How do you make a fictional religion for a fantasy story?

So I happen to be new to writing and I’ve been working on a fantasy story, but I kinda ran into a problem on how I can create a fictional religion. I’ve already been taking inspiration from real life religions like Catholicism and orthodoxy since there the two religions that interest me the most and because I happen to be somewhat educated on thomist theology.(no I’m not a scholar I just like learning theology)

Im hoping to get advice on how I can do it and what it takes to make a religion in a fantasy feel somewhat real and what should I avoid while I create the religion?

Thanks in advance to anyone who gives me advice I very much appreciate it

Never understood how someone could claim to be catholic and be something like goth or punk

I mean this in no disrespect to anyone but unless you believe in something like “death to the world” I can’t really see how you can claim to be something like goth or punk and catholic. Mainly because both goth and punk are historically anti authoritarian and were both made to be against church authority and most of Catholic teachings come from church and its authorities.

There’s also the fact that goth specifically historically takes a lot from paganism, occultism and often has progressive views and opinion that oppose church teachings.

But hey what do I know I’m just some random Roman Catholic guy on the internet and like the venerable Fulton sheen said “there’s always room for more hypocrites in the church”.

Most people nowadays are stupid and can’t defend what they believe, they just go off how they feel about something or what they hear…

Not trying to sound like an intellectual but most people I’ve debated in my college debate corse can’t defend their beliefs they just go off of how they feel without providing reason, logical or facts about there position.

I mainly debate religion in the class specifically Catholic theology, history and ethics and the majority of the time my opponent just relies on appealing to the audience, straw manning me or just lying about my position. And when it’s my turn to start criticizing their position they legit can’t defend it.

Edit: I see a lot of people shitting on me for my writing which in all fairness, yea you’re right, but in my defense I’m writing this as it’s like 12 am and I’m dead tired right now.

How can I write a cruel and apathetic character without making him unlikable or unbearable to read

I happen to be new to writing and I’ve been working on a fantasy and the I want my main character of the story to be a cruel and apathetic character but I’m worried if I write him like that and he is unlikable it might pulling people away from reading the story so I’m trying to avoid that.

Obviously he does change throughout the story but that’s only really until later on.

How does someone write a good fictional religion for a story ?

I happen to be new to writing and I decided to write a fantasy, however I’ve been struggling to try an create a fictional religion for the story I’m already taking a lot of inspiration from Catholicism and orthodox Christianity. Since I happen to be a thomist and happen to be pretty well versed on thomistic theology, history of the church and religion in general since I’ve been studying it since I was 12-13.

But I’m not sure what goes into making a fictional religion since I never done it before
