Don’t sleep on Willow’s bar and cocktails. I stopped in today for a very late lunch and sat at the bar. As others have reported. Willow’s BBQ and sides are somehow even better than ever, but I was especially impressed with their bar and cocktails and how natural they felt in the space.

Their red wine is Ercole Barbera, which went great with the brisket and was priced reasonably. I also had their Summer of George frozen cocktail, which I was a little hesitant to order with the BBQ but the Big Red stood out enough to work well.

I had a sample of their other frozen cocktail the Cabana Boy, and I’d definitely try it next time along with their other cocktails. Their drink program seems solid enough to stop by just for that, and the gorgeous custom bar and great music made it a good hang.

I can see myself stopping in regularly for a drink and to snack on their heavenly marinated tomatoes. The smoked crab dip was surprisingly good too.

I have a large passion vine in a pot in my backyard, going on year four. Normally by this time of year the gulf fritillaries have shown up and started cutting it back, however I haven’t seen one since early summer (before mine had blooms) and I haven’t gotten any caterpillars.

Has anyone seen gulf fritillaries in their yard this year?

I’d like to keep my passion vine intact for the fritillaries I hope will arrive, but it’s also quickly taking over a whole corner of my yard.

I had the eggplant rollatini at Giacomo’s a few weeks ago and have been thinking about it since. I plan to try making it this weekend, but as always am interested in trying different variations for cooking inspiration.

Are there any other restaurants in town serving eggplant rollatini / involtini di melanzane?

Any other standout eggplant dishes in town, particularly Italian styles?

A friend and I were discussing checking out the “Houston’s Funniest” comedy showcase at the Riot Comedy Club this Sunday, but I received an email from Riot Comedy Club stating that effective immediately they have left their long-time location at Rudyard’s and are putting the finishing touches on their new location on Washington Ave.

The tone of the email said “something happened”, and as all upcoming shows are now cancelled it does seem very last-minute. Yet it also included a rendering of the new location, so the move appears to have been in the works.

Does anyone know further info? Maybe I missed some prior announcement of the move.

Puebla’s on Main is my go to, but between being closed on Sundays and the wait during peak hours, I need some back ups or a new favorite.
