Help a lapsed fan

Years ago (decades?) I read Crytptonomicon and Snow Crash. It feels like a lifetime ago, but I remember enjoying them, especially Crytptonomicon. I remember buying The Diamond Age but never finished it.

Then came work, marriage, kids, pets. I've continued reading, but it feels like life pushed me towards literary fiction, and away from sci fi and fantasy.

I know he's released a lot of work since then. I read a snippet from Anthem, but can't say it caught my attention. The Baroque Cycle looks like too big of a commitment to reacquaint myself with his work.

So the question is simple: which book would you recommend to help me jump back in? Thanks in advance.

Deciphering Norway's military lists

I'm having trouble understanding and transcribing the information in my ancestor's military records from Norway.

  • Both records agree that he was "confirmed" (?) in 1881. He would've been 14 at the time, and a little young to be enlisted.
  • The first record (second row in the table) lists dates starting in 1881 and ending in 1886. The hvor column has some numbers that mean nothing to me! The next column ("dead / transferred?") has unreadable writing.
  • The second record (third row in the table) lists dates starting in 1884 and ending in 1889. In the "fra" and "til" columns I think I can make out Bergen, Scotland, Danzig, and England. This second record seems for be for "maskinister og fyrbøtere" ("machinists and stokers").
  • Both records seem to agree that his enlistment ended in 1889.

So, my guess is that the first record lists information about his initial enlistment, perhaps as an ordinary seaman. The second record then lists information about his career as a machinist.

I'm hoping there's someone out there with experience looking at these kinds of records who can help me decipher this information.

Danhausen after the Knicks lost last night

Context:

  • Danhausen uncursed the Knicks.
  • Then they won 13 straight.
  • Last night they lost.

I wonder why.

Every day occurence now

Due to construction near Vesterbro Torv, one trash collection was closed (in front of Prins Pizza).

Now people do this every day on Janus La Cours Gade.

There are two other trash collection points, literally one minute walk away. It would take someone two minutes to walk to another trash collection that is not full.

Why just leave it on the ground?

Home view automatically changes from Compact to Card once a week

I'm using Reddit on my Windows laptop.

Every week my Home view changes automatically from Compact to Card. I change it back to Compact, and a week later, it changes back to Card again. And so on. It's not always exactly one week, but it happens approximately once per week.

Why does Reddit keep resetting this setting?
