3 weeks

Officially 3 weeks off nic after being a very heavy user for a decade. vape/zyn/cigs I was constantly switching. But i could feel it killing me. Chest pain, trouble breathing, random aches and pains… fatty liver on top of it all. Anyhow after many failed quit attempts I got on chantix and it’s working for the most part. I’m posting here honestly because I really want a fucking cigarette right now and am choosing to distract myself with something else instead. Fuck nicotine absolutely dog shit tier useless drug from hell. Thank you for reading my post fellow quitters I love you all 🫡

to Map or not to Map

I was thinking today about how important maps often are to games, especially to my favorite genre, survival horrors. mapping stuff out can be an essential part of the gameplay loop. also often a primary feature of RPGs. but then I thought about fromsoft games - games I consider to be sort of survival horror fantasy RPGs, in a loose sense - and noticed how none of their games except for Elden ring have maps. But even elden ring's is a large scale map, it is not assisting you much in dungeon exploration. I found one thread on here that talked about souls games specifically, and how having a map might ruin the mystery. But would that be true for a fog-of-war type map, like diablo? or maybe maps just ... aren't necessary when levels are small/interconnected enough? so why include them unless they offer something beneficial to the experience?

What do you think the pros and cons are of having a map? Why do so many games have them, but others nix them? Genuinely very curious to hear other's thoughts on this :) thanks!

How important is it for assets in a scene to share materials?

I'm currently setting up a natural 3D scene with some rocks, plants, etc. The individual plants are all the same and have one material, but I've made several rocks that all have their own individual materials, baked from a high poly version. How "acceptable" is this? How many individually textured rocks before it raises an eyebrow? My understanding is that best practice would be to have one or two individual rock materials with all rocks sharing that same material. Thanks in advance for any answers!

is baking textures just a deeply annoying process or am i missing something?

i'm currently messing around with making a lower poly version of a character using selected to active baking. and my god, having to constantly fiddle with the max ray distance, vertices being ever so slightly shifted to get better bake results, and having to wait 2 minutes every attempt to see if whatever thing you changed is even working - it's a nightmare. yet all of the tutorials i've found on this topic seem to go through the same struggle and say that it's normal?? there has got to be a better way than this, right? anyone have any suggstions, maybe an add-on that automates some of this? thank you!

did resizing in the compositor break in blender 5?

im in blender 5.1 trying to scale down a render in the compositor to get the 3d pixelated look. the transform node itself doesn't actually change the size of the image, just the render - it leaves a large transparent border. supposedly, plugging in an image that is the actual size you want into the top of a mix node will resize the results to that size. but it is not doing that. did this just stop working, or am i doing something wrong? (there's nothing in the viewer because i'm working on an NDA project, i just moved it out of the way)

i just had a run where i enchanted a decisions, decisions with imbued. on the last boss combat, i drew a royal gamble and started the combat with 30 stars. i won in the first turn with a stardust and a radiate 😳
