Ep 726 - Dirty Uncle Death Dealer - Brunswick, Georgia

This week in Brunswick, Georgia, the discovery of two bodies stacked in a storage shed unravels the wild story of a strange family and a town that goes into lockdown mode. The man accused of these awful killings has an explanation, but it's as crazy as the actual murders and pretty hard to believe. In the end, we have no idea if this killer's sister put him up to it, or even if she tried to have another husband killed. What we do know is that doesn't seem to be a family that you'd want to marry into!

Rigor and Livor Mortis

I'm sure this has been talked to death but I got to thinking about rigor and how it works today. While Nysten's Rule depends on various factors, it's agreed that most often, rigor starts with the heart, works it's way up to the face/head, then the upper extremities, trunk, and finally lower extremities.

Looking at JB's autopsy report, they noted livor along her back and right side of her face. They also noted that rigor is mild in the elbows and shoulders, but more advanced in the lower extremities. This contradicts Nysten's rule, and while there are various environmental factors to take into consideration, is it unreasonable to consider this discrepancy supportive of the staging of her tied hands *after* her death? Or could it simply be the position of her arms above her head changing the expected progression of rigor? I was unable to determine definitively if livor was present in her arms, but should you expect a difference of livor in those limbs between above head vs at her side, or would it all just pool to her back regardless since she's lying on it?

There's so many wonderful people here who are far better informed/experienced than me, and since I have no one to obsess over this irl, I am hoping to hear your thoughts on this!

Idaho Murders Documentary - Fresh Air From Netflix

Maybe I'm in a minority, but I just watched it and thought it was really well done. It focused on the victims, they laid out their investigation very well, and they didn't give any concessions for what he did, or try to play any "what if" games on his guilt.

I really liked the Moscow Police Chief who described most of the investigation. He was their public relations officer at the time, and his skill in that shows. He defended the house mates a bit which I felt that a lot of the hindsight vitrol and accusations they received online were unfair, so I appreciated him for that.

Netflix has put out some real stinkers lately, documentaries that are needlessly confusing and misleading and missing important details to spark debate online *looking at you The Crash*. Very refreshing to see this one.

The video footage of the blood seeping down the foundation outside was chilling.

I understand the families position on wanting a why and not liking the plea deal, but I don't think there's really a why besides he wanted to. I know that's probably impossible to accept, that your loved one was basically chosen by lottery, at least if it's someone they knew you can find *some reason*. but it's nice to see them find comfort in each other and I wish them all the best while they process their grief.

As always, I'm interested in any pods or deep dives on this case my fellow crime addicts can recommend!
