Osteria di Mercato - Cozy, A Little Spendy, and Just Okay

I'm forever wishing and hoping and praying that a truly outstanding Italian restaurant will open in Houston. And I thought Osteria di Mercato in West U could be that spot. The scale of the place (small) seems right, as does the focus on seasonal ingredients and handmade pasta.

The dining room is cozy and well appointed, the service is attentive, and the food was fine. But nothing was memorable. Arancini seem so obvious at this point that it's hard to understand how it could end up on a menu this tight. A stracciatella starter was okay, but the cheese was overwhelmed by the seasonal veg. Sea bass stood in for branzino due to a sourcing issue, but the preparation seemed more French than Italian. (Not to hate on a well done Buerre Monté - it just seemed out of place.)

And then there was the pasta. A modest portion done up in a totally Bludorn way - foam and all. I'm not a person who believes pasta must be prepared entirely according to tradition, but I don't think any Italian would recognize the dish we had as even an update on something classic. Again, it wasn't bad - it just wasn't what I was hoping for and it wasn't particularly great either.

We skipped dessert, and left a little bummed that this spot won't be taking a spot in the regular rotation.

Asia Market Thai Lao Food 👎

Used to love this place. Real Thai! Ordered tonight and was awful. Has anyone else found this?

Nam Khao Tod (spicy fermented sausage rice salad) had no sausage. Red curry ordered mild so that all our guests could eat came Thai Spicy with loads and loads of chilis mixed through it. And the most annoying? We ordered morning glory and was served gai lan with no heads up. Bro, they are NOT the same. Total write off.

I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

In need of anniversary dinner help

I’m willing to spend $500-$700, I am looking for either a river cruise or a romantic private vineyard experience near Houston. Something with a country vibe but really nice and private. Any luxury lake cruises on Conroe (or anywhere else near Houston)? Or any ideas for a romantic vineyard experience? I’ve never done anything like this before and really want this to be special for my girlfriend.

Hidden Omakase temporarily closed after car crashes into dining room

Just found out that Hidden Omakase was damaged after a someone drove a car through the place. No injuries reported.

Story below.

By Chyna Blackmon

One of Houston's Michelin-recognized restaurants has been forced to temporarily close after a car crashed through the dining room.

Hidden Omakase, located at 5353 W Alabama St. in the Galleria area, is temporarily pausing operations to repair damage left from a vehicle that drove straight through its windows, its team announced Monday in a social media post.

Video of the aftermath shows a car smack in the middle of the Japanese restaurant that opened in 2021. It left shattered glass, downed walls and broken furniture after having smashed through the space.

"A car decided to skip the reservation list and come straight into Hidden Omakase. Everyone is safe, and we're incredibly thankful for that. We'll be temporarily closed while we clean up, repair the space, and make sure everything is back to the standard y'all know us for. All upcoming reservations will be rescheduled, and our team will be reaching out directly to guests," the post read.

"Thank you for all the love and support already. Hidden Omakase will be back soon, preferably with guests entering through the front door only."

Details of the incident are still unknown. The restaurant and Houston Police Department have yet to respond to Chron's request for more information.

Photos of the restaurant taken about an hour after its social media post show the car had been removed from the property.

Hidden Omakase is one of Houston's more popular and revered restaurants. In 2024, Michelin designated it for its Texas guide book. The restaurant is typically closed on Monday.

It appears The Don is botting their reviews. Same review posted in rapid succession early in the day before the restaurant is even open.

I've never seen such blatantly obvious fake reviews on google maps. I've been to this restaurant a few times and I was just checking in to see if they were still open and saw these reviews.

Low key date night spots and good happy hours on the west side

I’m an inner looper and just started seeing someone that lives in the energy corridor. Looking for places we can go that are closer to her.

We are both big foodies and love to explore new places.

Would love to find some good HH spots too.

Looking for suggestions in between highway 6 and bunker hill.

TIA!

Best dishes at The Chef's Table?

We are planning a visit to the vintage location for an upcoming anniversary. I have looked at the menu and honestly want to try everything (especially every appetizer). Obviously, we can't do that, and this level of dining is really only a special occasion thing for us, so I want to make it count. For those who have been, what are some stand-out dishes?
