My brother started T today.

Ive been in this reddit for a little while because my little brother is Trans. He's been through hell. I know this isn't exactly a life hack post but im the only person in our family that acknowledges his struggles and truly respects him being Trans. He finally starts his journey to become himself today after 24 years.

So its his T birthday. I want to surprise him for when he gets home from picking up his meds. Me and my husband were thinking a cake or something. Any suggestions? TIA ❤️

UPDATE: we got him a cake that said "Its a boy!" A birthday balloon, his favorite snacks, and favorite drink. Woke him up from a nap with all of it and he was so happy. He thought the cake was hilarious 😂

Odd situation here. Any advice appreciated.

Hi I am a big sister (26f) of a special needs adult sibling (lets call them F) that experienced severe educational neglect their whole life. I need advice or where to go next. Also, I apologize in advance for the length of this.

Starting in 2008 my father and stepmother decided we should be homeschooled. Me and my 2 younger siblings (F was 1 at the time). From 3rd grade until 8th everything was smooth sailing. When I was around 13-14 years old though- my step mother (who was the only parent schooling us) started neglecting our education. Severely. I was stuck in 9th grade for over 2 years because she was never home. My younger sibling who isnt special needs never made it past 8th grade. I ended up enrolling myself into Penn Foster at 18 after being stuck in the 10th grade for 2 more years.

She would take F to speech/ABA therapy once a week and would say "im going to start F in school on Monday." This went on from the time they were 4 until they were 11. Monday never came. They never started school. Maybe a worksheet here or there- which was met with anger (extreme) when F didn't understand or wouldn't do it right.

When F was 11 and I was 18 my father and stepmother split up. My father had custody of F. He put F in public school for one year and F went from knowing literally nothing other than ABCs, colors, shapes, and numbers to being able to read a little and write a little. When F was evaluated, Fs IQ was 48. Severe intellectual disability. Well F started getting bullied so he asked me to homeschool F. And I did because I hoped I could help. I homeschooled F from the time I was around 19 until around 21. In 2 years F learned how to write in print, some cursive, read chapter books, basic math, and alot of communication improvement. I didn't do everything right but I was consistent and I tried my best for someone whos own education was neglected. At 21 I had to stop because my father was becoming more and more verbally and mentally abusive towards me and I couldnt take it anymore. Its like he replaced my stepmother with me. I moved away. He enrolled F in an online school with a family friend as a tutor. He was also convinced NOTHING was wrong with F so he would pressure the tutor to get F through school faster cause it was costing him money. The tutor did so. F retained nothing. He paid for the diploma that F didn't achieve.

At 18, F moved into my stepmother house (last year). My stepmother ran off with a random truck driver- i wish I was joking- in January. My stepmother abandoned F and F moved in with me. Which I'm absolutely okay with because both of Fs parents were horrible to F and all of us. Well now after 6 months of trying to get F into a routine and all the extras, F and me talked about them doing school again. F has healed alot and isn't as scared to say "I dont know" anymore. I think F would benefit from a routine curriculum or something of the sort. I think in 5 years F could improve so much now that they are in an environment where they can grow and ask for help. I will always be here to help them through it now. My problem is- where do I even start? They are an adult now. They are on a 2nd-3rd grade level still after all these years. They haven't moved educationally from where we left off back in 2021. My heart breaks. All I know to do now is try to get them the help and education they deserve.

What would you do in this situation? Where would you start? Are there curriculums online they can take as an adult? I've been looking and I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall because of the circumstances.

TLDR: Where do I start to help my adult special needs sibling recover from their educational neglect.
