What’s with the HSV posts recently ?

I mean.. it’s been around for long enough that you’d think it would be a non-subject, also it’s not life threatening, there are ways to lower transmission and outbreaks, over 50% of people have HSV1, so why do I notice many posts about it recently on Reddit ?

*Not trying to start a debate or a fight, genuinely curious :)

I’m done with resin printing

Hello ! This is just a reminder to be careful with resin printing, along with my own experience. I felt the need to write it as a kind of final goodbye to this technique and tool I’ve been using for a few years.

After being introduced to 3D printing in design school, as I was studying jewellery design, I got my own printer (Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra then 4 Ultra), all the various machines, wash and cure, air filter etc..

What I wish I had been taught is the safety precautions needed. Yes you can tell me that I could’ve googled and done my research etc… but really as I started working with it in a really well equipped workshop at Uni, I thought that what the technical team taught us was all there was to know.

In the prototyping workshop none of the machines had ventilation of any kind, most of the time the staff would handle uncured resin with bare hands.. At some point they installed an Elegoo printer in our classroom so we could print whenever and it was kind of just on the floor with a jar of acetone on the side..

Anyways, I got my first printer about 3 years ago, that’s when I learned online, that it was a good idea to wear gloves… then I found out about the fumes and got a filter.. and then by joining subs like this one I learned more and more and I just ended up realising that my setup was far from safe still.

So I had to make a decision. I’ve had lots of fun printing things, and designing things to print, but my practice is leaning more and more towards using less plastic and definitely trying to avoid toxic and chemical materials. I had lung issues in the past and that’s no fun, eczema and dermatitis are no fun either.

This week, after meeting up with a friend who developed chronic dermatitis from chemicals, I finally decided to sell all my equipment, and to move on from this technique. As a designer-maker I now will focus mainly on hand-fabricating. Since tonight I’m a few hundreds richer and got 2m2 of space to fill with new stuff !

This is maybe not that interesting to read for most, but I wanted to write it because I feel like in my case the risks and safety procedures were not obviously stated, 3D printing is seen as this cool thing that anyone can do anywhere they want, that can be dangerous and have serious consequences.

Thanks for the advice I’ve received here over the years. Stay safe, be careful and have fun !

ps: not a native English speak so sorry for any mistakes.
