Need to know what paste and LM need to use for my Acer PHN16-71

As the title suggests, it’s been 3 years I’ve bought this laptop and now I want to get it cleaned and replace my thermal paste. I went to the service Center and they told me that it needs thermal paste for cpu and Liquid Metal or something like that for GPU and all, I’m so confused I called up like 4-5 stores and asked if they had LM, none of them have it

Best Operating Mode for GPU? (Auto, Optimus, or GPU Only)

I have a Helios Neo 16 AI (PHN16-73). I've noticed some quirks running on each different mode and I don't know what to settle on.

Are my fans working 100% ?

Other day I had the laptop in sleep mode and I figured it wouldn’t turn back on alone so I closed it up and put it back in the bag it came with , took a nap and heard the laptop on and woke up and the fans were roaring !!!

After this I noticed a buzzing sound coming from the fan I believe but it doesn’t stay forever only the first few minutes I have the laptop on

The Ultimate Thunderbolt Signal Fix: How I finally got a flawless, rock-solid connection

The Ultimate Thunderbolt Signal Fix: How I finally got a flawless, rock-solid connection.

If you’re using the Thunderbolt / USB-C port on your laptop to run a projector or monitor, you probably know the nightmare I was dealing with. I have a high-end gaming laptop (Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S 2025), and for weeks, I couldn't get a rock solid stable image.

The problems I was having:

  • The signal would just cut out randomly after a few hours of use.
  • If I powered off hibernated or restarted my laptop my external projector/monitor would say "No Signal."
  • Sometimes the screen would turn a weird green color for no reason.
  • I use magnetic adapters to save my ports from wear and tear, but if I even slightly nudged the cable while closing the blinds, the signal would die and wouldn't come back without a reboot or some serious finagling or propping up the wire just right.

I tried a high-quality USB-C to HDMI adapter, but it was nothing but glitches. I was about to give up and assume my "ingenious" magnetic adapter plan just wouldn't work.

How I accidentally fixed it:

I happened to have a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter made by the same company lying around. I also had a passive DisplayPort to HDMI cable for my desktop graphics card lying around. I decided to try a "weird" chain just to see what happened.

I continued using my Aufu brand 24-pin magnetic adapter system because I love how the insert sits nearly flush with the back of the laptop and it's design is superior to other magnetic thunderbolt because it has an insert that keeps it straight and level.

I simply unplugged the USB-C end of the magnetic adapter and snapped it onto the USB-C to DisplayPort adapter instead. Then I used that passive DP-to-HDMI cable to reach the projector.

It was like magic. Everything worked flawlessly.

The "Magic Chain" Recipe:

If you want to fix your signal issues, stop using USB-C to HDMI adapters. Use this exact setup instead:

  1. The Port: Either your Thunderbolt 4 port (connected to the dGPU) or your other USB-C port (connected to the iGPU). This fix works perfectly on both!
  2. The Connector: Aufu brand 24-pin Magnetic USB-C adapters. These are designed to stay seated and connected even with a heavy cable behind them. Because they use all 24 pins, they fully utilize all functions including 240W power, 100W charging, and 40Gbps data transfer.
  3. The "Secret" Adapter: A USB-C to DisplayPort (Female) adapter.
  4. The Cable: A Passive DisplayPort (Male) to HDMI (Male) cable (or a standard DisplayPort cable if your monitor has a DP port).
  5. The Display: Plug the cable into your projector, TV, or gaming monitor.

Tested & Confirmed:

I’ve now tested this "daisy chain" with two different setups and both work perfectly:

  • Setup A: USB-C Adapter -> Passive DP-to-HDMI Cable -> 1080p Projector.
  • Setup B: USB-C Adapter -> Standard DisplayPort Cable -> LG Gaming Monitor.

Even using an old DisplayPort cable from my desktop, it worked flawlessly. (Note: I haven't tested a direct USB-C to USB-C video cable because I don't have a display that accepts Thunderbolt input, but for everything else, this is the fix).

Why you should try this (especially if you're a skeptic):

I’m not a computer scientist, but these laptop ports seem to "prefer" talking to DisplayPort gear rather than HDMI gear. When you go straight to HDMI via USB-C, the connection is very "fragile." With this DisplayPort setup, the connection is rock-solid. Now, if I bump the cable, it might flicker for a split second, but it snaps right back to a perfect image.

Before you tell me "that shouldn't make a difference," just try it. This whole setup is incredibly cheap. I got my parts from AliExpress and spent about:

  • **$6** for the Aufu Magnetic Adapter
  • **$6** for the USB-C to DisplayPort adapter
  • **$6** for the DP-to-HDMI cable

For less than $20, I fixed a problem that was driving me crazy for months. It works on the dGPU, the iGPU, and survives restarts and bumps perfectly. If you're tired of your screen cutting out, just copy this setup and move on with your life!

