How to travel from Mangalore Junction to Coorg

We are 7 people travelling to Coorg from Mangalore Junction. We’ll be reaching Mangalore around 8 AM, so can anyone suggest the best way to travel to Coorg? Should we book a taxi or take a bus?

Key questions:

  1. Do buses run frequently from Mangalore Junction railway station, or do we need to go to Mangalore Central to catch a bus? Also, is the bus ride comfortable, or is it usually crowded?

  2. How much would a one-way cab cost? Are online cab services like Ola or Uber available for this route?

I completed a budget trip from Mumbai to Kalpa and Chitkul in just ₹13,000, and honestly, it was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had.

Started with a train journey from Mumbai to Chandigarh. From there, I took an HRTC bus to Reckong Peo, followed by a short bus ride to Kalpa.

I stayed in Kalpa for 2 days at a homestay costing ₹1100 per day, including breakfast and dinner. One of the highlights was walking from Kalpa to Reckong Peo a simple but incredibly beautiful experience.

From Reckong Peo, I took a bus to Chitkul and stayed there for 2 days at ₹1500 per day (again including meals). The peaceful vibe of Chitkul is unmatched.

Later, I shared a taxi from Chitkul to Shimla for ₹1200. Stayed one night in a hostel for ₹600, then took a bus back to Chandigarh and finally returned to Mumbai.

💸 Expense Breakdown:

Train (Mumbai ↔ Chandigarh, non-AC sleeper): ₹2000

Bus (Chandigarh → Reckong Peo): ₹900

Bus (Reckong Peo → Kalpa): ₹40

Kalpa stay (2 days, incl. meals): ₹2200

Bus (Reckong Peo → Chitkul): ₹400–500

Chitkul stay (2 days, incl. meals): ₹3000

Taxi (Chitkul → Shimla): ₹1200

Shimla stay (1 night): ₹600

Bus (Shimla → Chandigarh): ₹400

Total: ~₹10,840 + 2160 miscellaneous = 13k

A low-budget trip, but high on experiences mountains, peace, and unforgettable views. Definitely worth it.
