Testing out my new dSLR camera in Wicker Park…in 2010

Shared this in the Chicago subreddit a few years ago, but figured this sub might find it even more interesting.

This was shot in April 2010 near my apartment at the time, just playing around with my new camera. Background music is by Nujabes (The Sign).

Might bring you guys back to a simpler time.

Enjoy!

Why doesn’t Houston have an Original Pancake House location?

Sure it’s a chain, but it’s damn good and beats a place like Snooze any day of the week!

Why does Trill Burgers on Rice University campus charge college students more for a burger compared to their Shepherd location?

OG Burger @ Shepherd location: $11.29

OG Burger @ Rice campus: $11.99

Local Foods also has a location for students on the Rice campus and it’s cheaper than their city locations.

What gives?!

What makes Randall’s depressing and HEB not depressing?

I just walked into the Randall’s on Holcombe. My first time in a Randalls’s in 20+ years. Can’t put my finger on it, but the vibe is a bit depressing. Something I don’t find at HEB.

Let’s say you graduate from a state school and get a well paying corporate job straight out of undergrad at age 22…

Not necessarily a cream of the crop investment banking or FAANG job. For the purpose of this hypothetical, assume a job at one of the Big 4 or a tier 2/3 consulting company making $80k/year at age 22.

Everyone in your new hire class mostly went to a good public state school, not an Ivy or an expensive private school. Some have student loan debt, but most don’t.

Why is that when you fast forward 18 years to when this new hire class is 40, the vast majority won’t be worth $2-3M+? Is it really just lifestyle inflation that gets most of them? I get that life happens, but I’m just curious about the general trend.

Visiting this weekend from Houston (Montrose)with my wife and two young kids. What should we do in your fine city?

No real plans, just a weekend getaway Friday-Sunday. Staying at The Thompson hotel downtown.

Kids are 3 years and the youngest is 8 months.

I went to UT Austin 20 years ago, but have only visited Austin a handful of times since then and my last visit was a while ago (before kids!).

Any recommendations for things to do with kids this age, ways to keep cool outside, places to eat, etc.?

Athletic yoga in Montrose/Rice Village/West U?

Any recommendations for instructors/studios that have an athletic approach to yoga? I’m not a yoga regular by any means, but I have taken classes at my gym over the years and always preferred the teachers that had a more athletic approach to yoga, where I was drenched with sweat and felt like I got a good workout.

Doesn’t necessarily have to be hot yoga either.

Any recommendations? I live near the Menil, so anywhere within a 10-12 minute drive works.

Two tickets for sale to tomorrow’s (Sunday) game vs. the Orioles. Section 307 Row 3. Willing to sell under cost

I paid $109.86 total for two face value tickets, willing to sell for $85. Was planning on taking my toddler for Family Day, but didn’t realize tomorrow’s game overlaps with the World Cup Final.

Staying at the JW Marriott Parq right now and my two kids under 3 are asleep, so I can’t go out for dinner. What’s the most delicious thing I can order from DoorDash/Uber Eats right now?

Open to try any cuisine as long as it’s delicious. Am a pretty big foodie and visiting from Houston, TX. Bonus points for recommending something that Vancouver does better than anywhere else.

***UPDATE: Just placed an order for a platter from Miku. Thank, y’all!!

Hiking recommendation with a 3-year old and a 7-month old

Visiting Vancouver next week from Texas and looking for a family friendly hike for our family of 4. The 3-year old will be walking and the 7-month old will be in an Osprey Poco carrier on my back.

What are the best hikes you recommend?

What does Tony do all week Tuesday-Sunday?

I mean “it’s all improvised”, so there’s nothing to prep, right? What does he do 6 days a week?

Staying at the JW Marriott Parq from June 27th-July 4th (not for the World Cup). Will it be a zoo?

I understand it’s very close the the stadium.
