Flat Earthers in Sci-Fi

Do you think there are any flat earthers in the world of The Expanse or in Star Trek’s Federation?

Are there any folks on Earth who deny that anyone lives on Mars or in the Belt and thinks it’s all just a big UN-run hoax?

Do you think there’s anyone on Earth in Star Trek who believes the earth is flat and that all the aliens running around are just humans in makeup or perhaps alien species from beyond the ice wall?

I would like to think that everyday space commerce would kill this idea once and for all, or that a society truly as enlightened as the Federation’s would have purged that nonsense, but there is little about the current state of humanity to convince me with certainty.

USS Enterprise in Minecraft (Work in Progress)

My kids got me into playing Minecraft, and ever since, I've had this idea for a build. I once built this in a creative world, but really wanted to have it in my survival world, so I’m using mostly wood and stone rather than concrete and other materials. I’ve made significant progress, but there’s still a long way to go and a lot of materials to amass since I am building it at 1:1 scale. (I’m using the 1974 Franz Joseph blueprints as my guide.)

I think the coolest thing about this project is that you really get a sense of the scale of the Enterprise.

Sovereign Citizens and Guardians ad Litem

Came across an interesting New York case (5712 Realty LLC v Ricketts, 85 Misc 3d 867 [Civ Ct, Kings County 2025]) in which the judge does a fairly comprehensive review of sovereign citizen legal shenanigans. The court wonders whether the solution is to appoint a guardian ad litem for the sovereign citizen, given that the sovereign citizen belief system could be "a falsely held fixed belief, which means that it is not amenable to change in light of conflicting evidence [and therefore] it could constitute a delusion." (Id. at 870.)

It's an interesting reflection, which you can read at https://www.nycourts.gov/reporter/3dseries/2025/2025_25012.htm

Hurricanes on a Flat Earth

Just saw this post on Threads and was surprised to realize that I hadn't seen much discussion around this seemingly irrefutable point in these FE conversations. A lot of talk about the sun, buoyancy, etc., but I've never seen the hurricane point before.

“Contracting” to Drive

Has this issue ever come up before?

Has anyone ever responded to a SovCit who argued that he was “traveling” and not “driving” that by operating a motor vehicle with a gear shift with a “D” on it that he’d “contracted” with the State to agree that he was “driving”?

I feel like you could have a lot of fun with this:

“Did you file a sworn affidavit with the Secretary of State that you objected to this contractual definition within 30 days of purchasing this automobile?”

“Did you write ‘without recourse’ on your gearshift and dashboard within 30 days of your purchase of the vehicle and have the same notarized?”

Help with Portal Distance [bedrock]

How far away from each other do overworld portals need to be so that they create their own Nether portal?

Often when I’m out exploring, I’ll come across a ruined portal and restore it only to discover that I’ve emerged in the Nether in an existing portal. Convenient for getting back to my base but useless for returning to the spot I just came from, since returning through that portal will take me to its original linked overworld location.

How far do I need to ensure a portal (either renovated or newly built) is from another to ensure this doesn’t happen?

Edit: I’m using Bedrock 26.21 on iOS
