The Radio 4 adaptation of ‘Libra’ was fantastic

Thoroughly enjoyed the recent two-parter adapted from Don DeLillo’s ‘Libra’.

For those who don’t know, it’s a reimagining of the JFK assassination - I read the book for the first time last year, but just thought I’d share in case anyone else was interested.

Royal Military Police (RMP) Reserves

Hi all,

Curious to know a bit more about what the RMP Reserves actually do - is it one of those roles that's more suited to the regular element or is there a good bit of stuff the reserves can be involved in?

I'm not a police officer, so wonder if it's more suited to serving civilian coppers, and also just wanted some insight into their Phase 2 training.

Cheers!

Picked up these lads in the UK today

All three for £5 today - should say that I have no idea if they’re any good, but excited to continue my ACW education!

A great find at a charity shop in the UK today

After finishing (and loving) Co. Aytch a few weeks ago I was delighted to find this today at a charity shop (second hand book shop) here in the UK.

Only £2 too!

Request: Adrian Mole - The Wilderness Years

Hi all,

I’ve been enjoying the first two Adrian Mole diaries on BBC Sounds, and now looking for the next installment.

It isn’t on Sounds and I can’t find anything on YouTube either - any help in tracking it down would be appreciated.

Thank you!

77th Brigade - Reserve questions

Hi all,

I’m currently waiting to start foundation - I’ve joined up with my local infantry reserve unit, who are great - but wondering if I should be using my experience to contribute a bit better to the army.

I’m a civil servant working in PR/Comms so was thinking about 77th Brigade - there’s a bit about it online, but the army website link to the unit doesn’t work.

Does anyone know what the application process is like? - what’s involved in the training, presume they do two weeks of trade training etc.? - how does the commitment work, as they’re a national unit they’re a few hours from me so it says only 19 days commitment each year.

Also, is the process of transferring between units before/after foundation straightforward, am I likely to piss my current unit off by doing it?

Cheers!

Reserve Soldier - Phase 1: Modular vs Consolidated & locations?

Hi All,

I recently passed the AC and attested at my unit - in the process of getting booked on for my Phase 1 Foundation training, interested to know if anyone has any views on choosing the modular (over alternate weekends) or consolidated (a single 9-day block) options?

Also, I've been given a few locations to think about - Altcar, Grantham, Strensall or Donnington? - any of these places better than others or anywhere specifically to avoid, or just best to choose the one closest.

Cheers!

The story of the HL Hunley is fascinating

I was listening to the Rest of History podcast about the sinking of the Lusitania today and they made reference to ‘a confederate submarine’ being the first to sink an enemy vessel in combat.

My knowledge of the Civil War isn’t too bad (for an Englishman) but going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole of the HL Hunley has been fascinating, if not slightly terrifying to see the photos of the interior.

Can anyone recommend any books/documentaries to learn more, please?

What was Dartmoor Prison like?

Just curious - I used to go and visit my grandparents who lived in a little village on Dartmoor, was always terrified going past the prison.

Read that it was recently closed to due to high levels of radon which seems crazy.

I’ve watched both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger in the past week - can’t beat a good 90s Harrison Ford film - and wondered where to begin with TC novels.

I’m a big reader but never really thought about reading any of Clancy’s stuff. I know about the video games from when I was younger, but not much else.

Cheers!
