Shakedown/Hike Advice for Zugspitze Day Hike

Hello everyone,

I’m a casual hiker, but I’m confident I’m fit enough for this hike.

I’m planning to solo-hike Zugspitze next week from Hausberg (no via ferrata). It’s about 15 miles one way to the summit, and I'll take the cable car or cog train on the way down. My plan is to start hiking at 0500 so I can summit before 1400 and comfortably take the cable car before it closes.

I’m a little concerned about solo hiking such a long distance, since if something happens ¾ of the way (when the elevation gain gets serious), I would have to hike about 24 miles back down. I’m here to take any advice from people who have done this hike before and to get a shakedown of my gear or recommendations on items to add.

Current Items:

1.     North Face Rain Jacket

2.     Fleece

3.     Map

4.     Headlamp

5.     Compass

6.     Leukotape on parchment paper

7.     Emergency Blanket

8.     Emergency LifeStraw water filter

9.     Adventure Medical FAK

10.  Osprey Talon 22

11.  Cascade Mountain Trekking Poles

12.  Camelbak 3L Bladder

Not shown, but I will bring 2 sandwiches, trail mix, some fruit, extra batteries for the headlamp, and a whistle. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Clogged group head with hard water [Breville Barista Express]

Hello,

I'm hoping for some help as I attempt to fix my espresso machine. I recently moved from the US to Germany. I continued using tap water as I normally do and quickly found out that the water here is extremely hard, which I believe caused a clog in my machine.

Basic info: 7-year-old machine. 110v.

Issue: Water won't come out of the group head. Water flows normally from the steam wand and hot water spout. The pump works normally as well.

Troubleshooting/Repairs: After some research, I suspected the 3-way solenoid valve was the problem and replaced it myself, but it didn't resolve the issue. I also ran the descaling process multiple times with descaler solution, which didn't work either. I even let the descaler sit in the tank/machine for a week to see if it would dissolve the clog, but it didn't work.

Additional issues: Since I now live in Germany, no shop will repair my machine once they learn it is a 110V (US version).

If anyone has a procedure I could try or can help me in any way, I would greatly appreciate it.
