The Salute: A Motorcycle Tradition

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts lately from newer, younger riders asking about "the nod" or the low wave, and why we do it so much more consistently than people driving cars... and that it seems to be a dying tradition amongst newer riders.

If you look back at history, it actually mirrors a tradition as old as feudal Europe. When knights or traveling warriors passed each other either on isolated roads, lifting the visor of their helmet or raising a hand wasn't just a friendly "hello."

It was a functional salute that meant two things: I recognize you as a peer, and I am showing you my hand is off my weapon; we are at peace. Obviously, we aren't packing lances or longswords out here today (usually), but the underlying psychology is exactly the same.

In theory, it displays the spirit that another motorcyclist will help you if you seem to be in trouble; they might even tap their helmet to warn you of a hazard or just admiring your bike as they pass and letting you know that, to them, it looks awesome. In general, it's a friendly kindness.

Also, consider that car drivers are encased in steel and other materials, climate-controlled, and listening to podcasts or other distractions. They are isolated from the environment and from each other, generally demonstrating less awareness or "road craft" than other road users.

But when we are on two wheels, we are dealing with the exact same elements, the same shifting kind of traction, and the same distracted drivers. Whether you’re on a 125cc scooter or a 1800cc cruiser, we share the exact same vulnerabilities.

When a rider drops their hand low or gives you that sharp nod from across the median, it’s a modern road-knight salute. It’s a split-second acknowledgement that generally says: I see you, I know the risks you're taking, and I've got your back.

It’s one of the coolest, most uncorrupted traditions left on the road. Keep your eyes up, stay safe, and don't forget to return the salute; it's a just nice thing to do.

Pierwszy motocykl

Hi, I’m looking to buy my first motorcycle and I’m considering two options:
- Aprilia SX 125
- Zontes G1 125

The problem is that I can’t decide which one to choose. I want something that works well in the city, but also something I can have fun riding on weekends.

I’m 187 cm tall, so the Aprilia feels perfect in terms of height and overall fit. On the other hand, the Zontes feels a bit small for me, even though it’s one of the bigger 125s I’ve sat on.

Maybe someone can give me a deciding argument, because I feel like choosing the Zontes is the more rational option:
- bigger fuel tank,
- more versatile (I could load it up with bags and stuff, etc.).

However, when it comes to the Aprilia:
- I’ve always wanted something similar to a cross/enduro bike,
- I got an offer that’s 3k below the catalog price,
- it’s not Chinese,
- I feel like it could be more fun to ride.

I’d be happy to hear any opinions.

Getting used to road speeds

Hello! I done my CBT and got myself my first bike about a month ago, I’m not going out on it everywhere but try to have a little drive around getting used to the roads a few times a week. I’m in my 30’s and never drove a car so getting used to the roads is a challenge. I know the basic rules and such and I always keep my satnav on so I can see what the road speed limits are but where I am very new to being on the road and trying to be aware of all going on around me (where a car might pull out, people crossing, etc) some of the road speeds seem insanely fast for those kind of areas and I get nervous because it’s less time I have to react if something does go wrong, how do you get used to it? Especially on roads you aren’t familiar with? Am I safer going a few mph (5-10) less than the speed limit despite having cars behind me?
I tend to go out in quieter times on the road so that I’m not holding up traffic but I don’t want to be like this, did anyone else have this when they were starting out? How did you get used to it?

Going round in circles to diagnose non idle.

2019 keeway rks 125 EFI

Symptoms: Bike will start but only with throttle assist. Bike will not idle.

That’s it in a nutshell. What brought it to this point was trying to diagnose and fix extremely jerky riding at low speeds where a mere fraction of release on the throttle would result in sudden speed reduction. Basically impossible to control, eg. 25 down to 20 smoothly. So airflow mix at idle was suspected.

What’s been investigated and or replaced. In rough order.
IAC valve. Replaced
Fuel injector replaced (OEM).
Fuel Pump replaced (OEM)
Throttle body removed and thoroughly cleaned.
No air leaks detected (spraying brake cleaner)
IAC valve. again. I’ve tried at least three. One from Poland (OEM) and current one from China.
Coil was replaced. (OEM) Though the original only suspected.
MAP sensor replaced and voltages in spec.
Spark plug changed. (Twice)
Battery New.
TPS was last straw even though previous one didn’t indicate electrical issues. So a new one (China)

The ECU is a year old. And shows no suggestion of fault. It was replaced because the bike would rev wildly and erratically and stall arbitrarily. Behaviour after that was much better and bike was rideable but then the jerky throttle situation arose.

