King Kugo is ready to dominate the arena!
The two raiders looked miserable as they walked back to the shore. Yet another unsuccessful raid, yet another couple of friends lost, yet another - they stopped abruptly as they spotted the man that was waiting on their path. A full head taller than them, bulging muscles glistening in the evening sun.
"You two! I am defenseless! Capture me!"
They looked at each other nervously.
"You... what?"
"I said I am defenseless! I am also outnumbered! Capture me and take me to your ship!"
The man made a step towards them and they backed off.
"I... listen, mate. We don't want no trouble alright? We'll just go and leave and -"
"No. You will capture me and make me your slave. Or else!"
They grabbed their rusty spears tighter as they considered their options.
"Alright, uhm. Would... would you mind putting on these shackles?"
King Kugo had always been a showman. There was no hunt too dangerous for him, no bear too big to slay, no river too fast to cross, no tree to tall to climb. He was the center of attention in his small tribal village. The applause and admiration from his relatives and friends could only satisfy him for so long, and one day he got word of a building in a distant land called an "orena" or something, where brave men and women fight each other in front of large crowds to earn glory and fame. He thought a slave becoming the king of this orena would make for a good story, so he let himself get captured by a raiding party from the north.
Strong and athletic and already an experienced fighter when he became a slave, he quickly began turning heads. He had a natural instinct for making fights dramatic. Close calls, narrow victories against all odds, inventive finishers... all this combined with the physiology of a young god of war and the hair of a goddess of love: the crowd admired him!
A couple of years later he would earn his freedom in the grande arena of the Imperial capital. He had reached it all. Everyone knew his name. Everyone knew of his achievements. And yet he felt hollow.
Too detached from his emotions to understand that no crowd in the world would ever be able to fill the hole in his heart that a distant father had left, he traveled to the one place in the world where even bigger stories get written: the cursed City of Sorrows.
