The Salute: A Motorcycle Tradition
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts lately from newer, younger riders asking about "the nod" or the low wave, and why we do it so much more consistently than people driving cars... and that it seems to be a dying tradition amongst newer riders.
If you look back at history, it actually mirrors a tradition as old as feudal Europe. When knights or traveling warriors passed each other either on isolated roads, lifting the visor of their helmet or raising a hand wasn't just a friendly "hello."
It was a functional salute that meant two things: I recognize you as a peer, and I am showing you my hand is off my weapon; we are at peace. Obviously, we aren't packing lances or longswords out here today (usually), but the underlying psychology is exactly the same.
In theory, it displays the spirit that another motorcyclist will help you if you seem to be in trouble; they might even tap their helmet to warn you of a hazard or just admiring your bike as they pass and letting you know that, to them, it looks awesome. In general, it's a friendly kindness.
Also, consider that car drivers are encased in steel and other materials, climate-controlled, and listening to podcasts or other distractions. They are isolated from the environment and from each other, generally demonstrating less awareness or "road craft" than other road users.
But when we are on two wheels, we are dealing with the exact same elements, the same shifting kind of traction, and the same distracted drivers. Whether you’re on a 125cc scooter or a 1800cc cruiser, we share the exact same vulnerabilities.
When a rider drops their hand low or gives you that sharp nod from across the median, it’s a modern road-knight salute. It’s a split-second acknowledgement that generally says: I see you, I know the risks you're taking, and I've got your back.
It’s one of the coolest, most uncorrupted traditions left on the road. Keep your eyes up, stay safe, and don't forget to return the salute; it's a just nice thing to do.
