US NRIs and Travelers: What do you actually use for UPI payments when you're in India?

I'm a US-based NRI and I'm curious how others handle everyday UPI payments when visiting India.

There are few options today — NRE/NRO accounts linked to UPI, international mobile numbers with supported banks, or wallets/services that you fund before spending.

For those who visit India regularly:

  1. What do you use today for UPI payments?
  2. Does it work reliably enough that you're happy with it?
  3. What's the biggest annoyance — setup/KYC, OTPs, keeping money in India, pre-funding, fees, P2P limitations, or something else?
  4. If you could simply scan any UPI QR or enter a UPI ID and pay using your US bank account/card, without pre-funding or maintaining an Indian bank balance, would that be meaningfully better than what you use today?

I'm exploring whether this is actually a problem worth solving, so negative feedback is just as useful. If your current setup works perfectly, I'd especially like to hear what you're using.

NRIs: Do you mentally convert every UPI payment to USD?

I've noticed something about myself whenever I'm in India. Every time I scan a UPI QR, I end up doing a rough conversion in my head to understand what I'm actually spending in USD.

Sometimes I also lose track of how much I've spent over the course of a trip because my UPI history is only in INR and spread across different apps.

I'm curious if anyone else has this experience.

  • Do you mentally convert INR to your home currency before paying?
  • Do you care how much you've spent in USD during an India trip?
  • Or do you just pay in INR and not think about it?

Trying to understand whether this is just my habit or if other NRIs feel the same.

Looking for NRIs to test a small UPI companion app

Hi everyone,

I'm an NRI in the US and I've built a small companion app for UPI payments in India. I'd love to get some honest feedback from fellow NRIs.

What it does:

  • Scan any UPI QR code
  • Show the amount in both INR and USD before you pay
  • Open your existing UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, etc.) to complete the payment
  • Keep all your India payments in one place with both INR and USD amounts

The app doesn't replace your existing UPI app—it just makes it easier to understand and track your spending in India.

If you're willing to try it during your next India trip (or if you regularly use UPI), I'd really appreciate your feedback.

A few questions I'm trying to answer:

  • Is seeing the USD equivalent actually useful?
  • Would you keep an app like this on your phone?
  • What's the most frustrating part of paying in India as an NRI today?

If anyone is interested in testing it, leave a comment or send me a DM. Thanks!
