Sam: willing to sacrifice himself to save others (1:many)
Dean: willing to sacrifice others to save Sam (many:1)
---
Sam drinking demon blood helps others but harms himself, which is unacceptable to Dean. He would rather use the knife and kill more people than for Sam to go down that slippery slope. I get his reason for not wanting Sam to drink demon blood but Sam is just one person.
Same with boarding up hell. Sam accepts his death to complete the trials and board up hell. Dean objects because Sam being alive is more important. Again, Sam is just one person. I don't know how many people he would have saved in the future if hell was boarded up but I'm pretty sure it would have been more than one.
And all of that is fine because I get why Dean would pick his brother over the world. Because me too. I just hate how he makes Sam out to be the bad guy when he's the worse guy (in a pure numbers sense).
For all of Edward's mind reading, I like that Jasper actually knows what someone is feeling.
From Twilight, Chapter 19. Goodbyes:
> Jasper and I looked at each other. He stood across the length of the entryway from me... being careful.
> "You're wrong, you know," he said quietly.
> "What?" I gasped.
> "I can feel what you're feeling now—and you are worth it."
I don't think this was Rumple in S4 E18 Heart of Gold. I think this was Zelena pretending to be Rumple in the bar scene.
The acting is very hammy and it's not Rumple's MO to prey on someone that isn't desperate which Robin doesn't seem like he is. And it's not like him to give so much exposition either. We also see Zelena doing a Rumple impression at the hospital later "But, dearie, what does old Rumple get out of it?" - which doesn't prove anything but I think it's a clue for what I'm saying.
Transcript:
> Rumple: No, I didn't come here for the ale. Nor, clearly, for the ambience. I came to make a deal. I've asked around for the best thief in the land, dearie, and everyone's pointed me to you.
> Robin: Yes, well, uh, I'm not in that line of business anymore.
> Rumple: And soon, it seems, you won't be in the tavern business, either. Is that a tax notice on the door?
> Robin: Get to the point.
> Rumple: I can solve all your problems. I need you to go to a faraway land. A land that's ruled by an old compatriot who would not be, um, happy to see my pwetty face again. I need you to break into the vault and steal the Elixir of the Wounded Heart.
> Robin: That's a ridiculously self-explanatory name, and also probably a fool's errand.
> Rumple: It's far from that, dearie, far from that. It does exactly what it says. It cures wounded hearts, physically, emotionally. It's powerful stuff.
I think the real Rumple was aware of Zelena's impersonation and collected Robin's "debt" later when it suited him.

For those interested in the underlying structure of OUAT, here are my wild theories and head canon. Notice how I say 'I think' a lot - it's because I don't know how true they are and it's likely they're all wrong (so please don't be too mean):
* The Black Fairy didn't really pick power over love. She picked power because the alternative meant her son might still die. She needed to keep her power so that she can guarantee he wouldn't die (because she wouldn't kill him).
* Time travel became possible in the past because Emma left the black fairy's wand back in time when she opened the portal. I think this is related to babies that were taken by the black fairy and being sent back in time to their parents just like Gideon was.
* Cruella is important somehow and I think she covertly controlled Ursula. Because the moment Cruella was knocked out (by Mary Margret), Ursula violently started strangling Mary Margret because she was mad at Hook for not being able to return her voice.
* Ingrid accidentally killing one sister and being trapped by another symbolically resembles Emma almost killing Zelena and Zelena and Regina almost erasing each other. Or it might tie in with Regina (as Ana) imprisoning Zelena and stopping Emma from killing Zelena.
* Ogres are terrifying because they're blind in the inside but them seeing you before you die means their eyes are on the inside.
* I think Cruella asked Henry to write her back to life so his family wouldn't be able to (once they got desperate) without considering they might be worse than her.
* I think spinning straw into gold is related to the idea about wizardry from the Oz series where real wizards call themselves witches and turn deception into something with value. And how only fake wizards call themselves a Wizard
* After Hook saves David with Neverland water - I think David accidentally or intentionally doomed his family (Mary Margret and Emma) when he passed around Hook's flask of "rum" - Regina is the only one that turns it down. I think Hook also drinks the rum in the scene after because he feels bad (he doesn't say anything though) but he does tell Pan that Emma would see him as a man of honor.
Follow the lady is a reference to the three card monte scam which requires a shill and a mark. I think Hook is a shill and maybe Neal too. The mark is definitely Emma and maybe Rumple. The dealer is definitely Pan and also maybe Rumple.
> Three-card monte is a classic short con where a shill pretends to conspire with the mark to cheat the dealer, while in fact doing the reverse. The mark has no chance whatsoever of winning at any point in the game. In fact, anyone who is observed winning anything in the game can be presumed to be a shill
> The move, done properly, is undetectable. Even the shills pretending to play are often unaware of where the money card actually is without the dealer employing signals of various kinds to let them know where it is.
> The psychology of the con is to increase the mark's confidence until they believe they have a special ability (like Emma and her superpower) to cheat the dealer and win easy money. Everything the monte mob does is geared towards creating that mindset in the mark.

