What if instead of America fighting North Vietnam, they decided for a Tito approach?
They saw South Vietnam as an unpopular, corrupt and ineffective Regime whereas the North had popular mandate. They decided that a Communist Vietnam away from the Chinese and Soviet satellite and an ally to the west is preferable, since they saw what happened to Tito.
They actually considered this option in the original timeline, but they misinterpreted it and firmly believed in the Domino theory.
