Picture books about the WNBA/ female basketball players?

Hello!

I was wondering if you have any recommendations for children’s picture books, ideally for ages 5-9 ish, about women’s basketball? Preferably published within the last decade, that little girls might enjoy reading.

Thank you!

Any suggestions for European true crime podcasts? (Scandi, Italian, etc)?

Hello,

I listen to a fair amount of true crime podcasts. I prefer ones that are well researched and comment on society in some way, not too gore-y or serial killer-y, but I also prefer murder / disappearances / unsolved mysteries type stories to white collar crime.

I listen to a few episodic podcasts that talk about cases from all over the world, such as Redhanded and some others. I’m especially interested in stories from the UK, Scandinavia, France, and Italy. I think mostly because I live in North America and was born in the global south, so I feel a little removed from cases in Europe and know less about them. and the social issues there are harrowing and interesting to learn about without being utterly bleak.

I also find more complex cases like the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi really interesting to learn about. I also enjoyed A Most Audacious Heist about the theft of Empress Sisi’s jewels. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for European true crime podcasts (not just British), that are intriguing but not necessarily only about some serial killer?

Where do you actually get decent sofas?

I am going a little mad looking for furniture online. I’m moving to a new apartment downtown this weekend, and I don’t have any existing furniture to move apart from like one sideboard and a mattress.

Finding a good sofa is especially a nightmare. Right now, I don’t think I have much time to visit showrooms and wait for a customized sofa to be delivered to me, because I’m moving this weekend and will need basic furniture to arrive ideally within the first week or so. Ideally, I’d just order something online from a trustworthy company.

I don’t really want a super expensive sofa but I don’t want anything from IKEA or Structube either. Preferably something like $1000-$2000 and comfortable. Possibly with a chaise and in a nice shade of green or red (it is so hard to find a couch that isn’t grey beige or white for some reason). Where do you get nice sofas from? Do you have any recommendations?? Thank you!

What is it like living near Bathurst/ Wellington/ Niagara?

Hello! I just got an apartment close to the Bathurst St/ Niagara St area, not far from Portland / Wellington/ Front. I know that king west is notoriously a party neighbourhood and I was wondering if that extends to this area? Tbh I’m 27F and not a partier and I feel like I keep hearing I’m already too old for that crowd and that area lol.

The neighborhood south of King West and around Victoria Memorial square is pretty residential and seems quiet, just people walking their dogs. If you live there, do you like it? Does it get noisy in the condo / apartment buildings?

Shows about single career women in their late 20s to mid 30s?

Hey,

I’m just wondering if there are any shows like this I don’t know about. Preferably the main character or characters are women in their late 20s to mid 30s and the story doesn’t revolve around being obsessed with dating or marriage or feeling “behind” in life.

Just middle to upper middle class women living their lives. Preferably in cities and with interesting or fancy-ish careers. Something like SATC but less focused on relationships??

I have watched New Girl, Parks & Rec, B99, the Mindy project, some of the bold type. I like the aspirational vibe of these but I don’t like how a lot of other shows about women in this age group are all about being desperate for love and marriage.

Does it make sense to double major in environmental studies and pol sci/ IR?

Hello!

Just wondering if this combination makes sense and if anyone has done it before?

Also, what kind of career options are there usually with an environmental studies degree?

I’m interested in government and policy roles but I also have a passion for wildlife and the environment. I did not take any biology or chemistry courses in grade 11-12, so I’m not sure I could do any of the ecology or environmental science programs.

I think doing pol sci or IR could help with government roles related to the environment, and leave the option open for law school or a masters in policy later. I’m not particularly good at math so I think it’s best to steer clear of math heavy programs. Just looking for advice! Thanks.

Any good political / strategy/ lawyer shows?

Hi,

Recently, I’ve been into political television shows that aren’t too melodramatic or based on modern real world politics, but have some element of political strategy and drama. Can be modern or historical. I also don’t mind some recommendations for lawyer shows (just not Suits).

Some political shows I’ve watched recently are The Diplomat, Borgen (danish), The Thick of It, and I’m currently watching The Newsroom

I’ve liked the lawyer shows: The Law according to Lidia Poet (Italian, historical), Lincoln lawyer, anatomy of a scandal (British), and I’m slowly making my way through The Good Wife.

I also liked the high stakes, strategic aspects of shows like game of thrones, black sails (soo underrated), Medici, Peaky Blinders (haven’t finished it). So I don’t mind anything along those lines either!!

Thank you

Murder mystery with someone who can see ghosts

Preferably a female investigator/ someone investigating a mystery with some sort of paranormal ability like the ability to see and speak to ghosts. Modern or historical fiction. Thriller or cozy or gothic. Would be cool if there are any historical flashbacks of the ghosts’ lives like in BBC Ghosts or AHS Murder House. Romance is optional (with a human preferably, but with a ghost is fine) but it would be interesting if some kind of close connection with a ghost character was explored

Looking for a career transition after a significant gap. Which of these would be a decent option?

Hello,

I’m 27F. After I finished my undergrad, I interned and worked at a few major publishing and media companies in PR/ Marketing. However, due to a series of personal issues and moving internationally and back, I was unable to work over the last 2 years.

Unfortunately, I’m the sort of person who is cut out for unstable careers. For now, I have familial and financial support, but I really want to be financially independent in the long run.

I am willing to go back to school or to volunteer, or take on part time work or do certificates. I am not that passionate about marketing, and I’m not cut out to be a publicist. Some possible career I’d probably be good at include:

Less education commitment but possibly unstable:
- corporate/ internal comms at a non-profit, government organization, museums, healthcare, etc
- media production (?)
- fundraising/ grand writing for a nonprofit?

More significant educational commitment
- going to law school and becoming a lawyer
- policy / research work after doing a masters in public policy or international relations, etc.
- social work (BSW or MSW?)
- becoming a teacher (bED?)
- becoming a librarian or archivist (MLIS?)

Or something else along those lines.

I really don’t know much about the job market in any of these areas. I am aware that these are not the most stable career paths or they require educational and financial commitment and a few years of unpaid or underpaid work to get ahead. But I also know that in the long run, I’m not going to be happy with a career that isn’t fulfilling in some way. If you have a career in any of these areas or similar (public facing, writing/ research heavy, public sector or public institutions, creative workspace, etc.), please let me know how it’s been for you, what the outlooks is like, and if you do (or don’t) recommend going down that path. Thank you!

Hello.

Im considering majoring in Pol Sci and History to eventually go to law school. I was wondering if anyone with these majors or IR had any general recommendations or suggestions for how to make the most of your time as a student and not miss any opportunities, or how to study efficiently etc?

Also, I was wondering if there were any books, journals, podcasts, research, experts, etc that you frequently referenced to help you understand the subject more or to study? I’m currently a permanent resident but I haven’t lived in Canada for super long so I’d appreciate any suggestions on how to learn about this from a Canadian context? Thank you!
