Train Critically Injured a Grab Rider near Makkasan Airport Link

Tuesday 19 May 2026. 10:50 AM.

A serious accident occurred when a train struck a male delivery rider along the Makkasan railway line, leaving him critically injured. Officers provided first aid before urgently transporting him to the hospital.

At 10:50 a.m. on May 19, Pol. Lt. Col. Wenid Tosakul, Deputy Traffic Investigation Superintendent of Makkasan Police Station, was on duty when he received a report that a train had struck a pedestrian, causing severe injuries. The incident took place beside the Makkasan railway tracks in front of Mercure Hotel, near BTS Makkasan on Kamphaeng Phet 7 Road, Makkasan Subdistrict, Ratchathewi District, Bangkok. He rushed to the scene together with Pol. Col. Uramphon Khundechsamrit, superintendent of the police station, emergency responders from Phramongkutklao Hospital, and volunteers from Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

At the scene beside the railway tracks, authorities found a man believed to be around 50–55 years old working as a delivery rider. He was lying face down and barely breathing, wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. He had injuries to his head and face. Officers administered first aid before rushing him to Phramongkutklao Hospital.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the injured man had parked his motorcycle near the railway tracks and crossed over to urinate. As he was crossing back to the other side, he entered a blind spot where the train operator could not see him. He was also reportedly wearing headphones in both ears at the time. The train arrived just then and struck him, causing critical injuries.

However, authorities stated that they will conduct a more detailed investigation before proceeding with further legal action.

Myanmar quakes shake Bangkok (18 May 2026)

Bangkok and at least three provinces were shaken by two moderate earthquakes centered near the southern coast of Myanmar on Monday morning, the Earthquake Observation Division reported.

The division said the first quake, 5.3 on the Richter scale, was detected at 9.05am Thailand time. Its epicentre was 10 kilometres underground near the southern coast of Myanmar, 247km southwest of Thailand's Mae Sot district in Tak province.

The second, 3.2-magnitude tremor was 10km deep, also near the southern coast of Myanmar, at 9.18am Thailand time.

People in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Lampang and Nonthaburi sent about 40 reports to the division saying they felt the quakes and suffered nausea for short periods. Most of them were in buildings in Bangkok.

The Department of Mineral Resources attributed the quakes to the movement of the Sagaing fault in the Andaman Sea.

Several high-rise buildings in Bangkok were evacuated.

The department said there were no early reports of damage caused by the quake.

Poor city planning may creates an impossible traffic dilemma resulting in the railroad clash?

If the bus has to wait to completely clear the railroad, it would be stuck there forever.

At least 8 dead in Bangkok bus-train collision

Eight people have been confirmed dead following a collision between a train and a passenger bus near the Makkasan station of the Airport Rail Link in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, with several others injured.

Police investigators at the Makkasan station were alerted via the 199 emergency hotline at 3.42pm about a fire involving a blue air-conditioned passenger bus (Route No 206) near the Airport Rail Link station on Asok-Din Daeng Road in Huai Khwang district. Firefighters and rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Initial reports indicated that a freight train had collided with a bus and a motorcycle, triggering a fire.

Flames engulfed the bus within minutes. Explosions were heard intermittently as firefighters battled the flames and eventually brought them under control. Rescue workers later discovered the bodies of eight passengers inside the bus.

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened when the bus drove over the train tracks and the train was unable to stop in time, with the collision igniting a massive fire.

As the bus was dragged along, it struck nearby cars and motorcycles, resulting in fires engulfing most of the vehicles.

Witnesses said that before the incident, they noticed the rail crossing barrier appeared to be malfunctioning.

Video posted online of the moment of impact appears to show the barrier stuck in place.

Several other road users in cars and motorcycles were injured in the incident. Officials were providing first aid and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. About 25 people were reported injured initially.

The Ministry of Transport, the State Railway of Thailand and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), which operated the bus, are monitoring the situation.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat and BMTA director Kittikan Chomduang Jaruworapolkul are at the scene to oversee the response and monitor developments.

Officials said updates would be provided as more information becomes available.

Origin of the word "Nana" (Sukhumvit 3)

Its name is derived from the surname of Lek Nana, a former Thai-Indian Gujarati politician and real estate entrepreneur, who was dubbed as "Bangkok landlord", because he owned much of the land in this area and was the first entrepreneur to invest here since the 1970s. He owned vast tracts of land along Sukhumvit Road, including the area that now bears his name.

