A Thai woman has been arrested in Taiwan after allegedly swallowing 72 heroin-filled capsules to smuggle the drug into the island, according to Radio Taiwan International (RTI).

The woman, identified only as Ms. A, was arrested at Kaohsiung International Airport on 6 April after investigators received information that a foreign national was suspected of smuggling drugs into Taiwan by concealing them in luggage or inside her body, RTI reported.

Authorities said the woman had swallowed 72 oval-shaped capsules containing a total of 289.1 grams of heroin, with an estimated street value of about NT$3.6 million.

The capsules were tightly wrapped in plastic. Investigators said the method posed a serious risk to her life because if the outer wrapping were damaged by stomach acid, the heroin could leak into her body.

She was taken to hospital, where authorities administered medication to help her pass the capsules naturally. It took 10 days for all 72 capsules to be recovered, according to RTI.

The woman, who works as a Muay Thai instructor, was placed under close 24-hour supervision during the process because of her physical strength, authorities said.

She has since been handed over for prosecution under Taiwan’s drug control laws. The Kaohsiung Prosecutors Office has filed the case with the court, which ordered her detention while legal proceedings continue.

Why it so often rains during Bangkok's evening rush-hour

Ever wonder why rain always seems to hit Bangkok just when you are about to go home after work? The Meteorological Department has an explanation.

Department official Wuttipong Nubanjong on Monday said clouds that produce rain gather strength from moisture and sunlight over the Andaman Sea in the morning. They grow bigger as the southwesterly winds in the rainy season blow them to the mainland.

Rain normally starts in western provinces including Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi early in the afternoon. When they move further inland they accumulate more moisture along the path, the official explained.

By the time the rainclouds reach Bangkok, it is late afternoon in the capital, he said, adding accumulated moisture sometimes turned into downpours.

P.S. The rainy season and the southwest monsoon will last until mid October.

Japanese tourist injured by 6 teenagers in a robbery after getting off a wrong exit at Makkasan Airport Rail Link station

https://preview.redd.it/1dxnutetc8jh1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddc1bf2522a90769b250a608e948529f6191b9e5

A 43-year-old Japanese tourist was injured by a group of suspected robbers near Makkasan station on the Bangkok Airport Rail Link on Wednesday night, police said.

Pol Col Urumpon Khundetsamrit, chief of Makkasan police station, said on Thursday that the attack took place at about 8.30pm at a public park behind the electric train station, which connects Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan province with central Bangkok. The location is linked to Soi Asok-Din Daeng 30, which runs through a deserted area.

Police identified the injured tourist only as Yuki, 43. The man was looking for a staircase leading to Makkasan station but mistakenly entered Soi Asok-Din Daeng 30. As he was leaving the alley, six young men on two motorcycles approached him from the entrance and shouted, “Money… money.”

When Yuki told them he had no money, the men surrounded him, struck him three times on the back of the head with a stone and punched him once in the mouth. He then fled to the entrance of the alley, where he encountered a ride-hailing driver who helped him. The tourist lost his credit card in the incident, Pol Col Urumpon said.

Thai doctors ran a randomized controlled trial determine whether consuming Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) before a surgical on-call shift increases operative workload, as is widely believed among Thai healthcare workers

Background: Thai doctors fear eating KFC before their shift, as they believe doing so would increase their workload.

The Influence of Food Superstition (Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC) on the On-Duty Surgeon’s Workload: A Multiple-Armed Randomized Controlled Trial. Annals of Surgery Open7(3), e694. https://doi.org/10.1097/AS9.0000000000000694

Objective:

To determine whether consuming Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) before a surgical on-call shift increases operative workload, as is widely believed among Thai healthcare workers.

Design:

Three-arm randomized controlled trial.

Setting:

General surgery department, Phatthalung Hospital, July 2023–June 2024.

Participants:

Five general surgeons contributing 345 duty shifts; 313 shifts formed the primary analysis (Control 107, KFC 101, Five Star 105) after excluding 32 resident-present shifts.

Interventions:

Shifts were randomly allocated (permuted blocks, allocation concealment) to Control (no intervention), KFC, or Five Star brand fried chicken.

Main outcome measures:

Primary outcomes: total workload (cases per shift), number of operations, and number of consultations. Secondary outcomes: estimated blood loss and operative time. Exploratory outcome: surgeon belief score change before and after trial completion.

Results:

No primary outcome differed significantly between arms. Median total workload was 14 (IQR 11–17), 16 (IQR 12–19), and 14 (IQR 11–17) cases per shift for Control, KFC, and Five Star arms, respectively (P = 0.22). Operations (P = 0.71), estimated blood loss (P = 0.86), and operative time (P = 0.55) were similarly nonsignificant. A borderline overall difference in consultations (P = 0.046) was not attributable to either active arm versus Control on post hoc testing. Linear mixed-effects modeling confirmed no arm effect on any outcome after adjusting for surgeon, duty type, and resident presence. Belief scores declined significantly after trial completion (P = 0.037).

