OPNSense Firewall Backup stand in

Friends,

Right now, I am running 100% with OPNSense integrated with Proxmox hypervisor.

There have been times that I needed to re-do my Proxmox hypervisor and have had 100% downtime. The people in my house "Mrs." and my two sons "that miss their cartoons" complain..;-)

So I started wondering can I install OPNSense in Oracle VirtualBox and use this as a temp firewall/router while I am resolving what ever issue with Proxmox hypervisor could be experiencing?

I have had success prior installing OPNSense in VirtualBox but never making it as my main router for standby.

To understand my network
- Cable modem is connected to my LAN in on my MS01 Minis Forum box. LAN out goes into my network panel to my Ubiquity Network. From there OPNSense provides the IP address via DHCP inconjunction with the Network switch.

My laptop is connected through the patch panel direct via ethernet. Only thing that I can think of is that the laptop would need to mirror the MS01 Minisforum for the ethernet ports and one port would not suffice?

Ideas, Suggestions?

ProxMox USB / NVME Mounting Question

Friends,

I went through the process of reviewing kb articles, AI, other posts, and videos about how to re-mount a USB drive in case of a disaster hits. What really helped is installing Proxmox inside VirtualBox for my testing. Once I have everything down to science was able successfully restore.

Applied the same procedures to my production Proxmox environment w/o error.
That way in the future if problems arise there won't be that panic.

It wasn't too long that I re-did my ProxMox hypervisor because I did not like the naming conventions I gave my NVME drives. I decided to blow everything a way and start fresh. Even had the vms/lxc backed up to USB but failed as I was not able to mount. Now, that I have this down shouldn't be a problem in the future and less downtime. I even wrote instructions, have video, explanation of the steps so there is no circus play.

So question I have this also would apply to the NVME drive and mounting or is this treated different from USB?

In my ProxMox environment I have three NVME drives - Drive 1: ProxMox OS, Drive 2: Virtual/LXC Machines, Drive 3: Backups from Drive 2.

So what is the best practice to mount the Drive 3 NVME. Does it follow the same logic as USB drives?

Please advise

RAV4 Dome Light Fix

Friends,

This is how I fixed my Dome Light Assembly for my Nissan Rogue 2018.

My guide is pretty straight forward and can be applied to other vehicles with the same

issue.

Steps

https://imgur.com/a/aLz4iZe\](https://imgur.com/a/aLz4iZe

I noticed people suggesting the following which will not work long term

- Super Glue, Crazy Glue, Gorilla Glue

- Duct Tape

Glue is a great idea BUT what if you need to replace the electrical wire or harness? Now you are in

a bind having to pull the plastic assembly off risking further problems.

Duct Tape is a great idea too but different climates, especially in higher temp states the tape will wear quickly and you are back to square one with the assembly hanging down.

Sure you can take this to the dealer and have them charge you part/labor which will equate to around $500.00 plus. Could also look at a local car junk yard looking for the same make and model vehicle purchasing the part. But in the end you will probably pay $$$ for the replacement part and waste time locating the part.

For a simple $2.00 fix all you need is a few cable ties, drill, and about thirty minutes of your time.

I have posted the image with the steps provided that it is straight forward not difficult. Use to your degression of what cable ties you choose. For my Nissan Rogue, I used thin 11" inch cable ties and then attached them then thread them through the metal and holes that I drilled.

In all took me roughly thirty minutes as I made a few mistakes with the cable ties. After successfully installing the ties no more issue's with the assembly falling down during driving or stationary.

Very glad to help the community!

Question? - MTU and MSS

Friends,

Couple of weeks ago I started to notice that surfing Amazon or Facebook there would be times the page would not load or Amazon would report that something went wrong on our side.

I disconnected from my SSID and used my mobile phone data and no issue's with both platforms accessing content. My laptop is direct connection to my network switch and didn't see any issue's there accessing FB/Amazon. The behavior seemed to be more with Facebook when using my phone and home wireless SSID.

As I investigated this further there were reports about Facebook market place, pages not loading etc.. So thought this could be the issue but didn't make sense when I switched to my cell provider no issue's.

This is my hardware

OPNSense Firewall running in Proxmox hypervisor. Firewall is up to date with all patches
Ubiquity Access Point and Network Switch USW Flex 2.5G and U7 Pro XG
Hypervisor is MS01 Minis forum 64gb mem.
S26Ultra Samsung

So I did the basic trouble-shooting - Rebooted everything and same behavior with my S26ultra. My wife has the S22Ultra and of course she decided to remove Facebook.

So I looked up threads, AI, and there was discussion about MTU and MSS. I changed the WAN MSS to 1500. The other part I disabled is Unbound DNS Set Block List and disabled the reporting for this. Rebooted everything and we are back in business.

Now, after a day went by I decided to remove 1500 and did not active set block list, reboot everything is still working w/o error.

So I am wondering for the WAN/LAN do I really need to set both of these to 1500 or just leave them alone?Would their be any advantages?

I am running Wireguard and connect from my external devices w/o issue's. Streaming, downloading, connecting is flawless.

Other question why the issue with Facebook? I am thinking something on their side. But again did notice various products that I was viewing would error.

Ideas?

Start Failure [17] No Mapping Assistance

Aero OLED BSF (Gigabyte) laptop

32gb ram, two nvme drives

Official Windows 11

Rufus, Balena Etcher, and MSUSB Media Tool

Friends,

Seeing the following error when I'm trying to install Windows 11. Fold mini threads of advice and still keep returning back to the same error.

I've had no problems with installing Ubuntu or any Linux distro. But when it comes to Windows this is giving me a workout.

I preferred a factory reset on the BIOS learning the default values.

As I was reading secure boot was a possibility to disable. However in the BIOS there is no location to be able to disable secure boot in the security settings.

I am a IT engineer and I've worked with hardware for over 40 years and software. I believe with the last major upgrade to Windows 11 something changed internal to my system.

Is anyone encountered this and if so what was your steps to resolve this?

Please advise

Question: Weekly Updates for Home Labbers

Proxmox Friends,

Every week Friday evening I will perform the updates to my Proxmox hypervisor. This does make me nervous. I have everything backed up for my VMS and LXC's. Though I have not been backing up Proxmox HV OS. My backups are stored in three locations - SynologyNAS, Backblaze, and Proxmox SSD nvme data drive.

So the question is do I need to be performing these updates every Friday evening?

I have no issue's of rebuilding my server if I run into issue's. But I just need the backup configuration settings for easy restores. Am I looking at Proxmox backup server?

Please advise and Thank You for your advice folks

Stacking Power Adapters

Homelab friends

Cleaning up my cable management last week.

Decides to stack my three power adapters Synology NAS, MS01 Minusforum, and Unify Network Switch.

As I researched this and consulted AI it stated The concern would be heat entrapment and not proper air flow. I can understand that perfectly so my question is is what is the best way to clean this up?

Could I create a self for each power adapters with vents underneath or a stand alone mount for three adapters?

Advice please

Grafana XLC - Local Storage Only

Question ProxMox Friends

I am looking at installing Grafana and during the install it asks me what storagepool you want to install to.

The installer is only seeing local, istorage, and SynologyNAS. I would like to install the LXC container to VirtualMachines where all my VMs/LXC live,

I used at and it came up with the following:

Grafana likely only shows local Windows data because your storage pool metrics are not being collected by the metrics agent (e.g., Windows Exporter) or are not being scraped by your database (e.g., Prometheus). Ensure the exporter is running, configured to expose disk metrics, and that your database is correctly receiving data from that source.

Any ideas?
