Flamingo Beach

Flamingo Beach, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

I have just spent a week here. I spent the run up to this holiday excited to go snorkling, I’ve actually been before around 12 years ago and went scuba diving then, so I remembered how clear the water was and the vast amounts of fish. I was not disappointed this time around. I will caveat that by saying the water inside the man made breakwater arms can become slightly green and cloudy in places, but once you exit into the open water it becomes crystal clear. Without exaggeration, there were thousands of fish to swim with, ranging from small shoaling fish to octopus, ornate wrasse, parrot fish, rays and even angel sharks (sadly I didn’t get to see one of these). Water temps are around 23 centigrade (73 Fahrenheit) in August, so it’s remarkably comfortable to swim in for prolonged periods of time. As it’s Lanzarote its quite windy which means the waves can pick up once you exit the breakwater, however I’d describe it as consistently choppy and wouldn’t cause any concern to even the most inexperienced of snorkelers (but I’d always recommend buddying up in unfamiliar waters).

On my previous visit whilst scuba diving I got to witness a massive shoal of barracuda. The dive leader decided that was enough for the day there and then.

The beach itself is man made as the island is volcanic so its coastline is rather unforgiving and rocky. It is located directly in front of a row of bars, shops and several large hotel complexes.

The beach itself was clean of any rubbish and got very busy with holiday makers and locals usually around the early afternoon.

Portnadler Bay

Located close to Hannafore, near to the town of Looe. This hidden gem is well worth a visit. Crystal clear waters, and usually very quiet as (just like my previous post regarding Lantic Bay), this is set back and ‘guarded’ by a bit of a hike. Although compared to Lantic this is a leisurely stroll. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy from Oystercatchers to Seals and the occasional fish (although I think the seals keep their numbers pretty low). It’s not a sand beach, but the shingle is quite fine and it’s generally well kept with very little rubbish left behind by visitors

What was the moment you realised you had to quit?

Honestly my wake up call moment was realising I couldn’t even go to the bathroom without taking my vape with me. If I was to get up to go for a pee I’d quite often double back to my chair to pick up my vape before quickly popping to the toilet. Ridiculous in hindsight

I then set myself a date I wanted to quit by, which was the first day back from a holiday abroad, and today officially marks 107 days since I quit vaping. I had vaped since around 2009/10 and prior to that smoked since around 1996. I’ve tried and failed to quit many times in the past, but the realisation how hopelessly dependent I was motivated me enough to push through the horrible quitting process (cold turkey, worked for me but absolutely no fun).

So I was wondering what was your wake up call moment which motivated / motivates you to give up…

Lantic Bay

One of my favourite beaches. It’s a fairly tough hike to reach the beach which ensures it doesn’t get too busy. The water is crystal clear and the views are spectacular. Is there a better beach in Cornwall?

It has officially been 18 days since I last vaped. I have been smoking and vaping for the last 30 years fairly consistently (with a few brief attempts at quitting over that time). Once vaping became a thing I immediately stopped using tobacco products so I’d guess I’ve been vaping for somewhere close to 15 years, more or less half of my smoking ‘career’.

I decided this is the year to really try. And much to my surprise and with only willpower to guide me I have managed to quit cold-turkey. 18 days for me is huge. I was always a heavy smoker but frankly that vape was in my mouth every chance I had.

Psychologically, I haven’t really suffered too bad. My mood hasn’t been ‘that’ stereotypically aggressive and agitated, and it’s been commented on how well I’ve dealt with the cravings.

And that’s why the next part sucks so bad.

Since quitting I have developed insomnia.

For the first week the night sweats were horrendous. I’ve always been a hot sleeper, but this was something else. Waking throughout the night multiple times as wet as if I’d just jumped out of the bathtub. This of course meant I wasn’t sleeping well to start with.

This then progressed to waking at a strangely consistent set of times. 00:30, 02:30 & 4am. Almost every night without fail. Then one day, when I woke just after midnight, I couldn’t get back to sleep. Then the night after, then again and again. I contacted my doctor when I realised I’d had around 6 hours sleep over 4 nights. He prescribed me a sedative called Zopiclone. I’m on a low 3.75mg dose which doesn’t prevent me from waking up at the usual times but does help me with getting back to sleep. Of course these came with their own warnings of addiction, so I’ve kept the dose low and want to minimise my exposure to them. I tried going without the tablets last night and used alcohol instead. Big mistake, I still woke up but now also felt awful from the alcohol. As it’s the weekend I will go without again tonight as I don’t have the concern of work, and have bought some magnesium glycinate tablets to take an hour before bedtime to see if they help.

I’ve never heard of withdrawal insomnia before and apparently it’s something many people suffer from. I’ve literally been considering vaping again as, even though I have almost no need/want to do so, it seems preferable to sleep deprivation torture. I also work an extremely physical job which alongside the physicality requires immense concentration to prevent harm to not only myself, but others.

Has anybody else suffered with this. How long did it take to get over it? Do you have any tips to make this easier?
