What is it that I am not getting with WTC 600 Tokyo Express Way?

This week's weekly challenge: World Touring 600 Tokyo Express Way.

This race is just next level difficulty for me for some reason.
I realized that I need at least 550+HP with upgraded turbo to keep up on the straight line, but I have tried several cars(Nissan GTR, Ford GT, Supra, etc) with that much HP, they just can't turn: once I get to the curvy part of the road, I need to slow down significantly otherwise the car understeers straight into walls.

Before I waste another 100k+ credits trying out different upgrades, I want to check here to see if there is anything I am doing obviously wrong.

I read somewhere there is a wall riding strategy, but for some reason, as soon as I touch any wall, all the other cars just fly pass me. Also I have tried different tuning methods to try to get rid of understeering.

Edit: I figured out the techniques I was missing, inspired by some replies in this post. I won the race using exact the same car set up I had before. But here is what I was missing:

  1. Only wall-ride the first wall out of the long straight (and go full throttle at it, I was slowing down before hitting the wall which defeats the whole point), don't rely on wall ride for the rest.
  2. Turn in early to counter the understeer. What's special about this track is that apexes are often blocked by the walls, if I turn after I see the apex and that's already too late. Always try to hug the inside wall of those curves. Also then you end up on the dryer part of the road which makes the turns easier
  3. Don't give up if the first guy (the blue Honda guy) is way ahead of you at the start. That guy will make 2 pit stops so if I make 1, I will catch up onto him at his second pit stop (after lap 10)

Is it normal that I cannot drift at all on a driving wheel, while I can drift perfectly on a controller ?

I have tried all kinds of wheel settings, all kinds of car tune, but none of them works: the car constantly spins into the direction my head is pointing, instead of slide sideways, or, if I counter steer really fast and aggressive, it swings left and right like a pendulum. It has nothing to do with throttle control, it does the same thing regardless of how much throttle I apply.

On controller, it's almost like automatic, i just need to push the bumper to the opposite direction from where my head is spinning towards, it automatically enters a drift.

I have been practicing it for days, and at this point I don't feel like it's a skill issue, because I have never succeeded even once. If it's just inconsistent: then it's a skill issue. Now It feels like either something is wrong with my wheel, or I am missing something obvious.

And the reason I am so obsessed with drifting, is not that I need to 3-star all the drift challenges. Entering drift is literally my way of getting out of every spin situation when playing on controller. On wheel, one slightest spin and the race is over. Constant rewind or restart really kills the joy of playing on a wheel

Why do most grace set not impress me at all?

I may be understanding things wrong, but I am really not motivated to switch my regular set bonuses to graces, and thus has no motivation to farm any end game contents.

Regular sets can easily achieve 20+% increased martial art damages with like warriors of east + brave demon, and I can have other utility skills too like ki reduction, reduce enemy ki upon deflection with Minamoto set.

And there are overpowered crucible weapon special skills like martial art damage/melee damage +8%.

It seems pretty impossible (requires some insane drops) to have a good grace sets, while not giving up these existing perks. I have played the entirety of NG+ with stone of penance active, but I still cannot put together a grace set that can out-class my previous non-grace builds. Most of the graces look like jokes to me: eg. 10% damage on poisoned enemies at 6 set piece? When you could easily have 18% martial art damage at 3 piece, like why? A scaling on magic at 7 piece, when you could easily have B+ or A scaling with regular set 6 piece?

Can someone convince me to continue farming. Thanks
