Rust is the best game for alot of people, but majority is unable to game it out.
Rust is one of the best games ever made, in my opinion, but I think a huge part of the player base simply can't enjoy it anymore because of work and adult responsibilities.
This includes me and one of my best friends. Back in high school, we could spend entire days playing Rust. It wasn't nonstop grinding either. Half the time we were just sitting in base, watching YouTube, playing browser games, organizing loot, or messing around. The other half was farming, PvPing, building, and raiding. Those slower moments were a big part of what made the game fun.
Now we're both employed. I work as a driver and only get short breaks at home throughout the day. My friend works different shifts, so we rarely get more than a couple of hours to play together.
We could grind all weekend, but once Monday comes, our base is left exposed while we're both at work. If we get raided, we're forced to start over the following weekend, so we usually end up playing games like CS instead.
I've always thought a semi-vanilla server with scheduled offline raid protection would solve this. You could set your work hours, and your base would only be protected during that time. At night it would still be completely vulnerable, just like normal Rust, and I'd be perfectly fine with that. Getting offline raided overnight is part of the game. Getting raided at 2 p.m. because you're stuck at work isn't. It wouldn't remove the risk, it would just make Rust more playable for people with full-time jobs.
Am I the only one in this situation? Rust has never been about playing solo for me. It's about playing with a friend, doing stupid stuff, laughing at random moments, and making memories together....