I think most characters are asleep and there are some things that wake them up temporarily:
* Rumple and kisses (either kissing him or him kissing you)
* Hook and drinking
* Zelena and jealousy (Regina is awake when Zelena is jealous of her and Zelena is awake when she's jealous of Regina or vice versa)
* Cruella has the power to command animals directly and humans indirectly
* Snow White always find what she needs (master thief)
* Mary Margret has the power of hope (and I think she can command others except Emma)
* Emma needs to believe she earned the ending
* Prince Charming pays a heavy price (so others don't have to)
I started collecting tea tags as a way to track which blends I drink most. I'm not sure if this counts as valid content but here is the distribution of my last 141 cups:
* Lemon Lift: 50 (current favorite)
* Peak Energy: 24
* Butterfly Pea Flower: 16 (nighttime favorite)
* Golden Turmeric Honey: 15
* Peppermint: 9
* Benefits (Balance): 5
* Spiced Chai: 4
* Vanilla Chai: 4
* Vanilla Caramel: 3 (this is only low because I ran out when I started)
* Other: 11
To me, Rosalie is someone that is honest with herself and those around her. She doesn't pretend to be better than she is which makes her consistent between what she values and how she acts.
Notice how:
* Edward has 2 medical degrees but Carlisle goes to Rosalie for help to keep him up-to-date with medicine
* Bella is closer to Alice but goes to Rosalie for help when she wanted to keep her baby
I think it's so powerful to know where someone stands and Rosalie does this in spades.
I also love how she was a daddy's girl from her human life and applied that to her vampire life with Carlisle. I think she has the closest parent/child bond with Carlisle *because* he lectures her and *because* she throws tantrums. Edward doesn't have this. He doesn't believe he can behave badly and still be loved for it and he tries so hard to be someone Carlisle can be proud of instead of just being his son. To his credit though, his human life didn't give him any experience for how to be a father's son.
Excerpt from the illustrative guide:
> His father, a successful lawyer, provided Edward with many advantages, including music lessons and the opportunity to attend private school; however, although his father provided for Edward in material ways, he was emotionally distant and often away from home on business.
This theory came from musing about the name "Goro" which means fifth son.
I think Heiji Shindo is related to Hachi the flesh trader and Boss Hamata. We know he's related to the dojo guy but ironically we don't know his name which I think would be the point that his most honorable brother is unnamed.
* Heiji - means peace (fitting, since he doesn't deal with danger or do anything)
* Hachi, the flesh trader- means beetle
* Boss Hamata - no idea what Hamata means and ChatGPT doesn't know either (I also think this non-meaning name was intentional)
My guess for the name of his samurai brother (ironically unnamed) is:
* something that starts with H and
* related to tengus (crows)
so maybe Haruto (soaring) or Hayato (falcon).
---
Characters I think could be related for contrast against Heij's maybe brothers:
* Seki - his name is a function related to barriers and checkpoints
* Kaji - her name is a function related to smithing
* Eiji - his name is a quality related to excellence and/or governance
Their names are related:
* Kaji's name is related to herself and to Eiji.
* Eiji's name is related to himself and to Seki.
* Seki's name is related to himself and Kaji.
They are also related to the four paths to greatness and I don't think their names having four letters was an accident either:
* Seki is a master farmer (orchids, Akemi)
* Kaji is a master merchant (desires, art of sex)
* Eiji is a master artisan (swords, Mizu)
* Mizu is a master warrior (art of revenge)
Nouns related to the four white men:
* Violet - opium
* Fowler - firearms (fowling means hunting, shooting, or trapping of wildfowl)
* Skeffington - ?? (no clue)
* Routely - also no clue but maybe logistics
---
This goes off point from what I'm saying above but I think the reason Seki and Eiji can raise characters like Akemi and Mizu is related to losing a sister (perhaps to prostitution). And I think it's related to the speech fowler gave about how he lost his sister (but not as dramatic because death by famine and lost to prostitution are different).
Ironically, I think the reason Fowler recognizes Mizu as female is related to his respect for women (even as he's crushing her bones). Mizu fights a lot of men and they all think she must be a man (and then a demon when they lose). They can't fathom that she's female and I think that's a bigger disrespect for women and their strength.
The wife from episode two that wanted a new husband is married to the soba guy that caught the Shingi last year!! (This is episode four at the 18 minute mark). I thought this was hilarious. An unexpected hidden gem.
I also really like the concept of the festival (Hadaka Matsuri) because anyone that catches the Shingi must have:
* really wanted it (like the soba guy),
* approached it differently (like Ringo),
* or been really lucky.
And I like how the second best soba guy can resent being second but also appreciate compliments because of their infrequency and direct customers to the first best soba.
and yes, I hate how I can't take a normal screenshot on my phone and had to take a picture of my TV but what can you do.
I think Charlie and Bella's gift to shield their minds was developed as a response to Renee's mental thoughts. And as a response to their shields, Renee's mental projections got louder which made their shields tougher. The dynamic would look very much like the [Red Queen theory] in biology.
From Midnight Sun:
> Renée's physical voice was perfectly normal, similar to but a little higher pitched than Bella's own. Her mental voice, however, was piercing. It was fascinating to watch how the other minds responded. No one seemed to notice the ringing mental broadcast, yet everyone was compelled to help her. Somehow, they were picking up on her need, and unable to ignore it. I listened, mesmerized by the interplay between her mind and theirs. An orderly and a nurse led her through the halls, towing her small bag for her, anxious to help.
---
Charlie developed his shield as a response to his environment and then genetically passed it to Bella. Or maybe it's like learning a new language and Charlie's shield is weaker because he learned it as an adult while Bella learned it as a first language.
From Wikipedia:
> Predator-prey relationship between rabbits and foxes following the principle of the Red Queen hypothesis. The rabbit evolves increasing speed to escape the attack of the fox, and the fox evolves increasing speed to reach the rabbit. This evolution is constant; were one of the two to stop evolving, it would go extinct.
