Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.9 "Rigid ZS-6" Review

I've reviewed the Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.9 "Rigid-ZS6" (High Contrast version). Great lens and really fun to use!

The Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.9 Rigid-ZS6 is not made for people looking for perfect sharpness or a clean modern rendering. The appeal is in its softness, glow, field curvature and sometimes swirly backgrounds. With the right subject, especially portraits, flowers and more layered scenes, it can create images with a lot of depth and atmosphere. If you can play to its strengths, it can be a lens that creates many bangers.

The only thing I'm not too much a fan of is the infinity lock when I use this lens on mirrorless cameras. I still think Light Lens Lab should create a new type of body with a lens tab and perhaps a slightly shorter throw.

I can recommend this lens to everyone who is looking for an extra option on the 50mm lineup with special rendering. It's not to everyone's taste, but a tool in your toolkit that could prove its use from time to time.

I built a Leica lens finder to help match people with the right M or LTM lens

Choosing a Leica lens can be surprisingly difficult. There are so many versions, generations and third-party alternatives, and most lens recommendations start with already knowing which lenses you should be comparing.

I couldn’t really find a tool that approached it from the opposite direction: starting with how you shoot, what kind of rendering you like, your budget and the practical things that matter to you.

So I built the Leica Lens Finder:

https://leicalenslist.com/leica-lens-finder

You can either answer a series of questions about things like focal length, speed, size, close focus, lens age, budget and shooting style, or simply describe what you are looking for in your own words. It then suggests Leica and third-party M or LTM lenses that could suit you.

It isn’t meant to declare that one lens is objectively the “best.” The idea is to help people discover suitable options, including lenses they might not have considered before. Also shows sales of specific lenses as well as price history and you can watch prices until they go down; you'll be notified!

It’s also quite fun to play around with, especially when you change one or two preferences and see how the recommendations change.

I’d love to hear what matches you get and whether they make sense. Feedback on missing criteria, strange recommendations or lenses that should be included is very welcome. This is still quite early so I can always adjust the tool over time based on your recommendations!

Thypoch Ksana 35mm f/2 Announced

The Thypoch Ksana 35mm f/2 just got announced. I’ve had the privilege to test out this lens. No money exchanged hands, and Thypoch won’t see this review before you do.

Pros
• nice color/contrast
• flare handling seems strong
• still has a modern look overall
• quite flat field curvature
• compact brass build
• close focus to 0.5m
• really solid value (USD 599, EUR 529)

Neutral
• golden coating flares are kind of the whole vibe here, but doesn’t happen often
• a little cat-eye bokeh at the edges
• less crazy sun-in-frame than the 21mm version

Cons
• corner sharpness at close range
• slight midzone dip
• very-very slight corner CA wide open
• aperture clicks sound kind of weak
• hood costs extra

What are your thoughts?

Thypoch announces 24-50mm f/2.8

Thypoch just announced the 24-50mm f/2.8 constant aperture lens. At just 432g, it’s a very nice alternative to the Sony variant or other prime lenses, especially for travel. I have not tested this lens but I’ve reviewed a couple of Thypoch lenses in the past and they’ve been great.

At EUR 539 / USD 619 at the Thypoch store, you can grab another 5% off using the code “LEICALENSLIST”.

This is in my opinion a good value for a 24-50mm zoom and I’m honestly waiting out for other reviewers to test this lens. Do you guys have any thoughts?