Hardware I used:

$6.04 - 24 Pin AUFU USBC 4.0 Thunderbolt 3/4 Magnetic Adapter (Good Idea To Buy Extra Tips & Heads)

$5.01 - Thunderbolt / USBC 4.0 to DisplayPort (female) Adapter

$6.74 - 1M DisplayPort to HDMI Cable Passive (Haven't tested: 2M, 3M, 8K)

It took me a long time to write this post if it helps one person I'll be thankful. I'm not a shill for AliExpress it just so happens that they have all the stuff that I needed.

I used an AI to verify the engineering here. Basically, these ports are native to DisplayPort, so keeping the signal in its 'native language' prevents the fragile handshakes and crashes common with direct HDMI adapters. If you want the full technical breakdown, just ask!

EXTRA PRO TIPS:

Use AUFU branded Magnetic 9-Pin USBC Cables that support ALL fast charging protocols. I have a nine pin magnetic tip in every electronic device that recharges and I use one cable to recharge them all at full speed.

540° USBC MAGNETIC CABLE ADAPTER APPLE USB-C MICRO USBC

90° 9-PIN MAGNETIC FAST CHARGING CABLE (my fav - no moving parts)

9 PIN USBC-USBA MAGNETIC ADAPTER - Pair with a flush USBA-USBC adapter and you have a quick disconnect adapter for any USBA dongle - Mice, Keyboards, handheld keyboards that can wake your computer unlike BT keyboards.

FLUSH USBA TO USBC ADAPTER

9 PIN 540° USBC CABLE 1M/2M

I have a small collapsible multiport Tooki 67W GaN QC 4+/PD 3.0/PPS Wall charger, unfortunately it's sold out everywhere.

Brand new Acer Predator Helios 16S AI not powering on

I bought a Acer Predator (model: PHN16S-71-78U4) but when I open the box and plug it in, nothing happens, no lights, no screen, nothing. What would be the reason for that? I bought it on discount and dont want to return it if possible. I saw some people mention about resetting the battery. Could anybody help me out or anybody had the same problem?

BIOS Issue - Acer Predator PHN16S-71 does not turn on without being plugged in.

I have had this laptop since December and it's been great. However, since the last BIOS update, performed automatically by Windows Update to v1.26, the laptop doesn't boot unless it's plugged in to a power source.

I have used the original charger of 230W, a 330W charger, and also a 100W USB-C charger and laptop boots normally as soon as it is plugged in and I can take out the charger immediately after, and it works completely fine. It's the same with hibernate. Sleep works fine.

This may have been an isolated issue, but my brother has the same laptop and suffers from the exact same problem. Also, the fact this problem started the day after the BIOS update.

I’ve already tried resetting the BIOS settings and checking Windows power options, but nothing appears out of the ordinary.

CONSTANT Crashes

Got this laptop (Predator Helios Neo 16S AI 5070ti) late december, its been constantly crashing at least twice a day since the beginning.

Happens regaurdless of weather laptop is in quite/balanced/preformance mode, and plugged in or not.

Its the same story every time, everything freezes, then I get a black screen with the text "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart, Stop code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (0x116) what failed: nvlddmks.sys"

This task happens doing very light browsing, I'm 100% sure the GPU/CPU isn't overheating. Runs 50-60C at pretty much all time.

I've tried booting into safe mode and completely removing then installing nvidia graphics drivers via DDU, but it didn't fix the issue.

Haven't tried messing with bios updates because I'm not sure if it would void the warrenty, and I don't think that would fix it either, given the error message and other users reports having the same issue.

Worried about liquid metal

Recently ordered the Helios Neo 18 AI and found out it has liquid metal. I took a look at some posts in this sub related to the matter and I'm still confused: should I be concerned or nah?

I plan to keep it on the desk mostly but tilted at an angle all the time to allow more air for the fans. I live in an extremely hot country (it'll be nearly 49C in a month), and I'm worried about the longevity of LM, since this is an expensive device

Basically: when I get the laptop, should I replace it immediately with PTM-7950 (given the angle I'll keep it at + ambient temps), or should I replace it after a year or two with PTM-7950 when it needs repasting? I'm not a technical guy so any help would be :)

Thx

My Helios Neo 16S experience has been a rollercoaster ride

Title pretty much sums it, I had quite a few highs and lows with this laptop that I just wanted to share with the other users and probably potential new users.

I had mine for a few weeks now. I bought it refurb for $1K from the Acer store in ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/257213818024). It came on a generic box but overall the laptop was basically flawless and there isn't any scratches or dents in there. The battery has been probably replaced upon checking the initial cycle. I already did my research before buying this and came to the conclusion that I'd accept all the flaws regardless cause of the performance you're getting for the price.

Immediately, I setup up dual booting and installed linux on it thinking it would have better performance but there are some quirks like the temperature spikes here and there and that the battery life is way down (got only 2 hours at most and usually lower on eco) which made the overall experience worst especially since I wanted to use this for work as well, doing some programming and documentations. But anyways, here's a few lows I've encountered and experienced so far:

First, again I'm a dumbass thinking that linux will make it better. Well it does give you the ability to go to 60hz but there is no effect on the battery life. You could stick with that 60hz refresh rate or even enable the variable refresh (48-60 which is the lowest) and still get around 2 hours or less battery life and this is on eco with predator sense / linuwu installed.

