Hot milk on cereal

OK, I can’t be the only person that thought of this

If you like to have hot milk on your cereal, and you have a coffee machine, then steam the milk with the coffee machine

You can stretch it out make it fluffy and delicious

So much better than doing it in the microwave or in a pot on the stove

BWF tournament players walking on to court

I know it's totally innocuos, but it just seems weird and a bit icky having the players hold hands with children as they enter the playing arena.

Option 1 and option 0 on Beolab 5

Not sure if this belongs here….

How’s this for weird.

I have Beolab 5’s with a BeoSound 5 and they play right channel high. Drives me crazy.

Beolab 5’s are on option 0 and turn on with the Beosound 5.

BUT if I put the BL5 on link option 1 (and turn them on with the radio button) they play balanced and sound way better.

Then if I change them back to option 0 and turn them on with the Beosound 5 (the way they were before) they sound perfect, just as they did when they were previously on option 1.

What in this process of changing them to option 1 and then back to option 0 is making them perform correctly.

They’ll play fine for a day or two like this then I’ll need to go through this process again.

I should mention that they are connected with digital coax and fully wired powerlink. They are mark 1.

The physics of it all

So i was talking to one of my badminton collegues the other day and we were watching another member of our club play smashes and he really gets the shuttle moving. We also noticed that he holds the grip a bit short - so we figure that the shorter grip means he can get the head moving faster..

So the question was raised, is it better to hold the grip in the middle to maximize leverage at the cost of a bit of speed, or hold it a little shorter and reduce some of the leverage for speed..

Or are we missing something altogether?

Tower of Power and Generations in Jazz

A match made in a big tent in a paddock.

I am a life long fan of Tower of Power. After being introduced to them in 1991 as 16 year old budding trumpet player, I have been obsessed

It started in 1991 with the opening bars of the A Little Knowledge Is A Dangerous thing from the album Monster On A Leash and I was hooked. (Also turns out the title of that song is pretty lucky mantra for life)

As a Tower Of Power fan you learn to be patient. Album releases are often many (many) years apart and living in regional Australia the hope of seeing them live (as a 16 year old) was not even worth dreaming about.

Over the years I purchase every new album on CD and gradually collect the older albums. THEN I start collecting vinyl and pick up all the back catalog on vinyl (except for Monster… that one is hard to get on vinyl)

Jump forward a bit (or a lot) and in 2016 TOP are announced to play the Caloundra Music Festival and that’s it. The dream I dared not to have as a teenager was going to come true.

Olivia and I made a holiday of it and hearing Tower of Power was everything I could imagine and much much more. I quietly vowed to myself if they ever come to Aus again we are going again, no matter where they play.

And in 2019 that happened. A short 2 (or 3) stop tour with a gig in Melbourne and Sydney plus a music store opening with just the horns which was amazing. 🤩

So I drove to Melb to see them play then Olivia flew to Melbourne and we both caught a plane to Sydney to see that show too. No point talking about how amazing they played because that’s just what they do. These were smaller intimate club type venues and nothing like what happened last night.

TOWER OF POWER at GENERATIONS IN JAZZ.

Honestly I still can’t believe this happened. 4000 kids and screaming for the best soul and funk band on earth - in a tent. There was nothing intimate and close about this. This was huge.

But let’s take a step back for a moment. I was lucky enough to hear the sound check. That was an eye opener. Emilio is very much the boss. He controlled it, made sure everyone had exactly what they need. It was organised, precise and efficient with no stone left unturned. This was totally worth it. And the sound team knew exactly how to respond to what the players want. I’ll be approaching sound checks differently in the future.

So we get to the gig. Got there early to get good seats (we purchased VIP but still wanted the best we could get)

The set opened with the unmistakable We Came To Play and they really did. From the first moment the tent LIT UP.

4000+ kids who I’m guessing, know very little about TOP were into it from the first moment to the last. I hope for that hour and half they experienced just some of the joy that Tower Of Power have bought me through my life.

No words really describe the experience. It was loud, brimming with energy and deeply musical. After 58 years TOP still brings passion and respect to every song.

There was no highlights because there was no lowlights. It was all just one big magical and surreal moment. To have my favorite band play virtually in my back yard was something that I never thought would happen. I was 14 years old again, and I think every time i hear Tower Of Power either on a recording or live, I’m always 16.

So a huge thank you to Tower Of Power for accepting the invitation to play at Generations In Jazz. I reckon there are about 4000 more TOP fans as of last night.

And an equally huge thank you to all the organisers at Generations In Jazz. None of this happens without your passion for this event.

You’ve created a deep memory for this 50(ish) 16 year old.