Conclusions:

KFC consumption does not increase surgical on-call workload. The significant decline in surgeon belief scores suggests that structured self-experimentation may effectively challenge culturally embedded superstitions in clinical practice.

Looking for a Switch 2 controllers (Aolion, NYXI, 8bitdo) in Thailand

I am from Thailand. I am looking to buy a Switch 2 controller between these three choices:

  • Aolion Rococo. (Cost around 15 USD here)
  • NYXI Wireless Pro Controller (Cost around 15 USD here)
  • 8bitdo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth (Cost around 25 USD here)

I will be playing mostly cosy games: Pokopia, Fantasy Life i, and Story of Season.

I already have an 8bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless but I cannot make it work with the Switch 2 even after the firmware update on both the dongle and the controller. I am quite content with the layout and the comfort of 8bitdo Ultimate 2C.

Which of these three choices should I go for? Happy to hear an alternative suggestion but I would prefer that it is not more than 30 USD.

Jayasāro (birthname Shaun Michael Chiverton) was born on the Isle of Wight in England. At the age of seventeen, having been in contact with Buddhism through reading, he left for India, where he spent "a couple of years" travelling and learning before hitchhiking back to England. At the time he was still looking for a way of life in line with his personal principles. In Asia he heard about an Englishman who had been a monk in the Thai Forest Tradition and was leading meditation retreats. Upon hearing his stories of life as a forest monk, he realised it was the way of life he was looking for.

After joining Ajahn Sumedho's community as an anagārika in 1978 he travelled to Thailand to ordain at Wat Nong Pah Pong in 1979. He received full ordination by Ajahn Chah in 1980 and was abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat from 1997 to 2002. He currently lives alone in a one-monk monastery in Thailand.

In 2017, Jayasāro published a biography of Ajahn Chah entitled Stillness Flowing.

In 2019, Jayasāro was honoured with a royal title from Thailand's King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X). On 9 March 2020, Jayasāro was granted Thai citizenship by royal decree.

On 14 July 2026, Jayasāro was elevated to elevated to Somdet Phra Maha Phacharayanamuni. His full Buddhist title is สมเด็จพระมหาพัชรญาณมุนี ศรีวิปัสสนาภาวนาโภศล โสภณธรรมานุสิฐ วิจิตรธรรมปฏิภาณ ไพศาลวิเทศกิจธาดา สุสีลาจารวัตรสุนทร มหาคณิสสร บวรสังฆาราม คามวาสี อรัญวาสี.

"His Holiness the Great Sage of Diamond Wisdom, an eminent master of Vipassanā meditation, distinguished for profound knowledge and eloquence in the Dhamma, a leading promoter of Buddhism internationally, exemplary in moral conduct and monastic discipline, and a great leader of both the urban and forest monastic traditions."

Ecclesiastical peerage of Thai Buddhism

Somdet phra rachakhana (Thai: สมเด็จพระราชาคณะ) is the second highest rank in the Thai sangha after the supreme patriarch. At present, somdet phra rachakhana are appointed by the monarch of Thailand and there can only be eight somdet phra rachakhana: four from the Mahā Nikāya sect and the other four from the Dhammayuttika Nikāya sect.

Where can I find a proper physical therapist?

Most of the physical therapist I found on Bangkok Google Maps or hospitals seems to be more about using some devices to get the faster customer turnaround. I was prescribed ultrasound electrotherapy for my shoulder neck pain and muscle knot, but I read that the ultrasound technique is not backed up by clinical evidences. Most of the pain relief is due to temporary placebo effect.

Do you know a physical therapy that you could recommend? One that is less about using devices but about proper stretches and exercises?

Thai or English is fine.

I was prescribed ultrasound electrotherapy. I heard it is a sham, what are proven alternatives?

I have a shoulder neck pain. There is a big knot on my left shoulder that occasionally press on my nerve. I saw a rehab doctor who prescribed ultrasound electrotherapy. I have read here and elsewhere and found that ultrasound electrotherapy is mostly beneficial due to the placebo effect.

What are proven alternatives that I should try to pursue? I would like to have the names to consult with the doctor next time.

Sadly, in my country, physical therapy is about using this and that devices.

Hia, Monitor Lizards and a Thai Swear Word

เหี้ย (Hia)

Hia is a extremely versatile Thai word. It can be use as a noun, a verb, an adjective or an adverb. Or simply an interjection.

Literally, it means monitor lizards.

But colloquially it can mean many things.

Thai Literal Translation Meaning
ญาญ่าสวยเหี้ย Yaya is beautiful as hia. Yaya is extremely beautiful.
ข้อสอบยากเหี้ย The exam was difficult as hia. The exam was fucking difficult.
ไอ้เหี้ย! You Hia! Among close friend, this may serve as a rough but affectionate greeting. To a stranger, this is a very rude way of addressing someone.
เหี้ยอะไรเนี่ย What hia is this? What the hell is this?
เหี้ย! Hia! Fuck! As in an interjection.

