I have a problem…and it’s with my school

My school uses a program known as I Ready we use it for 90 minutes every week. It’s one of those Ed tech programs with reading and math. The problem is I was assigned lessons over the summer (everyone was) the thing is they were do the 15th and as of posting this it is the 18th

Some might be asking why I have not finished it, the problem is I ready does not have much accessibility features. If I were to do the math I would have to stare at my screen for sometimes over 45 minutes and I have to squint to read the text because they do not have a Zoom feature.

How do I break this to my teacher and my parents who all believe that I’ve already done the lessons like everybody else?

Don’t get me wrong I love learning, but I just don’t like staring at a screen because it’s both mentally straining and physically hurting. Any ideas on how I can.

(Sidenote, I’ve been doing the lessons ever since I got into the school and every time I do them, especially using the school Chromebook even if I close my eyes, of course they still burn.)

how do i stop feeling so unlovable?

hello! i’m a black albino girl i’m 19 if that matters
excuse any typos im crying as i write this ig this is a rant as well im sorry if its not the prettiest

i was severely bullied almost all my life for my condition but it’s eased up a lot these past few years. i’ll meet an asshole every once in a while but finally i’m in spaces where people treat me like human being and where i can walk into a room without feeling so judged

but all of it still haunts me so much and im not sure what to do… everyone i know is in relationships and hook ups and whatnot and it might sound dramatic but i just don’t feel like i’ll ever have anything of that sort because of how i look and my disability. like no guy would ever want a girl that looks like me and no one would especially choose to put up with the accommodation aspect of being with me like having to drive, not being able to go on dates or hang out outside at all, helping me if there’s a step or a branch (or watch me bump into it or trip all day 😅) i can’t even hold eye contact bc of my nystagmus and strabismus, if we were to buy a house i wouldn’t even want ceiling lights etc
i just always feel like id never truly be chosen compared to the average not visually impaired non albino women it just feels like a competition i’ll always lose in and it makes so sad. they’re conventional looking they don’t come with extra “labor” of needing help to navigate the world, they look flawless and not awkward always squinting, with their eyes shaking, and hunched forward trying to look at something through their phone or a magnifying glass all day. when thinking of their dream person no guy would imagine anything remotely similar to me especially being black i’m like the exact opposite colors a black girl even is. maybe a lot of it is just the horrible things ive been told about myself echoing in my mind all these years later but i just feel so unlovable and uncomfortable in my own skin and it just keeps eating at me. i feel so less than so broken all the fuckingv time
and it’s not even just that. my anxiety is through the roof my paranoiia through the roof i just imagine him being embarrassed of me or his dfriends making fun of him for wanting someone like me behind my back or his family judging him. i just feel like no one would ever care to ever understand and actually accept me i feel i’ll always be seen as a like a circus freak or something

i guess i just wanted to ask how everyone here holds up dating wise or if anyone has overcome something like this. i just feel like i live in constant embarrassment of myself and don’t know how to suck it up and stop.

IEP Transportation Woes

My son has autism and albinism and has significant visual impairment from his albinism. At his IEP meeting last year I was offered transportation and I declined to use it in the morning but asked that he still receive it in the afternoon. Unbeknownst to me, the IEP was marked that he will be ineligible for special transportation next year (now). I signed it because I didn't get any pushback in the meeting when talking about him needing the afternoon rides.

Now the principal is stating he doesn't meet the disability requirements for special transportation because I live within a 1.5 mi radius of the school and he doesn't have like a wheelchair. The IDEA/FAPE verbiage is too vague to really lean on heavily and say he should get it. I know it's not safe for him to walk home from school on his own due to his vision issues but I don't think that's the threshold I can argue with. Additionally I am needing an alternate drop off location (ABA) after school.

I don't know what to do, should I try to get another IEP meeting with last years staff (from early childhood) to see if we can get it added? I am worried they will get strongarmed by the school district but I really don't want to just walk away in defeat. Do I ask for a PWN asking for exactly why he doesn't qualify?

I know the school district already busses other kids (not from my son's school) to this ABA even though they tried telling me they don't do that so even if they give somehow give in to the bus i still have another hurdle to get them to drop him off at ABA which is in the same city at least but not within normal school bus routes.

Dating as a Black Woman With Albinism: Advice?

I grew up quite privileged and my parents were always able to provide the needed things for me such as good sun cream and a good optometrist and they always paid attention to me so I was never picked on or dealt with any harsh bullying because of my Albinism which i’m thankful for. The only time I’d say I was discriminated was when I was in elementary school. But it wasn’t that deep for me because it was things like being called white washed by other black people because I was already different from them and it didn’t help that I had different music and dances interests.

