what "home improvements" were worth doing yourself vs worth paying for a professional?

just moved into my new house and am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of things that need some TLC. Did y'all experience so fixes that were maybe easier than you thought and wish you did yourself? On the flip side, has anyone taken on a project and wished they hired a pro?

When to harvest elephant garlic

Growing for my first time and these shoots are out of control. I’m talking five feet tall but I’m curious when I should harvest the bulbs? Do I wait for the flower to bloom (kinda want to see them) or do I snip the shoot so more energy gets put into the bulb? When do I dig it up? Do I need to hang the bulbs and how do I prep some cloves to replant? Thanks I have no idea what I’m doing.
