Side gigs while shadowing?

I’m on my journey to get licensed and am curious what side jobs people have taken (if the shadowing work didn’t bring in enough income).

Is there a common type of side work that training appraisers can look out for? Or is that not really a thing, and it just comes down to what random work you can find on the side to fit outside of a shadowing schedule?

I’m curious to hear people’s experiences while they were training. TIA!

What is your “white whale”?

General discussion, what would be (or was) your “white whale” of an appraisal? A once in a lifetime opportunity to appraise, or just a deal that was/would be a lot of fun to work

Trainee license before Certified General courses?

Hello all, I’m trying to condense down a list of steps to get a General Certification.

I see that you need 300 hours of coursework for General.

It sounds like it would make the most sense for me to start with just the first 83 hours for my Appraisal Trainee license first (plus 4 hour ATSA course), then get a trainer and complete the rest of the General coursework while in the training portion, right?

Or do you automatically get the Appraisal Trainee license after hitting the proper amount of hours while you’re working through the 300?

I’m scouring forums and resources online and wanted to make sure my conclusion was correct. Thanks!

For reference, I am in Texas.

Plug or unplug unused garage fridge?

I have a fridge that is in good condition that I’m keeping in my garage, since my new rental came with a fridge.

I was planning on keeping my old fridge unplugged and with the doors open. I live in Texas, so we get very hot summers and I don’t want to put unnecessary stress on the fridge by plugging it in while in the garage.

Someone told me I should plug it in anyway, that leaving it unplugged would be worse, as the refrigerant/oil would go bad and the fridge would get gross if it was left off in the heat.

It will probably be at least 2 years before I use it again, but I want to keep it. What should I do? I can’t find any evidence online to back up the claim that it would be bad to leave it unplugged.

Towing without ETC?

Hello all, I have a 5th gen SR5 Premium, RWD. I’ll be towing a small uhaul trailer for a 5 hour drive. It won’t be too heavy.

Most recommendations I see is to use ECT when towing. I don’t have ECT in mine unfortunately, is there anything else I should do like shifting into semi-auto? Or just send it and I’ll be alright?

Edit: ECT instead of “ETC”

Moving fridge in truck; lay down or stand up?

I’ll be transporting my fridge on a 5 hour drive using my pickup. I know it’s generally advised to not lay fridges down on their side unless absolutely necessary.

I could transport it standing up, but it’d basically be a sail on the back of my truck given that I’ll be driving 5 hours at highway speeds. I’d rather not take the big MPG hit if I don’t have to.

Should I transport it standing up, or laying on its side?

Note: I am aware that if transported on its side, it’d need to be left upright and unplugged for at least 24 hours to let the refrigerant settle back where it needs to be. Any additional advice is welcome!

Blue light seen ascending to helicopter?

Last night I had an odd sighting. I saw a hovering helicopter (I assume it was a heli, since it was hovering) and a blue lit object in the sky. The blue lit object then ascended in a perfectly straight line up to the heli and disappeared. The heli then took off.

It was at night so I couldn’t make out any details other than lights. I checked the Flight Radar app, and the aircraft wasn’t on the map.

I was thinking the blue object might be a drone of some sort, but I can’t come up with an explanation as to why it’d ascend up to a heli. Another thought would be something on a line hanging from the heli and ascending up it, but I can’t come up with what that’d be. What could this have been?

Context: This was in the DFW metroplex. The heli had a solid slight on one end and a flashing light on the other. The other object (blue light) was constantly lit with no other lights that I could see

F150 grille on raptor?

You read that right, has anyone ever converted a regular F150 grille onto a Raptor?

I love OEM+ looks, and think it’d be sick to have a raptor looking more like a beefy F150 (since it technically is), and to be more understated.

I know there’s countless F150 guys with Raptor-style grilles, but can’t find any examples of the contrary.

Good “apocalypse” platforms?

What’s everyone’s idea of a good DS model for a hypothetical apocalypse? Apocalypse or not, just something reliable and bare bones

I’m thinking something with kickstart kits available to cut out relying on batteries, something with good reliability and versatility, and something with readily available parts and that is easy to work on.

Interested to hear ideas!

Does anyone else see ferns this way?

Ever since seeing the “One Good Fern Deserves Another" episode of Garfield and Friends as a kid, I’ve always seen ferns in real life like the monster in the episode.

Does anyone else see them this way too?

What is this type of binding called?

Hello all, I’m looking for a notebook with this type of string binding. My goal is to be able to rearrange individual pages as needed by taking the string out and threading it back in.

I’ve found a few examples but can’t nail down the right term to search for. The closest I can get is “refillable”, but most with that term don’t have this kind of binding. TIA!

Hello all, I recently got a hitch mounted tire carrier to put my spare on when I need the bed space (tire is too big to fit under the truck). Any tips or hacks on getting it off and on easier?

The spare is about 110lbs, it was a huge pain to lift onto the carrier. I’m not a big guy and really not looking to get a hernia lol

I’ve seen some jeep guys use a motorcycle ramp, but I don’t have anywhere I can rest a ramp since the hitch mount is in the way.

TIA!