Second, on gaming, the CPU just gets too damn hot (100c hot). Again, I was able to install the predator sense but there isn't really a better way of taming the temps without doing a lot of modifications on the BIOS (which I had some issues as well). I tested it initially with just freakin Metal Slug, the first one. It's not even 3d and I'm getting 100c on the CPU? like what in the actual F.

And speaking of the BIOS, basically, the BIOS sometimes has a bug where in if you try going to the advance menu, everything hangs (some users encountered it already). The first and second time I encountered it, you can easily just fix it by reverting everything to optimized default, but then the next time it happened, even if you use F9 to revert everything to default, nothing happens and the screen just hangs (I managed to fix it somehow by switching the graphics back and forth from nvidia to intel and then doing a lot of restarts hoping that would fix it). This is a major issue cause you can't really reflash a BIOS. I encountered this multiple times already. Right now I had it fixed but for now I'm pretty much afraid of doing a lot of changes on the BIOS.

And so I went back to windows, disabled the aggressive power settings on battery but left it enabled while plugged in, then enabled all power efficiency settings, I didn't use throttle stop, have a laptop cooler, nor change the BIOS settings for turbo power (cause I'm afraid the BIOS might be borked again) and just switched to 120Hz on intel, adjusting the brightness and contrast a bit and everything's near perfect now. Yesterday I had 54% battery on eco mode starting at 9:30am and managed to use it for casual browsing and streaming til 1:30pm. That's around 4 hours on half the battery which is good enough for me. I was still doing some test with 60hz and managed to have it only somewhat working (still very dim but can easily be adjusted) but I'm still figuring out how I'd be able to remove the random flickering (or if it can be removed at all, not sure, I just used claude for my test).

So for now atleast I've completely transferred my workflow back to Windows and just did some optimizations here and there. I was able to play games straight without hitting 100c or constantly having temp spikes even without changing the thermal paste/LM. I still wanted to go back to linux but its just not worth the extra headaches (atleast for now).

TL;DR: What I'm trying to say is that, this laptop isn't something you can really enjoy out of the box without doing a lot of configurations and modifications first. Probably the same as other gaming laptops as well? But once you've managed to tweak it and do a lot of test, the overall experience isn't really that bad. And for the price, I'd still recommend this laptop.

Im so mad I purchased this Acer predator

Ive had my 5070TI for 2months... noticed that since may 2nd it thermal maxed 3x now. fans randomly hit 100%, keyboard stops working, then auto shutdown.... after the 3rd time, now my laptop fans hit almost 100% basically under any gaming super loud. so I opened a warranty claim, and need to ship it out.......... apparently this will a well know widely visible issue all across forums etc. Some say the liquid metal is not well placed, others say various other things including bios firmware etc etc etc. Either way, I paid like 3k CAD, and Acer can shove it up their ass for all I care.

This is 2months old 1 year warranty, and it only used on an open desk with a fan base 24/7. I have a work meeting in Missisauga ONT (their head office fir returns), im going to hand deliver it myself, and see what they can do about it, or get me some type of replacement option instead because best buy wont refund.

Overheating of ACER PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 16S AI notebooks (HOW I SOLVED IT, FOR NOW)

I bought the aforementioned laptop about 7 months ago, and from the beginning, I noticed overheating problems. The temperatures fluctuated between 90-100 degrees Celsius. This caused black or blue screens on my machine. As you know, many of the CPU settings on this version of laptops are locked. Below, I'll explain how I solved it, so to speak. Now, my machine runs at a stable 50-60 degrees Celsius, without a cooling pad.

SOLUTION

I recently bought the same laptop and was looking for a solution to lower the temperature without undervolting my processor, since it's crazy to have the CPU reaching 75°C just watching a YouTube video on an external monitor. Luckily, I found a solution that's practically a hidden option in the power plan editor, which I'm going to share. I think it might work for any laptop, and I'm leaving it here for anyone who needs it:

Steps: Go to the Registry Editor and run it as administrator. Paste this: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7 Then go to Attributes, change the value from "1" to "2", and save.

Now, in the power plan editor, specifically in the advanced options, under "Processor Power Management," you'll find a hidden option called "Processor Performance Boost Mode." This mode forces the processor to exceed its maximum frequency as soon as possible, which is what causes overheating. If you're using an Intel processor, this option is usually set to "Aggressive," causing the processor to constantly exceed its maximum frequency. Simply disable it or switch it to "Enabled," as it instantly lowers the temperature (I disabled it).

My laptop was at 74°C at that moment, and after disabling it, it instantly dropped to a stable 50°C. Keep in mind that I don't have a cooling pad, and I have the maximum processor usage set to 99% in both cases, and the minimum processor usage set to 0% in both cases, as these were tricks I already knew and had modified before due to the same temperature problem.

It's also important to mention that, in my case, I had already performed several additional system optimizations and Windows configurations to improve performance and reduce CPU and GPU load, so I can't guarantee that it will work exactly the same for everyone or that they'll achieve the same temperature reduction.

Now, I'll have a laptop for many more years without any problems.