Why I say it wasn’t that deep is because even other kids my age around that time who didn’t have albinism would still get called white washed for their interests. Or stuff like “she wants to be white” I never actually took it to heart though. But now that i’m much older I really struggle when it comes to men especially some Black men because they can be odd.

A few year ago I had a boyfriend who would ask me if we got married when we were older, would our child be albino too and I told him probably not because it doesn’t occur in every generation in my family and it’s also dependent on if the father’s side (in my case) has a person with albinism.

He seemed pretty bummed out about it when he was talking about it. It was pretty odd because he was on some “ I wanna have an albino child so bad” “they’re so cute” “I bet you were so cute when you were younger” and whenever we would get into a disagreement he started to insult my skin color saying i’ll never be black. And some older men would tell me “the prettiest one in a million Albino I’ve ever seen” I always block people like that because that is weird to imply Albinism is ugly. It’s always been a mix of fetishizing and disrespect when it comes to dating/men (black and non-black men)

I’m 20F Black American.

Board Games for Low Vision?

Hi all! Just wondering if anyone has recs for board games that work with low vision. I always want to play with friends, but it feels like most games require you to read really small text on cards. I know I can use a magnifier, but I find that takes too long and I don’t want to slow the game down for everyone else (I do sometimes but only with close friends who get it).

One rec I have is Carcassonne! The majority of the game is just placing down tiles to form a map which is very easy to see. There’s no reading. The only issue you may face is seeing the small figurines placed on the map. I haven’t had an issue with this though because they’re bright colours so the contrast makes it easy to see.

I'm struggling really badly, with life and with loving myself

I'm 35 and have struggled the entire time with loving myself with my condition. My earliest memories are me being treated differently because of my condition. I once thought my only struggles with it would be being othered by people but as I've come to age I've realized I have absolutely no one to talk to who understands my struggles and when I try to talk to people about it they respond in a way that makes it seem like some mental hurdle to overcome and I can live a full normal life but I can't. My vision is too poor to drive and I live in a very car centric city with absolutely horrible public transportation so I'm stuck in my home most the time. I don't really have any family or good friends so people treat me like a burden when I need a ride so I just don't bother asking. I'm excluded from many activities because they are outdoors and despite absolutely slathering myself in sunscreen till I look like a clown, both literally and metaphorically, I still seem to burn and I'm left applying aloe after any outing. Lots of jobs I've not been able to do because of my vision. Any eye doctors I've seen seem to not understand just how blind I am. I ask if there is special specific glasses or something for me and they just give me regular glasses which seem to be a very slight improvement to my overall vision to the point it's kinda optional if I wear them or not as my vision feels bad either way. I didn't realize how limiting this would be growing up and it's making life overall difficult for me in a way no one around me understands. I feel so alone. I feel alien. I know I shouldn't hate myself but sometimes I look in the mirror and just get incredibly angry at what I am and wonder why I had to be born this way. I don't wanna feel like this but I can't help. I'm just hurting so bad and feel alone. I don't even know exactly what I'm expecting to get out of this post but I just need something. Anything. I need help.

Is there racism or prejudice in the Albino community?

There’s a lot of racism in the world and I’m curious whether people with albinism experience or think about interracial dating in similar ways. For example, would an Asian or white person with albinism be against dating an African/Black person with albinism, and VICE VERSA? Or would a white person with albinism be against dating an Indian person with albinism and so on?

I’ve honestly never seen a couple where both people have albinism so I’m genuinely curious about whether people with albinism tend to date within their own ethnic background or if race and ethnicity aren’t really a factor. 🤔

I hope this doesn’t come across as offensive, I don’t mean any harm❤️

I'd appreciate hearing about your personal experience with albinism.

Hello,

I first want to say I know theres a writers page on this subreddit, and I have looked through it, but I want to find some personal experiences from people with albinism so that my character is an accurate and fair representation of this community. I have been writing this story for about six months now, and want to refine my character. I completely understand and apologise if this post goes against any rules and needs to be removed.

Im writing a story about a girl with albinism who's forced out of her quiet, comfortable life into a university of sorts that entirely new. Her eyesight is poor, and she's never been outside of what she knows, so I wanted to ask for personal experiences. How have you been treated by communities you didnt know? How did you adjust to new places and people and what did that feel like? what's are the most frustrating things you experience as a person with albinism and how do you go about them? Alternately, are there any aspects about the condition you like or can use in your favour?

If anybody is interested in explaining their side of life to me, id be so appreciative. If not, thank you for taking the time to read my post. I promise this isn't fan fiction or a passing interest; I feel extremely passionately about this story and its purpose, and would be happy to explain further or clarify anything.