The word Hia originally means an Asian monitor lizard. The word is of an unknown etymology. It sounds similar in Lao, Tai Don, Tày, and Nùng. So it is possibly an inherited Proto-Tai word, or at least a very old word that predates the separation of Tai languages.

Monitor lizard eggs used to be a delicacy, favored by nobles and royalty. There is an old Thai proverb "เกลียดตัวกินไข่ เกลียดปลาไหลกินน้ำแกง" which means "Hate the monitor lizard, yet eat its eggs; hate the eel, yet drink its soup." King Rama I was known to love eating monitor lizard eggs so much that his chef made a snack to look and taste like monitor lizard eggs. It is called " "Khanom Khai Hia"/ "ขนมไข่เหี้ย"or sometimes called "Khanom Khai Hong" / "ขนมไข่หงส์" (Phoenix eggs or swan eggs) to make it sounds more upscale.

Traditionally, the monitor lizard was regarded as an ominous animal. If one entered a house, it was believed to foretell disaster.

This belief appears in Akkharaphithan Sapp, a Thai dictionary compiled by the American missionary Dan Beach Bradley in 1873. Under the phrase “hia khuen ruean” (เหี้ยขึ้นเรือน, “a monitor lizard enters the house”), Bradley explains:

>“When a monitor lizard climbs into a house, people believe it signifies the destruction of that household's property.”

The old text Abhiphothaiyubāt likewise classifies a monitor lizard entering a house as an ill omen, alongside vultures, snakes, water monitors, owls, herons, foxes, rainbows, bees, turtles, and other wild animals. The meaning depended on the direction from which the animal entered:

  • East: loss of wealth and children.
  • Southeast: the house will catch fire.
  • South: death or life-threatening illness.
  • Southwest: robbery.
  • West: good fortune; a man would find a wife, and a woman a desirable husband.
  • Northwest: prosperity and happiness.
  • North: financial gain.
  • Northeast: favor and honor from nobility.

The same text also prescribes a remedy: if a monitor lizard enters the house, offerings of liquor, rice, incense, and candles should be made to avert misfortune and invite prosperity.

Evidence shows that Hia was already being used as an insult by at least the reigns of King Mongkut (Rama IV) and King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). An article in Wachirayan Wiset (Vol. 7, Issues 9, published during the reign of Rama V) describes several meanings:

  • As a verb: to wear an awkward, embarrassed expression when unable to respond or defend oneself.
  • As an insult: someone who causes a household financial ruin.
  • As a term for an evil or wicked person: “Ai Hia” (ไอ้เหี้ย) compared a villain to the ill-omened animal.
  • As a general curse: applied to anything whose presence brought destruction or bad luck into a home.

Nowadays, there are many alternative forms of the word Hia. They are attempts to be more indirect and thus less rude.

Thai Transcription Note
เห้ Hey Different vowel
เชี่ย Chia Different starting consonant.
เหรี้ย hRia Add trilling R
ตั่วเฮีย Tua Hia Make it sounds like older brother (大兄) in Teochew Chinese. But sounds very similar to "ตัวเหี้ย" / monitor lizard.

ทัวร์ลง / "Tour bus has arrived" - a Thai phrase for social ostracization

"ทัวร์ลง" literally means "the tour bus or tour group has arrived." This phrase acquired a colloquial meaning "to be socially cancelled" / "to face public outrage".

Example of how to use the phrase.

  • "โพสต์นี้ทัวร์ลงหนักมาก": "This social media post has a lot of tour groups visiting." It means this post is facing heavy public backlash.
  • “ระวังนะ เดี๋ยวทัวร์ลง”: Careful, the tour bus might come. This means 'be careful of what you say or post so that you don't get cancelled.'

Another related phrase are "ทัวร์กลับลำไม่ทัน" which literally means "the tour bus could not u-turn fast enough." It is used when a new piece of information was revealed resulting in the ostracization being cancelled itself.

This phrase got popular around 10 years ago but it may been in use for much longer.

Bodhi Tree or Sacred Fig fell down in Happy Land

Last night storm caused a bodhi tree to fell down in Happy Land.

https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1483688883785373

Fun fact: Ficus religiosa has been listed as an "environmental weed" or "naturalized weed" by the Global Compendium of Weeds. It has been assigned an invasiveness high risk score of 7 in a risk assessment prepared for the species' invasiveness in Hawaii by PIER. Such a high score predicts it will become a major pest in suitable climate zones. The major reasons for its invasive behavior are its fast-growing nature, tolerance to various climate zones and soil types, reported lifespan of over 3,000 years, and its suffocating growth habit as it often begins life as an epiphyte
