PSA: Major Memory Leak on Windows App
Just a quick PSA because this was making me pull my hair out. The Apple Music desktop app on Windows 11 (latest version) has a massive memory leak that doesn't stop growing until you kill it. And of course, it's all "hidden" processes and doesn't appear in Task Manager.
How to check if you're affected
- Quickest way: open Task Manager → Performance tab → click GPU → look at "Shared GPU Memory" usage. Then quit Apple Music from the system tray (right-click → Quit, not just minimize the window) and watch that number drop. If it drops by several gigabytes, you've confirmed it.
- More precise way: open Performance Monitor (Win+R →
perfmon) → click the green + button to add counters → find "GPU Process Memory" → add "Shared Usage" and "Local Usage" → filter for the Apple Music instance and watch the values.
____________________________
This is the full bug report I sent to Apple if anyone is interested:
Apple Music for Windows allocates and retains approximately 12 GB of GPU-committed memory, comprising both GPU Shared memory (backed by physical RAM) and GPU Local memory (VRAM), while running in the background with no active media playback. This allocation does not appear in Task Manager's Processes tab, which reports only the process Working Set (~104 MB). The hidden allocation is visible exclusively through Windows Performance Counters targeting GPU Process Memory objects. On the test system (32 GB DDR5), this caused system RAM utilization to reach 91%. Terminating Apple Music immediately freed approximately 6 GB of physical RAM.
Observing the leak via Performance Monitor
- Install Apple Music for Windows and sign in to an Apple Music account.
- Open the application and allow it to fully load (library sync complete).
- Do not initiate any media playback. Minimize the application or leave it running in the system tray.
- Leave the application running in the background for an extended period (exact accumulation timeline not yet established).
- OpenWindows Performance Monitor(perfmon.exe).
- Add the counter
\GPU Process Memory(*)\Shared Usageand filter for the Apple Music process. - Add the counter
\GPU Process Memory(*)\Local Usageand filter for the Apple Music process. - Compare the GPU memory figures against Task Manager's reported Working Set for the same PID.
On a 32 GB system, Apple Music consumed approximately 37% of total physical RAM while idle and performing no user-visible work. The Task Manager Processes tab gave no indication of this; users cannot identify or attribute the RAM pressure to Apple Music through normal diagnostic tools.
On systems with 16 GB of RAM, this leak would consume the majority of available RAM, causing severe performance degradation, swapping, and potential out-of-memory conditions from a background process. The impact is proportionally worse for users who launch Apple Music at startup.
Because the GPU Shared allocation accumulates while the app is idle, users who leave Apple Music open while using other applications (creative tools, games, browsers) will see unexplained system-wide memory pressure that cannot be diagnosed from Task Manager alone.
New Flight Data Provider! Let us know how it is!
Hi everyone!
Last week we integrated our 2nd flight data provider. It should provide us with much more coverage for things like flight schedule information and real-time flight-status.
We need your help! If you notice that Tineo is missing (or slow) flight schedule updates or status, please let us know! Our goal is to integrate one more flight data/status provider (for a total of 3) for the best coverage. For that reason, if our current two providers miss anything, it would be very helpful for us to know so we can make sure the third one we integrate covers any other airlines / real-time status missing.
Thank you for reading! ❤️
New in Tineo: Lists and Journal for trip ideas, memories, and saved places (beta)
Happy 4th of July weekend for everyone celebrating!
We recently added more user-suggested features (thank you!).
- Added a new Library preview with tabs for Journal, Places, Lists, Attachments, and Books.
- Journal is for trip memories, tags, mood/weather, places, private notes, and Travel Book inclusion.
- Places and Attachments are starting to tie the memory side together, and Books is the early Travel Book direction.
- Support for exporting to excel, text files, and printing!
- Library -> Lists for bucket lists, restaurants, places to try, photo ideas, etc. You can check things off, reorder items, switch views, and export/print.
- Note: This is separate from the existing lists feature (trip-associated checklists). The trip associated checklists appear to all trip participants and show who checkmarked each item.
Coming soon: AI suggestions for lists/journal entries and Google Maps list integration

I believe I recall this being mentioned a few months ago and it being a pretty popular request. I made a simple demo animation in hopes that this gets more traction because, code wise, it's a very simple 1-2hr implementation (although I guess there might be SOME security concerns with fetching images/svgs/favicons? but probably not many)?
Also, I hope you like my beautiful art. Shoutout to DAVE TEARE and SAN JOSE MARIOTT if they're real people (or twins?) (i got the screenshot from 1P website lol).
PS: Has 1password ever considered open sourcing the UI-aspects (if it's modular enough to be separated) from the security/backend stuff so that developers can contribute to UI enhancements? Haven't really looked into the 1P dev APIs/SDKs just curious.
ALSO, WHILE I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, ANOTHER suggestion:
Auto-dismiss the “Save in 1Password?” prompt
- There’s no “Never ask” option today, so the save prompt reappears constantly. On test accounts or ephemeral/throwaway logins you never want saved, dismissing it by hand every time is a real annoyance. Add a per-site (or global) setting to dismiss it automatically.
[Changelog🛠] THANK YOU for the great Feedback, Ideas, and Reports! Mini-changelog.
Hey everyone! Just want to say a genuine thank-you. Your reports have been incredibly helpful and ideas have been fantastic, and a huge amount of what we shipped recently came straight from this community.
