagined.

I speak English and Polish (doubt the second one matters much) and am willing to learn Norwegian.

Some of the reasons I'd like to move are: (in no specific order) weather, culture, social net, the ability to work to live and not live to work, nature, fishing and so on.

As far as I can tell from the udi website. As an EU national I can stay in the country up to six months, and keep residing there as long as I have work (that's the plan). Also I must register with the police and file some paperwork before the three months are up. Is this all correct so far? Am I missing something?

Also read some stuff about paying taxes as a foreign worker. There is some stuff about having an identification number or a D(?) number. Which I also understand you need in order to open up a bank account or get a phone number. Is this something I can do prior to moving, since I don't have an address there?

Also, what are the realistic prices I should be looking at in housing? The aim is either a small studio, or some sort of shared housing. Preferably the studio being a better option. I have looked online at rentals, and just want to make sure what I'm seeing is what the going rates really are. Also how does the process look like when it's done online, as to how can the landlord vet the renter? If that's a thing I'm not sure here.

If you have anything else to add, or offer as advice, please do so!

Thank you.
