Is it possible to learn and study at university level without going through a University?

I really want to study English Language and Creative Writing but I cannot justify the £5k a year on open university. If I don’t care about the label and saying hey I have a BA, how realistic is it for me to study using libraries, YouTube and books and learn the same things as if I went to uni for 3-6 years?

I know the information is there but without a dedicated class or professor, how does one know what to do or study next? Who would critique my understanding? I’m trying to decide if it’s doable and if I should just start planning for Uni.

Info: I don’t qualify for any financial help, I work full time, am a mother and adult not living with parents.

Goal is to be a novelist and I know I don’t need degrees for this but I love to learn and study.

Update: WIBTAH if I demoted my bridesmaid two weeks before the wedding?

https://www.reddit.com/r/AITAH/s/7NWmEhTpca

This was the original post and most of you said I should tell her not to come or wait for her to flake.

I was still pretty upset by her original reply to me about making drama and not having the energy for my complaints, and fuelled by reddit, I finally messaged her back.

I told her to not worry about buying a dress or plane ticket and not to worry about coming either. My fiancée and I were upset by it all and wished her a good summer and apologised for causing her any drama. (Thank you to the multiple Redditors who suggested wording for the reply as I did borrow a bit.)

Her reply cemented my point and I can sleep easily.

She said she was not expecting me to be so emotional, especially since the fuss was about a dress. She said she wasn’t upset and wished me well and said she’s had a bad couple of months.

She told me I was choosing a dress over a human and said she wouldn’t fight me, said she bought my wedding gift last year and wished my fiancée and I to be blessed by god. Then that her heart was free of guilt.

I think she missed the point by quite a mile as this wasn’t about a dress at all but the utter lack of care or even a single “sorry” when I said I was upset by it.

All in all, it’s handled and it didn’t turn nasty. The wedding is still 2 weeks away but I don’t think much will come of this.

Thank you for all your comments.

WIBTAH for demoting my bridesmaid 2 weeks before the wedding?

I’m having a tiny intimate wedding and the guest list is curated with only our closest friends and family we see regularly.

One of my bridesmaids (we will call her K) is an eccentric character but has always been so sweet and kind and fun.

K and I met at an old job neither of us have anymore and none of the girls there liked her, only me. She moved to another country for work and since then we aren’t in touch as much but catch up on FaceTime every few weeks or so.

I asked her to come wedding dress shopping with me last year and asked her to be my bridesmaid. No gift or fancy proposal just a question and she said yes. She had flown in for the day and left again after.

Since then, the date has been set, the save the dates sent, my MOH has her dress and everything sorted. K complains that she doesn’t like the colours so I say she can have a different colour. K lives and works abroad so she can’t really come to any other social stuff and that’s fine.

K has repeatedly told me she wants to bring a +1. This is an intimate wedding so I declined since she wasn’t even seeing anyone. She has a history of being a tiny bit eager to date and ignores amber flags so yeah.

Fast forward to today. It’s 2 weeks to the wedding, I call K for a catch up and discover she still hasn’t got a dress (I’ve offered to pay). She hadn’t bought plane tickets yet to even attend the wedding.

I didn’t say anything on the phone we talked about other stuff which led to another upsetting conversation about her disagreeing with feminism but that’s another matter. This wedding has kicked my butt it’s so stressful and this nearly broke my resolve.

I got home and told my fiancée and he’s livid and doesn’t want her there but she’s my friend. I messaged her to ask her why she’s left it last minute and that it’s upset me and makes me feel like she doesn’t care.

K replied that she can’t cope with complaints rn and that I’m stressing over things I can’t control. Then said ‘with respect don’t make drama goodnight.’

I’m mortified and don’t know what to do. Should I remove her as a bridesmaid and potentially lose a friend?

Living room design help?

We want to upgrade to a larger L shaped sofa. We would like to keep the table but understand if it has to go as we can fit a smaller table in the kitchen. We want to replace or upcycle the tv stand and the tv can be wall mounted. Not keen on moving the piano as it’s a nice walk way from the hall to the kitchen. Also the rugs are temporary only
