Back cover thoughts

I like the back cover and that it is customizable and removable but if it's only use is to replace sim and sd cards and the battery won't be removable/user replaceable, I'm honestly not too keen on it.

All I can think of is going back to the days when my phone would fall out of my pocket in school and I'd have to scramble to find the battery and back cover and pop everything back in place again, but there isn't even the advantage of having access to the battery with this.

I can just imagine the phone tumbling off my desk at work and the back cover flying off and me awkwardly having to crawl around looking for it to reassemble it. I'm hoping a case can help prevent that at least, but then I feel like a case might add some bulk which I wouldn't be too fond of.

Maybe I'm overthinking it and it won't be an issue? Maybe they have the back cover clip on in a way that prevents it from falling off?

Will #8 TEK zinc plated screws in metal studs and zinc E-Z anchors in drywall be enough to hold a floating shelf?

Hiya, I'm hanging floating shelves in my new apartment and am dealing with metal studs for my first time, wondering if 2 TEK screws on both ends of the shelf with drywall anchors in between will be enough to hold? The shelf is 190cm long and itself weighs about 10lbs, it'll only be to hold trinkets and some small plants, I'm not planning on it being any heavier than 40-50lbs total.

The anchors I currently have are rated for 50lbs each, and I've been told that some good 1 1/2 inch zinc plated TEK screws will be enough for the studs because I'm trying my best to avoid toggles as I really don't want to deal with 1/2 inch holes in my walls later... Or with having to borrow my friend's drill either to be frank, he's quite busy so it may be a long time until I can get these shelves up.

Will I be okay with this plan or should I bite the bullet and schedule with my friend to borrow the drill later?

edit: also yes I have full permission to drill into the walls from my landlord, I am renting a condo unit and he said "go crazy, you can even paint the walls if you want, just patch any holes before you move out or be willing to pay for the repairs."

Sock blends?

Hi all, I only got into spinning this year and so far I've done a targhee/bamboo/silk yarn intended for sock knitting and a bfl/romney/silk blend (wip) also intended for sock knitting... socks are a favourite knitting project of mine so while I'm getting started (and while I'm still only using drop spindles) I'm primarily spinning to make sock yarns.

Just wondering what blend preferences people have for sock yarns, if there are any that are widely loved or known to make lovely socks. So far I haven't spun SW or any nylon blends which are typically my preferred blends for sock yarns I buy because I like being able to toss them in the wash, but I avoid SW and nylon for all my other knitting projects as I much prefer more natural yarns, so I am quite curious on what spinning with SW is like and also how nylon affects the feel of spinning and if it's even worth it to try or to just start washing my socks like all my other knit clothes and stick to natural fibres!

TL:DR what are your favourite blends for handspun sock yarns, and are SW and nylon blends worth giving a go or should I stick to natural fibres?

What's filming in Gore Park?

Anyone know what's filming in Gore Park? I walk through it every day on my way to work and yesterday I noticed guys that were draping a parachute over the stop lights at Hughson and King, and then today there is a bus parked with USA flag stickers and an ad for the 2002 movie "The Mothman Prophecies".

Awful pics because I was caught off guard and just stared, but who is this lad in Edinburgh?

The Merlin app is saying it's a Common Raven or Carrion Crow, it seems to think it looks more like a Raven (shaggy neck) but that a Raven in Edinburgh in late May isn't very common(?) so it may more likely be a Carrion Crow.

My friend moved to Edinburgh last year and says she still hasn't seen a raven and I was just visiting so I'm not sure how rare they actually are there, which is why I took the pictures. We're both novice birders so we stopped in our tracks and stared for a minute or so and went "Is that a HUGE crow or an actual raven???" and then the bird flew off and disappeared behind some buildings before we could get a good look at its tail.

It was solitary cooling off in a tree panting and we didn't hear any raven or crow calls in the area.

Also by HUGE I mean probably 40+cm tall, it scared me at first because I thought a man was hiding in the bush near us lol

Nikon Prostaff P7 8x30 vs Svbony upgraded SV202 ED 8x32?

Hi all, looking to get my first pair of mid-size binos and I've seen great things said about both pairs but I was wondering if anyone has any experience trying both and which they think would be better for some casual birding?

I've held the P7s and like them, but I sadly can't get my hands on the Svbonys to try before I buy. The ED glass in the 202s is tempting to me... but I think the FOV on the P7s might be more important.

The P7s are on sale at a local store so I can get them for about $160 while the SV202s are about $150.

Also open to suggestions for compact lightweight mid-size binos for under $200 CAD!

edit: to add that for reference i went to a marsh to see American Woodcocks at dusk and i was using the only binos i have which are vintage military issue 7x50s that did the job but weighed half my body weight and are bigger than my head... so i got fed up and want some binos i can keep in my bag as an every day carry and whip out whenever i want!

I posted my first singles in a cake a couple weeks ago, so here's the finished product of the first skein! again this is a targhee, bamboo, silk blend!

does the twist look too intense? it's a 3-ply sock yarn so I went for a high twist to add some strength and resist pilling... but I can't tell if I overdid it? after soaking it and drying it the yarn doesn't try to twist on itself nor does it get curly bits but I am anxious because it's going to be a gift and I don't want my friend to end up with wack socks!

I knit up a swatch with the first gram I plied prior to this skein to measure meterage and it definitely has the high twist checkmark stitch where the left post is straight vertical and the right post has the usual lean, but I get that with a lot of commercial sock yarns as well. there is seemingly no bias in the swatch either but it's only a gram so it's probably 1.5" by 2".

Heya, today I found 2 carpet beetles on my couch, I live in Southern Ontario in Canada, and I've never seen any beetles or any larvae in my apartment before and now suddenly I found a black carpet beetle, and a varied carpet beetle both hanging out on my couch??

I had my window beside the couch open all day yesterday and have been keeping them open more frequently now that it's spring, maybe I should stop doing that? I have screens on my windows but the occasional small moth or mosquito gets in so clearly they're not great screens.

I am a knitter and I spin yarn so I have plenty of wool and cotton fibres in my apartment, I keep them in plastic bins but I'm not sure how good the seal on them is so I vacuumed sealed all my yarn in plastic bags and popped them in the freezer.

I vacuumed around the couch, and the entire couch, should I steam it? I have a handheld steamer I could use but I don't know if that's overkill after finding only 2 beetles.

I'm considering doing a lot of laundry, I must admit my partner and I are something of clothes hoarders so we do have a lot of clothing folded and stacked up in our closet which would be a lovely place for carpet beetles to infest.. Maybe this is the push we need to finally do our long promised "big clothes overhaul".

Anyway do you think it is worth it to go nuts and wash everything? Or is it more likely that somehow 2 beetles got in through my windows.....? I feel like that sounds fake tbh.