The family's original Indian surname was Thepadia of Sunni Bohra Muslim community. During an audience with King Rama IV or Rama V, the patriarch scolded his misbehaving children in Gujarati using the word "nana", which means "little children". Charmed by the sound of the word and finding it easier for Thais to pronounce than their original name, the King suggested they adopt it as their surname. The family eventually acquiesced and officially adopted "Nana" as their surname.

In that era, only Nana Nuea was bustling and full of shops and restaurants. While on the opposite side, Nana Tai was only residential area.

You may have heard BTS passengers laughed when the train announces "next station nana." This is because the word Nana has some meaning in many languages.

  • THAI: Nana (นานา) comes from Pali-Sanskrit. It means "many", "so and so", "various", "mix and match".
  • GUJARATI: Nana (નાનાં) means little ones.
  • JAPANESE: Nana (七, なな) means the number seven. Although the station is E3 not E7.
  • CHINESE: Nana can means many different things. One (哪哪) means "where?". As in "next station where?".
  • ENGLISH: Nana usually refers to a "grandmother".
  • FRENCH: Nana can mean "girl", "girlfriend", "chick" or "prostitute".

Very heavy rain predicted across Thailand from Thursday to Monday (May 14 - May 18, 2026)

There will be heavy to very heavy rain in Thailand from Thursday to Monday next week, according to the Meteorological Department.

Sugunyanee Yavinchan, director-general of the department, said on Wednesday that the North, the Central Plains, the East and the South would see heavy to very heavy rain. Flash floods and run-off can occur, especially on slopes, in waterways and in low-lying areas during the period.

She attributed the forecast to an active low-pressure system moving to the upper Bay of Bengal, while the southwest monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

From Thursday to Monday, waves in the Andaman Sea will reach two to three metres and exceed three metres in thundershowers. Ms Sugunyanee advised small boats be kept ashore during the period.

Just FYI: A rain radar is the best way to predict whether your part of the town will be rained on or not. Thai Meteorological Department has a few radar loops.

This book is why Thais born on Monday do not have 'e', 'i', or 'u' in their first names

Thais typically name their child following a naming convention bible "Mahathaksapayakorn" (Ma-ha Thak-sa-pa-ya-korn). It was unclear who wrote the book but it was believed to be translated from Bali-Sanskrit and Mon in the early Rattanakosin era (1800s)

  • Maha = big, large, grand
  • Thaksa = ability, capability, also the name of a Hindu god Dhaksa
  • Payakorn = fortune telling

One of the most distinguishable rule about the naming convention is that a baby born on Monday should not have a Thai vowel symbol in their names. No ู ิ, เ, ะ and so on.

The only exemptions that are allowed are ไม้หันอากาศ (abbreviated "aa" sound (ะ) with a final) and ไม้ทัณฑฆาต (silent mark). Some Thai consonants also function as a vowel (กร = korn). And that putting two consonants together yield a hidden vowel (พล = phon).

As a corollary of these rules, names of children born on Monday when romanized will not have 'e', 'i', or 'u' in their names. That is if their parents followed this book.

Example of Thai male names with out vowels

พลพล (พะ-ละ-พน) = Palaphol (Pa-La-Phon) = someone with power of an army

Example of Thai female names

กนกวรรณ (กะ-หนก-วัน) = Kanokwan (Ka-Nok-Wan) = someone with golden skin

Example rule breaking

Lisa (full name ลลิษา มโนบาล, born ปราณปรียา Pranpriya Manobal) has ิ in Thai and "I" in her romanized name. We could assume she was NOT born on Monday, which was correct as her birthday March 27, 1997 is Thursday.

Fishy business. Tests confirm tilapia in mackerel cans

https://preview.redd.it/bkwl7moh440h1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=dde0be726838a3a4b18c27549bd195865fee5613

The Fisheries Department has confirmed that canned fish products labelled as mackerel in Samut Sakhon were found to contain pla nil (tilapia), not mackerel as stated on the packaging.

Earlier suspicions that the fish might be blackchin tilapia were ruled out, Thitiporn Laoprasert, director-general of the department, said on Wednesday.

