How many leaves needed for pawpaw to survive winter?

I made the mistake of only planting these mid-summer. I know pawpaws are weird little guys who use the cotyledon to grow a taproot first and then regrow leaves from scratch, but I’m worried there won’t be enough time for them to grow enough leaves to absorb energy into their roots before winter. Is there anything I should do? Articles online said to keep seedlings in the shade, which I had done since day one, but I’m tempted to put them in brighter light so they can grow more… good/bad idea? Canada plant hardiness zone 5.

Thanks!

Best way to remove garden soil particles from pool?

We had a major rainstorm over the weekend and the water was collecting high enough on the ground that it washed some garden soil and debris into the pool (this is a problem that should have been solved before the pool was installed at ground level when neighbouring yards are raised compared to ours, but I wasn’t around then).

The chemicals are in check (a company comes to monitor chemicals but not vacuum). The handheld cordless pool vacuum we have clogs up and malfunctions within a minute or so because the particles are small and block the filter. It’s really slow to clean out out each time and go again. If I use the big hose vacuum that plugs into the skimmer, will I wreck the pool filter? What’s the best way to remove all this fine-particle soil? I don’t want to have to drain the pool…

Thank you!

Steps to take to pump out water?

(New to pool ownership; still learning everything)

We’ve had a lot of rain and the pool water line is now higher than the skimmer opening. More rain in forecast so I can’t rely on evaporation. I assume this situation requires draining a couple of inches of water?

I’m trying to find instructions for how to drain some water without damaging the filter/pump/etc, but can’t tell for sure which instructions apply to our setup. I’ve found different instructions depending on filter type. Our filter is neither sand nor cartridge nor DE but some exotic combo or new category (STA- RITE System 3 Modular Media Filter). The pump is STA-RITE IntelliPro VSF. The pipes are noodly and confusing, but there is a pipe behind the filter with a valve that says “to the road” which I assume drains water to the street.

My question is, will the following steps work to drain a bit of water safely, or will they mess up the pump automation settings or whatever (I didn’t open the pool; a company did)? I don’t know what settings the pump should be at, or whether I’ll need to re-prime the pump when I turn it back on (heck, I don’t even know what priming the pump means, exactly).

  1. Turn off pump at breaker

  2. Close valve towards heater?

  3. Open valve towards road

  4. Turn pump back on at breaker

  5. (water drains?)

  6. Turn off pump at breaker

  7. Close road valve

  8. Open heater valve

  9. Turn pump back on at breaker

Will this be ok? Should I turn off the pump using the start/stop button on the control pad instead of using the breaker? Are there other steps I need to add so that no machinery breaks and no air gets into any pipes?

Thank you!

[TotK] Anatomical place name Easter eggs?

I know the devs put a lot of Easter eggs into character names (named after cooking oils, fruit, etc) and there are also locations named after characters from other games (Mido, Saria, Linebeck etc).

After seeing Knuckel and Ankel islands, I started noticing more place names that seem to refer to parts of the body - Nephra Hill (nephr- meaning related to kidneys), and Cephla Lake (cephalo- meaning related to the brain). There’s also a Broca Island near Cephla Lake (Broca’s region being a part of the brain). Am I on to something, or reaching?

Are there more anatomical place names I’m just not clocking?

How to cover French drain opening after removing downspout?

We moved into a house whose downspouts are connected to the French drains. The town has informed us this is against code. I know how to add a downspout extender so the roof water drains further away from the foundation, but do I need to put a lid on the French drain openings? If so, what does it look like? Solid, or with holes for water to enter?

Any advice on whether the third photo is something I can attempt to dig up myself or really need to call a professional for would be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks!

Is this baby pholiota lucifera?

Growing under a rock in my garden (Quebec, Canada). They’re about an inch tall. They’ve dried out and don’t look likely to get much bigger. iNaturalist‘s top suggestion is pholiota lucifera, but they seem to usually be much bigger. Would be cool though

Is this stovetop regular/non-induction?

Hi all, newbie questions, but:

Stoves are either induction or not, right? there’s no way they have two modes?

If I turn it on and it heats up without a pot on it, then it’s conduction, right?

I’m assuming the two HI settings on a single knob are just small/big, rather than conduction/induction…. But I’m confused as to why the heat is sometimes constant, and sometimes sort of pulses (visible red, then disappears, then visible again).

Cookware that is designed for induction stoves will work fine on regular ones, right?

Thank you!

Requesting help with data (follow-up post)

Hi all, back with 3 nights’ data at settings recommended by commenters on my previous post (including ramp turned off). Still got woken up by high pressure but not as frequently as previously, so that’s great.

Do the graphs look good? Should I keep these settings? I’m looking forward to not feeling like a groggy mess but don’t know how long it takes at optimized settings to feel ‘normal’ again.
My nose still itches so much I wake up and have to lift the mask to scratch it. It’s on the outside of the nose, so probably not nose hairs that need trimming..?

I tried creating an account on SleepHQ to share this data, but every password I chose ‘has been in a data breach’ so I gave up.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I’m less than one month into using CPAP/APAP and still learning to read the data. Previous nights have been trending towards lower AHIs and I certainly feel a bit better than before starting treatment.

Last night things were fine until I suddenly woke up because the pressure was too high and my mask was leaking (making top-tier fart noises).

I took the mask off and was going to try adjusting it but fell asleep first, which is why there’s only 2 hours of data (and why the AHI says 0). Definitely felt like a wreck this morning.

Anyway, what causes the pressure to spike like that? Just a ’breathing event’? Do I need to tighten my mask more? Feels slightly too tight already. Lower max pressure? Raise it?

AirSense 10 Autoset, AirFit F20 mask.

Thank you!

(edit: I ask because my main problem is frequent night wakings due to RERAs, which unfortunately this machine doesn’t record. I’m waking less since using it but still at least 2-3 times a night)
