new babey 💜
picked this lovely system off marketplace for a little over a hundred bucks over the weekend! it's a Power Macintosh 6500/250. i know it deserves better than the floor but i live in a little house already slam full of random computers so space is limited. fully working, running 8.6 off its 4 gig hard drive. this Performa Plus display is my first CRT monitor and it looks lovely!
this was clearly a well-loved home or maybe teachers' computer as there's a ton of programs, including a few early-education ones. i want to image this drive but i'll need something to interface IDE to SATA. in the meantime, i think some surfing of macintosh garden is in order!
X61t questions!
hi everyone!
a few weeks ago i got this lovely X61 tablet for a steal of a price off marketplace. it's been lovely, and i've been hoping to replace the (completely flat, original from 2007) 8-cell battery, so that i can actually use it on the go. problem is, i can't seem to find much in the way of replacement units. google searches yield maybe one or two listings for *other* original-from-yesteryear lenovo units (at a bit of a premium) or parts for unrelated thinkpads. looking up the FRU number on the actual unit seems to yield similar results. so uhh, my questions are as follows:
a regular X61 battery isn't compatible because of the different hinge, right?
where can i find *any* new battery for this thing? even some dodgy chinese brandless deal would do it for me.
there are also a couple other odds and ends i'd like to source (the missing pen and hard drive bay cover) but i know these tablet units are somewhat rare, does that extend to the parts? or am i just shite at googling? AAARGH
anyway, here's a picture of the unit. as tax. i guess. thank you all for any help!!
First Thinkpad :3
long time lurker and window shopper, first time poster and owner!
i paid 40 bucks for this x61t yesterday! it's in overall pretty good shape save for a few minor gripes (missing pen/HDD cover and a screwy latch) as well as a dead batt. screen and keyboard are in IMMACULATE shape for a used laptop from 2007. installed vista on it as it seemed to have OOB drivers for the touchscreen (i have a wacom pen that works!) and after a day of fiddling with it i see why everyone loves these old ones.
i think i might use this as a drawing tablet, if i can get something lightweight with krita going on it. cheers!!
cooked
pretty sure this is the end of the line for this HP envy laptop. intermittently shuts off and restarts a few times a day with no warning, occasionally makes super loud bitvomit-y garbage noise, and did this after running a memtest. the results came back okay weirdly enough, so i ruled out dying ram.

i think this is the cpu/igpu giving up the ghost. 😬
rate my setup
paid a grand total of 10 dollars for this beast.
the mini displayport refuses to output to any of my monitors for some reason so i have to hook it up to my laptop via capture card. the temp sensor cable for the hdd is missing so the fans are constantly pegged jet-engine loud
p.s. sorry about the windows keyboard :(
wondered why my $40 marketplace macbook wouldn't boot
someone past-tensed one of the soldered ssds with a dremel or something. since it's a t2 mac all the hardware controllers were in there 🫠
(p.s. seller claimed "battery issue")
Untestable E-Waste 2159 - screen damage concern
picked up this 13" late 2019 yesterday for $40 as-is, seller claimed "battery issue." got it home, opened it up to pull the battery... only to find the thunderbolt ports were removed as well! i have a new batt and ports on order, but i guess i'm too impatient to find out... what are the odds this screen is totally f'd with damage like this? i've never owned a macbook before 😭
(p.s. i am a little concerned about the fact someone went inside to scavenge the ports- but that's a post for another day when it inevitably doesn't boot 😅)
iMac G3 slotloader not posting
hey all!! a while back i got a late '99 G3 slotloader (dv? i'm not sure 😅) that the seller said only needed some RAM. i stuck a 64mb pc133 stick in, hit the power button, heard the drive spin up (and click a few times!) and CRT energize, but... no chime. or beep, like i've heard is supposed to signal a RAM issue... hrmm. sometimes when i power it on i hear what i think is the optical drive trying to actuate but other than that there's never any further sign of life.
i tried all the entry-level stuff i could find, key combinations, PRAM reset, PRAM battery replacement... no dice. the 3.3V light is on, and I've made sure the DIMM slots were clean and seating the RAM properly. i figured i'd just check to see if anyone else has encountered this before i go poking around inside or trying to recap it or anything super involved like that. thanks in advance for any advice!
