Crosstalk anyone?
I'm doubting how much appetite for crosstalk there is. I'm not super familiar with it, but have heard it pop up in the context of comprehensible input a few times.
I thought to myself that this could be a useful addition: we could offer learners to match them up with a native speaker of their target language for a crosstalk session.
I saw some initiatives pop up that are trying to do that, but couldn't find one that has gained traction (might have missed it though)?
We're in a great position to get something like this truly off the ground as we already have a few thousand of people on the platform for each of the many languages we offer (and we know their rough level since crosstalk likely isn't super useful at the absolute beginner level?), who might not have heard about crosstalk as a concept but could benefit from it.
Any interest in that?
Offering: German, Dutch | Seeking: Rioplatense Spanish
I'm a native German speaker with near native Dutch and interested in speaking practice with Argentine or Uruguayan people as I'm focused on Español Rioplatense. I hover around B1 level in Spanish. Comment if you're interested and I'll DM you!
8,000 level-graded Italian videos from beginner to advanced
Hi everyone! My co-founder Roman and I started Reelang a few months ago.
It is a completely free catalog of around 8,000 Italian videos (and growing), graded by difficulty from beginner to advanced. It's mostly videos from native speakers that just happen to be a bit slower and easier, and some content made for beginners. We've built it to be a fun scrollable feed of videos that adapt to your level as your understanding get better, that allows you to track progress over weeks and months, and a lot of helpful learner features like Smart Subtitles (which highlight which words are common and rare in Italian, so you can focus learning the ones that you'll see a lot) and blurring out burned in subtitles (so you can watch a first pass and see what you understand without being distracted by captions you can't remove).
If you have any ideas at all for how we could improve, DM me, we're all ears!
Se preferite usare il sito in italiano, abbiamo anche una versione italiana: 🇮🇹

How do you use word frequency list as absolute beginner (e.g. conjugations)?
I'm starting to learn Romanian (TL) and found a word frequency list but noticed a lot of verb conjugations end up low on the list?
If I focus on e.g. Anki decks with word frequency I'm a bit worried I might miss important condition concepts that are fairly common in aggregate but each individual verb doesn't make it into the list.
To take a Spanish example:
Puedes recordármelo?
It's the infinitive form combined with two attached object pronouns (enclitic pronouns) and that as a concept is common but it would land faaaaar down the word frequency list.
Does anyone have a clever way to work around this? Are there lists that account for this available somewhere online? I checked and couldn't find this.
Video retention in a slow niche (language learning)
I'm interested in your ideas and experiences. I recently started a language learning TikTok/Insta with short clips for language learners (German).
How can I retain people with short-form vids if my niche *requires* slow and deliberate speech in an environment where things are super-fast paced?
Things I'm already experimenting with:
* Starting with a strong hook
* Selfie close up on face during hook
* Title composition/overlay explaining what you get (Slow & Easy German, topic X)
* Sound effects at the beginning
If anyone has ideas or input, I'm super interested to hear it! Thank you!! 🙏
Is using content in plain/simple language a helpful language learning tool?
I was wondering if anyone has experience with using plain, simple language versions of websites or content in their language learning practice (TL), and why it's helpful, or not?
I noticed that even in more underserved language there are often simple news programs from public broadcasters that seem aimed at people with learning disabilities (e.g. Tagesschau in einfacher Sprache news in Germany). Also with AI I tried popping an article into ChatGPT and ask it to rewrite it in simple/plain language. It'll refuse most of the time because of copywright, but when I got it to work it was helpful.
Was wondering if anyone had experience with it and can recommend/discourage going down that path?
What tends to get in the way when you watch comprehensible input?
When you watch comprehensible input videos in your target language (TL), what usually makes the experience difficult or frustrating?
Many a question have been asked and answered here about CI in general, so I'm not trying to answer that or argue it's the best or worst method in general. I'm interested in what gets in the way *if* you use CI as one of the "tools in the tool belt" for your language learning practice, so from those who do like it.
I'm trying to figure out if there are ways to solve those issues and make better videos (for my own CI channel) or a better player experience for it (so ideas that aren't already covered by e.g. Language Reactor or similar tools).
Interested in your thoughts!
When watching comprehensible input videos, what gets in the way most?
If you're watching videos to learn languages, what are some things that get in the way to make that experience better.
We're working on making the experience of watching comprehensible input easier, better and faster, and I'm interested in your ideas for what commonly gets in the way or where you get stuck?
What's your favourite comprehensible input channel on YouTube/TikTok/Instagram?
With videos that are completely in Thai, so no English explanations. Could also be some native speaker who makes slower/easier content not targeted at learners specifically!
Thanks in advance for your tips!
