Zero Mission - I DID IT!!!!!!!

I finished Zero Mission yesterday in the middle of the afternoon! What a great game!

Since I didn't want to do anything else, I decided to go for my first 100% completion in a Metroid game. It was really fun! I had around 74% completion when I first finished it, so I decided to check the rest of my notes, before going for online maps. I had only one upgrade left for each area by then (except Ridley's Lair, that I had 6 missile upgrades left, and Chozodia, that I had 1 power bomb and 2 energy upgrades left).

But MY STARS ABOVE, the Shinespark challenges in this game are insanely hard to pull off, and some even feel like speedrunning techs. I loved figuring out myself how to solve most of them, but I had to look up videos on how to do the Ballspark challenge in the middle of Brinstar, the one on southwestern Ridley's Lair, and THIS ONE.

This one specifically took me too long to pull off. But since I was playing on an emulator, I took advantage of it, trying to get it done in different speeds (first 50%, then 60%, then 70%, 80%, 90%...) until I could actually do it in normal speed.

In the end it's just a 8 hours 100% completion for a (really cool) picture of Samus in the end, but DAMN, it was satisfying to finally pull off.

Can we talk about Rouge in Memories And Beyond?

i'm genuinely obsessed with the way Rouge spins the rope around her feet while holding Metal

She's so fucking cool

Nine SONS 😭😭😭😭

I saw someone miswrite "Nine Sols" as "Nine Sons" in another subreddit and it was instant neuron activation. I had to come back instantly to summon the solposters.

Who has a meme like that or is willing to make one?

Metroid Fusion is a great game, BUT...

I feel like, most of the time, the game doesn't want me to explore outside a particular path. Whenever I try to backtrack, I end up meeting locked doors, destroyed doors, enemy corpses that you can't destroy (genuinely what the hell).

The point that got me the most is how after you get Screw Attack, you're locked into a path to the ending of the game (apparently only if you take the elevator back to the Main Deck instead going through side routes, but still).

Now, I get that:

  1. There's are always an in-game reason for you being put on a certain path
  2. You can backtrack freely after completing the game

But still, this ends up being way too much of a vibe-killer in a metroidvania, specially by modern standards. And I didn't want to go through the credits before I can go back to collecting energy tanks and ammo.

Other than that, great game! It ranks below Super to me overall, but I loved the thriller atmosphere and tension of being constantly chased around by the X. Also, Diffusion is *cool* as hell (sorry).

pull out your favorite lore videos!

every franchise has that one person that takes their time to understand and sum up the lore, at even the most cryptic details (like mossbag for hollow knight), and becomes the "reliable source on [franchise's] lore".

i'm looking for the Metroid equivalent of that person, but I'll invite everyone to comment here the reliable source person/video of your favorite franchises, so we can help each other out!

Super Metroid is timeless

these days I have decided to play the games that defined genre (so, I'll be playing Symphony of the Night soon as well) and I have just finished Super Metroid.

at first I expected to find a dated game with interesting ideas, but instead I found an actual masterpiece that got me hooked for the entire 11-hours runtime. now it's on my top 5 metroidvania games and top 3 pre-2000 games (along with Zelda Ocarina of Time and Sonic 3 & Knuckles).

now, i don't think the game is perfect. to name a few points:

  • jumping felt very awkward first (and was still a little problematic in the end)
  • some techniques are hell to execute (i'm looking straight into your eyes, Space fucking Jump)
  • boss fights mostly felt like "launch your entire arsenal at the boss and hope to have enough energy to tank the almost unavoidable damage".

still, it's exactly what i look for in a metroidvania game. fun power-ups, platforming challenges, interesting exploration, creative puzzles, inventive paths to open. every new discovery, even if it's yet another resource capacity upgrade, felt rewarding just for finding out what to do. not to mention the aesthetics!! the game still looks beautiful and soundtrack is great. definitely a game that deserves the legacy it created, and that i'll coming back to again.

my rating for the game: 8.5/10 (that .5 is because Samus is cool af)
- favorite powerup: grappling hook
- favorite boss: crocomire

(goes without saying, but i'm looking forward to seeing other people's opinions on it too!)

i've no-hitted butterfly gal!!

i was just recording some bosses of the game to show my friend what it is like, and omg i've finally beaten Lady Ethereal hitless. not my flashiest, coolest, most WOW gameplay, but i'm still proud of myself. she's my favorite boss!!

i still haven't learned how to triple-unbounded-counter the "sun" attack with divine jade tho 😭

120% completion achieved!!!!!!!!

112%, all bindings of the 5 pantheons, all bosses on ascended/radiant in hall of gods, and, more importantly, THE ETERNAL ORDEAL!!!!!

(also, delicate flower for elderbug, so +1%)

i first played this game back in late December, full of expectations. at first it was "???? what do i do next?" after beating False Knight and almost dropping the game because of that. thank heavens, THANK HEAVENS, i kept going.

hollow knight is high-cortisol and trauma-inducing at the same level it is beautiful, epic, awesome, and worth exploring every corner and going for every challenge.

thank you, team cherry, for creating a timeless masterpiece.

what are you favorite jades/builds?

so, i've only played through the game once, and i'm getting ready to play more times. i'd like some thoughts on how other people build and what jades they never let go of.

i used health/survival related jades a lot such as health thief, quick dose and medical jade, but i want to focus on honing skills and playing more agressively next time.

i already have divine hand in mind, because i see a lot of gameplays with unbounded counter chaining and that shit is rad af. i remember i also used hedgehog jade against eigong. are parry-focused builds (dh, hedgehog, reciprocation) a good idea?

Timespinner ending?

i've just finished my first run of Timespinner. what an amazing game! good story, music, art, combat, movement, everything. i found some abilities a little weird at first (specifically >!the dash only working on the ground!< or >!the "become a rocket and jump infinitely" skill!<), but i ended up enjoying these a lot too and the time-stop mechanic used to platforming is GENIUS. i'll work on getting more achievements later on.

now, apparently the game has a couple of endings... and i'm curious about something in particular.

>!first of all, you can choose to kill Emperor Nuvius in the present, and from that point you have two choice: claim the throne or go back to live in the past time. I've got both these endings.!<

>!then you have the "true ending" route (?), in which you collect all the Timespinner gears and make such a huge change in the past that you have to fight the Sandman to become the true ruler of time itself.!<

>!for that route, the game offers you two options of past changing: kill Nuvius when he was a prince or kill Vol Terrilis. i opted to try killing Nuvius first and then leave Vol Terrilis for later, but then... the 'true ending' route started. i'm curious now: how big a difference does it make whether i choose to kill Prince Nuvius or Vol Terrilis?!<

(i could look for it on youtube? yeah, but i want to remind my fellow metroidvania players that this gem exists)