Throttle cable cleaned and adjusted. No tight spots and smooth return.
Fuel pressure is good
Spark is strong
All IAC valves can be heard resetting at shutdown so there was definitely pintle movement.
Air filter clean.
Throttle stop screw adjusted. When I put the throttle body back the butterfly was basically shut. It currently sits about 3x 1/8th turns open. I had opened to 6x 1/8ths with perceived minor changes to throttle action (stalled later) but I don’t think simply opening more is the solution.
TPS reads 0.52v at its minimum adjustment. Currently it’s 0.6 due to throttle stop screw adjustment.
Idle spec is 0.5 - 0.9v

So. Starting requires throttle. Maintaining running requires constant catching manually. Releasing throttle stalls.
I’m at a loss as to what can be done next. I am wondering if an OBD device would give me any useful information. So suggestions there as to type and iOS software would be useful. Keep costs low.
The obd port is a 16pin trapezoidal connection so I’m thinking an adapter cable is not necessary.
Euro 4 2019.

hero Xtreme 125 vs honda sp125 as a first bike

hello guys, i will be buying my first bike soon and i am looking in the 125cc segment around 1.2L. After seeing the specs on paper xtreme 125 looks better but I've heard it has some serious gear shifting problems. i was leaning towards xtreme as it has dual abs because the roads around my place get very muddy and slippery. but after hearing the issues i cannot make a decision. i am waiting to get a test drive of both but before that any of your opinions or personal experience will be helpful. thanks

Keeway RKF 125cc

Hey everyone! Hope you are all enjoying the sunny bike rides… I need help! On Thursday morning my bike completely cut out while dropping down from 6th gear and I managed to get it starting again after 5mins but it then started to pull and cut out in 4th. That night it run absolutely fine till I filled the tank up… it completely died but will turn on in neutral as soon as you go into first or 2ns while holding the clutch the bike completely dies.. even with high revs it just dies.. a lot of people are saying it’s the kick stand but I have cleaned it out and have pushed the pin in and out multiple time to unstick it, I have also gone up and down in gears while moving the bike to release any plates that might of been stuck… if it is the kick stand can I solder the 2 wires together or just buy a new safety pin? I have disconnected the main clip of the wire and it still don’t work?

WEAR YOUR GEAR. Nasty crash because of oil spillage, broken ankle, surgery required.

A reminder to wear your gear. Was going 35mph cruising and did not even notice the oil or understand cause of my crash until paramedics and police confirmed the small oil spillage later. Could’ve been a lot worse as I was sliding for 25 feet until came to a stop. Had a death wobble for a second (not enough for me to react) and came off my bike. An off duty paramedic helped me with bunch of other generous Scots until an ambulance came 40mins later. I was in the middle of Scottish country road with the worse pain imaginable. I did not care about my bike and have no idea what the damage is and im so glad I put myself first.

DXR jacket, scorpian helmet, Merlin gloves and route one armoured/kevlar jeans saved me from much worse. Had doc martens on and even if I was wearing my alpinestars boots, the doctors told me with the way I fell, no amount of gear could’ve saved my ankle.

I am an ATTGAT rider and will never be otherwise.

My new 125 cc moto

After a sh*ty chinese scooter, finally my first brand new (secondhand) ybr 125 custom. I'm so proud of my choice and so excited to enjoy it, it have less than 10.000 km and had only one owner before: A really nice middle-aged biker couple who have changed to a bigger cc.

Any tip, observation or recomendation? I have in mind rutes, solo moto vivac and using it as my everyday vehicle.

My old first 125cc bike Keeway super light

Not a bad bike if you like something that looks and feels a bit more classic.
Comfortable little cruiser.
Replaced a few of the plastic parts with metal as they are flimsy especially round the break light.
Overall good fun bike to commute on.

Bikes not starting😔

Hey, so i recently picked up a malaguti xtm125 (literally a aprilia rx125 just not an aprilia) and now after an oil/ spark plug change it no longer starts, is there anybody that has experience working with these piaggio M545M engines, or anybody willing to help?

After my service i started it up, then it died, the last owner mentioned a bad battery, so i tried changing that first.

What i’ve tried to do: try a different battery, put back in the old spark plug, test for spark, test the injector, it still just cranks with no start

Sometimes it catches for a brief second, then dies.

Thanks for any advice.
