Edmund Burk's "Reflections on the Revolution in France" is surprisingly relevant for today's Left. Here are some of my fav quotes:

"The great masses therefore which excite envy, and tempt rapacity, must be put out of the possibility of danger. Then they form a natural rampart about the lesser properties in all their gradations. The same quantity of property, which is by the natural course of things divided among many, has not the same operation. Its defensive power is weakened as it is diffused. In this diffusion each man’s portion is less than what, in the eagerness of his desires, he may flatter himself to obtain by dissipating the accumulations of others. The plunder of the few would indeed give but a share inconceivably small in the distribution to the many. But the many are not capable of making this calculation; and those who lead them to rapine never intend this distribution." - Edmund Burk, "Reflections on the Revolution in France" Part I (1790)

"The science of constructing a commonwealth, or renovating it, or reforming it, is, like every other experimental science, not to be taught a priori. Nor is it a short experience that can instruct us in that practical science; because the real effects of moral causes are not always immediate; but that which in the first instance is prejudicial may be excellent in its remoter operation; and its excellence may arise even from the ill effects it produces in the beginning. The reverse also happens; and very plausible schemes, with very pleasing commencements, have often shameful and lamentable conclusions. In states there are often some obscure and almost latent causes, things which appear at first view of little moment, on which a very great part of their prosperity or adversity may most essentially depend. The science of government being therefore so practical in itself, and intended for such practical purposes, a matter which requires experience, and even more experience than any person can gain in his whole life, however sagacious and observing he may be, it is with infinite caution that any man ought to venture upon pulling down an edifice which has answered in any tolerable degree for ages the common purposes of society, or on building it up again without having models and patterns of approved utility before his eyes." - Edmund Burk, "Reflections on the Revolution in France" Part I (1790)

"It is this inability to wrestle with difficulty which has obliged the arbitrary assembly of France to commence their schemes of reform with abolition and total destruction. But is it in destroying and pulling down that skill is displayed? Your mob can do this as well at least as your assemblies. The shallowest understanding, the rudest hand, is more than equal to that task. Rage and phrenzy will pull down more in half an hour, than prudence, deliberation, and foresight can build up in an hundred years. The errors and defects of old establishments are visible and palpable. It calls for little ability to point them out; and where absolute power is given, it requires but a word wholly to abolish the vice and the establishment together." - Edmund Burk, "Reflections on the Revolution in France" Part II (1790)

"When the revenue disappears in their hands, they have the presumption, in some of their late proceedings, to value themselves on the relief given to the people. They did not relieve the people. If they entertained such intentions, why did they order the obnoxious taxes to be paid? The people relieved themselves in spite of the Assembly." - Edmund Burk, "Reflections on the Revolution in France" Part II (1790)

Question for "Legend 1" Players... Are YOU still enjoying the grind?

Every bracket I join in Legends has a handful of players who have achieved "Legend 1" status. In fact, as time goes by, it feels like there are more of them every time.

Over the last several months, we've heard a lot of players like me stuck in mid-to-low Legends or below expressing our pain with not being able to progress. It's expanded all the way down in to Platinum now.

I'm curious though... for those of you camping out at the top of the game with the best access to resources and end-game content - are you still enjoying the game despite the fact that you've already summited? Is there enough to chase in the Keys Tree, the high end labs world, the super-developed Bots and Modules universes to keep you satisfied with getting similar results in tournament-after-tournament?

I'm not asking to be ornery; I'm legitimately curious what the game is like for you all...?

STAGFLATION - when costs rise but income doesn't...

One of the fundamental aspects of games like The Tower is that they are built around exponential growth of power, resources, currencies, multipliers, and progression. You start weak, unlock upgrades that multiply output by tiny amounts at first, then more and more. As you advance, each new level grows in power - it takes roughly as long to get from 10x damage to 100x damage as it take to get from 1000x damage to 10000x damage.

To counter this, the game builds in a similar exponential growth to cost to those upgrades - visible in the costs of developing any in game feature with in game currency. It starts cheap, and every subsequent step gets more and more expensive.

Ideally, the game is designed so that access to growth and the expense of that growth are closely linked. Sure, you can save up to buy something that's very expensive for your current income is low or you can put off investing in some feature until you're earning makes the cost trivial, but for the most part, the cost of upgrades should closely match your ability to pay for them.

In economics there's a term called Stagflation. It's when inflation (costs) are rising but economic growth (income) is stagnant. Stagflation is generally considered to be the worst possible economic condition - worse even than recessionary or inflationary periods where only one of these metrics is bad.

In games like this, costs going up is baked into the code. The next upgrade is going to cost more than the last upgrade. But in this game - thanks to poor game design that locks two essential currencies (stones and keys) behind PvP progression - income growth is anything but assured. In fact, due to the log-jam at the the top of tourney brackets, income growth is very, very unlikely.

This situation has persisted for about a year now and it's only gotten worse as players have slowly advanced their towers further up the cost ladder without being able to make the progress required to advance up the income ladder. Stagflation.

For players in the top of Champs and bottom half of Legends, gems and coins become less important resources as they eventually max the primary levers these currencies cover. Yet, their income for stones and keys is stagnant. There is nowhere to go, and every next level costs more at the same rate of earning, making progress slower and slower.

Stagflation is death for an economy. Properly understood, it's also the best description of the current state of this game.

Accomplishment: Dinged My Final Five-Star Module!

Project Funding was my last ancestral module (by a lot) and my last 5* module (by a lot). In fact, at the point it the second-to-last module became 5*, PF was still just 1-star. It took another month, but I finally got the last PF natural Epic and now I have a full set of 5* modules.

Time to start saving for new card slots!

The Absolute State of Tournaments - Over a Year of Champs/Legends Yo-Yos with nary a Key in sight...

I first broke into Legends on May 22, 2025. That was 391 days ago, well over a year. I know the exact date because I posted about it here.

At the moment, I'm holding the first place slot in my Champs bracket with just over 1850 waves. If I hold this position, it will be the third time in a row that I win this bracket outright to be promoted into Legends. Each time I get promoted I quickly get destroyed and sent back down. I got second to last place in my second to last Legends attempt with around 280 waves.

It's hard to track the progress I've made over the last year, but it's been substantial. I've got the game running 24/7 on my PC. Modules are almost all 5-star maxed. Working on key card masteries now. My tower econ and damage have grown by leaps and bounds - if I had these stats a year ago, I would almost certainly have done really well in Legends.

Trouble is, as my Tower has improved, the towers above me in the Legends bracket have also improved - and at a faster rate because they have access to more resources in general and a unique resource pool (keys) that I have not even come close to earning. My top performance after more than a year in Legends is 21st.

And my wave count has been pretty steady for that amount of time, too, thanks to Devs changes to tourney difficulty designed to keep tourney runs short. Every advance I make is met by an increase in difficulty that negates my performance in absolute terms, while the greater advance of those above me negates my performance in relative terms.

In the past year, I have gone from farming T7 for about 1T a run to farming T13 for about 5q per run. My PvE has grown strongly, thanks to Dissonance and other changes. By my PvP is stuck without any meaningful progress in over a year.

Making Legends harder won't help. My relative position will stay unchanged. The only solution in a zero-sum tourney structure is for the towers ahead of me to either quit or get moved into a new higher bracket. There is no possible way for me to close the ground between my tower on the towers above me earning more with more access to improvements.

This is a fundamentally broken system and it's broken for exactly the sort of players TechTree should care about most.
