Remember seeing a thread a few days back on resellers stocking up stuff they don’t need from deals to sell marked up on reddit; here’s my two cents:
See, I’ve been guilty of/fallen prey to this too, recently spent 2.5K on a serum only to discover the seller had gotten it absolutely free of cost from a glitch, spent good money on a Kerastase freebie because I wanted to try it out (for Kerastase I bought two 15ml bottles, both unsealed, one was a lot emptier than the other even though the seller claimed they were both unused. I genuinely don’t know if it is genuine, sure as hell doesn’t feel like it. It is altogether possible the seller swapped the oil with anything they had lying around and I would be none the wiser and fresh out of 1000 bucks). Sometimes buying from these people feels easier than waiting for the right deals.
But as someone who was engaging in declutter subs long before reseller culture surfaced, I can very confidently say it’s quite a disgusting culture that doesn’t deserve, or frankly in most cases even need our support. The pricing is insane, the hoarding feels obscene (50 products laid out like vegetables in declutter posts- they could’ve been bought directly if we stopped buying through them) you can never be certain if the product is even genuine or unused or within expiry, they have no accountability unlike platforms which you can actually legally complain against if it comes to it, they’re often really rude, yet for some reason they stay in business, presumably because people don’t know any better.
Who’s buying these freebies, especially like a pouch or keychain (most infuriating listings) that come with 2K ish worth of an order along with discounted products for 400-600? I just want to talk. The 10ml Caudalie serum that you could get for free with under 2500 of shopping on nykaa is priced at a whopping 1K. The Sulwhasoo freebies are priced at 400-600, mind boggling. And even if they’re not immediately putting them up for sale- guess what? They’ll wait 2 months and nobody will remember about the deal anymore and comfortably profit then.
Admittedly I’ve contributed to this problem by being a participant but have since decided to just tap out of it- it feels wrong to spend money on shit people got absolutely free of cost in a glitch- we’ve just encouraged this behaviour and a lot of people keep getting duped in the process. Some of them (like me in my Kerastase instance) wouldn’t even have the bandwidth to post on reddit about it. But rest assured it happens a LOT and it needs to stop.