She said the department would submit its findings to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to support legal action against the manufacturer.

The FDA launched a full investigation after a Facebook video went viral showing a consumer questioning whether the canned fish he purchased — labelled as mackerel — actually contained mackerel.

FDA officials worked with the Fisheries Department to verify the species and reiterated that selling one type of fish while labelling it as another constitutes consumer fraud.

The department said tilapia and blackchin tilapia belong to the same family but are distinct species. Media reports said the manufacturer admitted the product contained tilapia.

Blackchin tilapia is an African species that was originally imported to Thailand for research purposes but later found its way into local waterways, causing considerable damage to the ecosystem.

In a related development, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi and FDA secretary-general Supattra Boonserm led authorities to inspect the factory on Wednesday.

Ms Supamas, who oversees the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, said consumer protection is a government priority. She inspected the production process to obtain first-hand information.

Ms Supamas said the agency would continue examining the case.

>A businessman has accused a well-known fortune teller of sexual assault during a healing ritual, allegedly presented as a way to cure illness and resolve karma, with a complaint set to be filed with police today, May 7.

>The man, identified only as 32 year old Ae, went to the Bangkok office of Sai Mai Tong Rod, a social media page that assists people with legal and social issues, yesterday, May 6, to seek help from founder Ekkaphop Luengprasert.

>The fortune teller is described as a well-known spiritual teacher with celebrity followers who allegedly claimed to communicate with heaven and hell.

>Ae said he had suffered from severe cluster headaches and had sought treatment from several doctors without success. His mother, who followed the fortune teller online, suggested visiting him after believing he might be able to help through ritual treatment.

>On May 2, Ae and his family visited the fortune teller’s home in northern Thailand. He said the site was large and resembled a spiritual practice centre, with many people waiting.

>He met the fortune teller at around 6pm but was allegedly told he had heavy karma and needed to return as the final case of the day, described as a VIP session, at nearly 10pm.

>Inside the ritual room, Ae was allegedly told to chant before being asked to remove parts of his clothing. The fortune teller allegedly described the process as a Hindu-Shiva-Lingam style treatment.

>Ae alleged that the first assault involved inappropriate touching and sexual acts under the claim that it was part of the treatment. He said he followed the instructions because he believed it might be a real ritual and feared what could happen if he tried to leave.

>The second alleged assault involved further sexual acts, with the fortune teller allegedly performing oral sex on him while using explicit language and roleplay. Ae said he asked to use his phone under the pretence of looking at images and secretly recorded evidence.

>After that, the fortune teller allegedly called Ae’s mother into the room and wrote down about seven names said to be linked to his karma, telling the family to make merit at temples. The mother was then asked to leave again.

>Ae said a third assault began when the fortune teller claimed another karma ritual was needed and began touching him. The fortune teller stopped when Ae’s mother came back into the room, then let him leave.

>After the incident, Ae said his headaches did not improve, and his mental health worsened. He later told his girlfriend, mother, and family what had happened.

>He later found online claims suggesting other people may have reported similar experiences. He decided to seek help because he had evidence and wanted the case pursued.

>Ekkaphop said a previous person had contacted him with similar claims, but there had not been enough evidence at the time, reported Khaosod.

>He added that he would take Ae to file a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division today rather than local police, because the fortune teller was believed to have local influence.

4 May 2026. A brawl broke out on Pattaya beach after a foreign tourist allegedly assaulted a Thai man who had warned him about smoking cannabis in a public area, police said.

Kittipong Sa-ardchandee, 29, the victim, said he had been relaxing and eating with relatives by the beachfront when a group of foreign tourists at a nearby table began smoking cannabis, the smell drifting to other visitors.

He said he approached them politely to ask that they not smoke in a public space. Despite the tourist’s Thai girlfriend attempting to intervene, the man reportedly became angered.

Kittipong said that as he turned to walk back to his table, the foreign tourist adopted a fighting stance and attacked him from behind, triggering a scuffle. The assailant allegedly claimed to be a “boxer”.

The victim added that earlier, another group of Thai diners had also warned the same tourist and were similarly assaulted. Municipal officers quickly intervened to stop the incident, but the foreign tourist continued to provoke the group, pacing near the scene and making obscene gestures. Authorities eventually ordered him to return to his accommodation and instructed both parties to disperse to prevent further escalation.
