Thinking about becoming and EMT (as a premed)

Hey everyone
I am considering going to EMT school and getting my license. I am a pre med in ILLINOIS. I wanna get clinical hours and experience but i’m genuinely concerned. (i do know that EMT jobs depends on location) I am worried that what if i only get to do patient transports as an EMT, wouldn’t that be boring? cuz i need to enjoy my job too right
atp, i dont even know if it’s worth going the EMT track as an EMT and i genuinely need guidance

For EMTs/pre meds:
- do emts usually do patient transports?
- i read that private ambulance companies get less 911 calls whereas fire departments get more but being an EMT in a fire department has more requirements like fitness checks etc. Is this true?
- Will I get to experience 911 calls as an EMT?
- Can i directly go from EMT school to being an ER tech or no?
- Is EMT worth doing for clinical hours as a pre meds or there are better options?
- also, is doing EMT jobs difficult as a pre med (like less time for studying etc )
- also, how difficult is EMT school and exams

I would genuinely appreciate guidance and help

Thankyou!

should i change my major as a pre med?

Hi,
I’m transferring my university (I live in Illinois) and planning to change my major from biology to health studies. I am considering this cuz i feel that it might help improve my gpa.

I saw a tiktok saying that it’s better NOT to change your major during your four years of undergrad if you’re pre med (idk if its actually true or not). Does changing your major affect your application (considering the fact that i’ll be switching to an easier major as compared to biology)

I would really appreciate if someone could guide me!

advice on clinical hours

Hi everyone,
I’ve finished two years of pre-med and have 0 clinical hours so far (ik that’s not a good thing)
I’m currently transferring from a Canadian university to a US university, so i’m not enrolled in any university right now.
I am a U.S. permanent resident.
I live in ILLINOIS. I am planning to apply to universities for Spring 2027 intake and am thinking to not waste any time till then and start with clinical experience jobs but am not sure if I would get one. I am already lagging behind in terms of collecting clinical hours because I just have 2-2.5 years of my degree left.

I want to start getting clinical experience but I don’t have any previous experience or certifications at all.

For those who started from zero and who have knowledge about this-
->Should I volunteer first or look for a paid clinical job-will both of them give me the same clinical hours and benefits (benefits as in good review on my profile when applying for med schools)
->Can I get a clinical job without certifications?
->Can I even get hired if I’m not currently enrolled in a university?
->Am I starting too late with 0 clinical hours after 2 years of pre med?
-> Will I even be able to collect good amount of clinical hours and experience?

Another question is that research hours matter a lot too for med school applications so should I also do research along with clinical hours or go with one thing at a time considering that I already am 2 years behind?

Health science or biology as pre med?

Hi everyone,
I am a Biology major (pre-med) currently and planning to transfer to a university in Illinois.
Should I continue as a biology major or change my major to Health Sciences?
My goal is medical school and I want to improve my gpa too but also want to stay in a good major.

Will I get into UIC?

Hi! I’m planning to transfer to UIC for a B.S. in Biology. I’ve completed my first 2 years of undergrad at a Canadian university and currently have 51 earned credits with a 66.33% cumulative average. I have 2 failed courses (Cell Biology and Statistics), although I retook Statistics and passed it. I will be applying as a U.S. permanent resident (I am from Illinois)
Do you think I have a realistic chance of being accepted as a transfer student?

Realistic transfer options

Hi! I’m looking for advice on realistic transfer options.
I’m currently pursuing a B.S. in Biology and completed my first two years at a Canadian university. I will apply as a U.S. permanent resident.
I have 51 earned credits and a 66.33% cumulative average on the Canadian grading scale. I have two failed courses, Cell Biology and Statistics(Stats was later retaken and passed whereas I didn’t retake Cell Biology).
My long-term goal is medical school, so I’m looking for a reputable but affordable university where I can improve my GPA and complete my pre-med requirements. I’m mainly interested in Illinois/Chicago and nearby areas, but I’m open to other options.
What universities would I have a genuinely high chance of getting into with this profile?
Thanks!

Transfer student looking for advice on Illinois universities

Hi everyone,

I’m feeling pretty anxious about transferring and would really appreciate some honest advice.

I completed my first two years of undergraduate studies at a university in Canada and will now be transferring to the U.S. I’ll be applying as a U.S. permanent resident, not an international student.

I currently have 51 earned college credits with an overall average of around 66.33%. My long-term goal is to attend medical school, so I’m looking for a university where I can continue my undergraduate degree, improve my GPA, and complete my pre-med requirements.

I’m mainly looking for universities that are:
Well-respected in Illinois
Transfer-friendly
Realistic for my academic profile
Good for Biology/pre-med (or another major if that would be a better option)
Reasonably affordable

Some universities I’m already considering are:
Northern Illinois University
Northeastern Illinois University
Roosevelt University
DePaul University
Illinois State University

I’d really appreciate advice on:
Which Illinois universities do you think I have a realistic chance of getting into?
Are there any universities I should add to or remove from my list?
If my end goal is medical school, would it make sense to stay in Biology, or should I consider changing my major before transferring?
Thanks in advance! Any advice from transfer students or people familiar with Illinois universities would be greatly appreciated.
