I started writing on Google docs, but switched to Scrivener halfway through the second novel of a trilogy. In Google I had every chapter (5 per book) as a separate document. At first I moved all 8 finished chapters to one project, and then separated them into different projects when I started on the third one. However, all my notes, character and location sheets, and especially the timeline are, of course, relevant for all three books, so I combined them again and now have one big project with 15 chapters all on the same level.

How do you you deal with such multi volume stories? All in one or separate projects each? How do you organise your writing in these cases?

Das ist vielleicht eine dumme Frage, aber wie handhabt ihr das mit der Namensnennung Eurer Charaktere?

Die Hauptcharaktere nennen ich (als Autor) alle beim Vornamen, denn sie sind Mitte zwanzig und duzen sich untereinander, werden sie von älteren Personen im Text angesprochen, werden sie gesiezt und mit Nachnamen angesprochen.

Nehmen wir an, ich habe den Vater Hans Müller-Lüdenscheid und seine Tochter Susanne. Ich schreibe über den Vater folgerndermaßen:

- Hans Müller-Lüdenscheid beschloss, das Wasser in die Badewanne einzulassen.

- Susannes Vater lehnte kategorisch ab, dass Gummienten zu Wasser gelassen werden.

- Später forderte er Herrn Doktor Klöber jedoch entgegen seiner ursprünglichen Weisung auf, doch die Ente ins gemeinsame Bad zu setzen.

Meine konkrete Frage ist: Außer diesen drei Versionen, was kann man noch sagen? Kann man "Herr Müller-Lüdenscheid" und "Hans Müller-Lüdenscheid" alternativ verwenden oder muss man sich festlegen. Als Autor wäre es in diesem Fall auch seltsam, wenn ich nur von "Hans" spräche, oder bilde ich mir da etwas ein?

Wie macht ihr das?

Ich bin in den letzten zwei Wochen mehrfach über das Thema Recherche gestolpert, sowohl im realen Leben, als auch bei Reddit. Ich hielt mich online ziemlich zurück bzw. äußerte mich gar nicht, aber ich hatte dort wie auch in Gesprächen mit anderen Autoren das Gefühl, dass das Thema Recherche eher stiefmütterlich behandelt wird.

Für mich ist es nicht nur ein absoluter Eckpfeiler, der die Geschichte real werden lässt, sondern macht mir auch großen Spaß. Ich war begeistert, als ich einen Münchner U-Bahnplan von 1980 finden konnte und somit meine Personen realistisch U-Bahn fahren lassen konnte. Für mein aktuelles Projekt recherchierte ich mit wachsender Begeisterung über die alternative Modeszene im London der späten 80er Jahre, nur um dann einen minimalen Bruchteil davon zu verwenden. Aber das Wissen drum herum hilft mir im Kopf meine Geschichte (halbwegs) glaubhaft in der Zeit und den Orten spielen zu lassen.

Wie ist das bei euch? Eher leidige Pflicht, toller Bestandteil des Schreibens oder weitestgehend ignoriert, ist ja schließlich alles Fiktion?

I wrote my first two novels (which belong together) without prior planning and outlining. I started writing and just followed my interest in the characters and 6 months came to a natural ending. As the story was quite long by then, I noticed I had another natural ending nearly exactly in the middle and that splitting it into two makes sense. However, there's a third part that I've started writing which would fully finalise the overall story. For this part, I actually started outlining (also helped by the software I'm using now, before I just used Google Docs). I set up the chapters and scenes and wrote summaries of what I want to write about, which open threads I want to conclude, which new topics I want to introduce etc.

What I noticed were two things:

• The process of writing feels a lot less organic to me. Instead of galloping over open countryside, I'm now cantering in pre-defined paths
• I always wrote chronologically, I might not have fully finished a chapter or scene, but now I wrote a couple of scenes that are in the middle of the story and it feels strange that they're not bedded into the context

So what do you prefer - outlining or just going with the flow and seeing where it leads you?
