How to use the word “that”?

I understand how to use it when you’re referring to something specific (ex. “Look at that!”), but do I need to use it in the sentence, “I’m glad that the exam wasn’t too hard for you,” or can you exclude it? I can’t remember other examples off the top of my head at the moment and I don’t know how to describe its function, but does this also apply to similar sentences? I hope I explained myself well.

Edit: Reddit is not allowing me to comment under my post right now so I am editing my post to thank everyone for the helpful explanations and advice I have received!

GxB male yandere stories where the girl isn’t overly sexualized and the yandere is loving?

Any reccs for straight romances where the girl isn’t overly sexualized (like no overly big chests or suggestive shots of her butt and legs) and the male yandere isn’t a selfish prick who only wants to have sex with the mc?

Is it possible to learn Korean without being able to hear?

My hearing is pretty crappy but I’m not completely deaf. I’ve taken an interest in studying a foreign language so I’m wondering how possible it is to learn Korean (or any language in general besides sign language) without being able to hear (or hear well). I’ve already bought the first Korean Made Simple textbook to get started but I’m curious if it’s necessary for me to be able to speak it, like understanding how the letters are pronounced or if I can learn it just by the letters. I’m not sure if that makes sense haha. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, this is my first time learning another language. Thank you in advance!

Edit: Thank you for all your answers! I received a lot of helpful advice! I am going to continue to study Korean the best I can!

I feel like the harder I try to get better, the worse I fail at it so I end up taking 2 steps back for every step I take forwards. Sometimes I can’t even manage to complete my personal bare minimums, which is to literally shower, brush my teeth, and eat at least once a day. I genuinely struggle to do just these 3 things every day. I’m afraid of trying to do any more than that because I get burnt out very easily (such as taking out the trash, which requires an unnecessarily insane amount of motivation) and also bc I don’t want to face the disappointment of being unable to keep it up for longer than a day or two. Not to mention that I’m currently unemployed bc I wasn’t able to hold down my last 2 jobs due to my severe mental health issues.
