New(ish) Vegan / Gluten-Free Cafe at Rockaway Beach

OLDSCHOOL is a 100% vegan and 100% gluten-free coffee shop just one block from the beach in the Rockaways. It opened back in May and seems to be doing really well with the locals.

There were just two pastries when I went: a cookie and a muffin, but they were excellent and made in-house. Incredibly moist, you’d never know they were gluten-free.

NOTE: The cafe doesn’t offer ANY disposable to-go cups, plates, or utensils. Just glassware. You either stay there to consume using their glasses and plates or you have to bring your own reusable cups / containers / etc. (The pastries could be carried with no problem, but there’s no way to take a drink to go.)

All the music is from a record player behind the counter.

The owner is a lifelong vegan who recently went gluten-free. She is planning to open a live music venue in the back and add more prepared foods.

Really cool spot - if you’re out at the beach, pop in! She plans to stay open after the summer season.

Address: 114-80 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway Park, NY 11694

Hours (from IG & Google): Mon-Thurs 7-2pm. Fri-Sun 7-7pm.

New: Redwhite Boneless Ramen (Vegan / Vegetarian / Plant-based)

Redwhite Boneless Ramen is now open at 201 Allen Street on the Lower East Side. The menu is 100% vegan / vegetarian / plant-based and any ramen can be made gluten-free. Their original location is in Boston and they have 2 in LA. They also serve vegan sushi and vegan / dairy-free mac & cheese. Really good, worth trying!

NOW OPEN: Redwhite Boneless Ramen

Redwhite Boneless Ramen opened today at 201 Allen Street on the Lower East Side (just south of Houston). The restaurant is 100% vegan and every ramen can also be made glutenfree. They have several impressive ramen flavors (I tried the Yuzu Sesame and the Japanese Curry flavors), and they also serve sushi and mac and cheese. Definitely worth checking out! Their official Grand Opening will be August 20th.

Ladybird Closing in December

Ladybird is closing at the end of the year.

If you aren’t aware, the owner Overthrow Hospitality (one of the top two vegan restaurant groups in the city), is in the process of majorly scaling back its presence here.

As their 10-year leases come up for renewal, the increase in their lease cost has made it unsustainable. They are focusing on opening vegan spots in other cities - starting with Soda Club in Denver next month.

New Vegan Menu at Brooklyn Cyclones

The Brooklyn Cyclones announced a new vegan menu at a booth in the stadium called the No-Bull Pen. There are 3 vegan options (and one vegetarian one - the one in the upper right of their image is not vegan).

July 9th: Vegan Market at Barclays Center

Thursday night is the Planted Culture Vegan Market at Atlantic Terminal (right across the street from Barclays Center). This is the market that was at Washington Square Park last year, founded by Madrina Vegana (amazing vegan tacos!) Lots of great vegan vendors will be there...highly recommended!

Ippudo V Adds Animal Products

IPPUDO V in DUMBO is now serving meat and other animal products. Some of the noodles aren’t even vegan now (and the menus don’t seem updated). Be very careful if eating here! The restaurant started as vegetarian, went fully vegan, and now is neither.

Someone else posted about 100% vegan ramen spot Redwhite Boneless Ramen (from Boston) opening soon in NYC. Perfect timing.

Gertie in Prospect Heights

Gertie in Prospect Heights has some amazing vegan options. Their Caesar Salad is vegan by default and they can also make it into a sandwich. You can also order a vegan tofu Reuben by replacing the meat with tofu and getting vegan aioli instead of Russian Dressing. Both sandwiches were excellent and I’ve heard the bagels are, too. There's also a huge backyard, which seemed like a great spot to relax on a weekday.

Subtext on the LES (Soft Open)

Subtext is the new night concept at Dialogue (the vegan coffee shop on the Lower East Side). At night, the cafe turns into a Chinese natural wine bar with plant-based bar snacks. They’re currently in soft-open with a limited menu, but later this summer they’ll add cocktails and full menu of small plates inspired by Asian street food. It's at 188 Allen St, open Thursday to Sunday ("6 PM until late").

"You Can Edit" Setting

I created a new group today using an old Reddit account, and then realized I wanted the "owner" to be a fresh account. So, I created a new one, added it as a Mod, and then removed the old one as a Mod. However, I noticed that the Mod permissions under "You Can Edit" it says "No." I haven't found anything the new, sole Mod can't do, but I'm a little worried I messed it up...what does "You can edit" / "No" mean, for a group with just one Mod?
