Chelsea boots are great, but lace-up service boots deserve more love

Everyone jumps straight to the classic slip-on boot the second they want to move away from sneakers, but a solid pair of lace-up service boots is severely underrated. They add so much more texture and structure to a casual outfit, especially when paired with heavier denim or fatigue pants. It feels like the convenience of the pull-tab has completely taken over the local footwear scene

Favourite Purchase over the last 12/24 months

With EOFY fast approaching and every company about to bombard us with emails, what has been your best/fav purchase in the last couple of years for MF or MF adjacent?

For mine: MF: Whitesville T's - bought 2 to give them a try, will be buying more on their next release, and Barbour Corbridge jacket - doesn't get any better for mine.

Adjacent: Henson AL M Razor - using Merkur blades. Superb shave everytime and no more 5 o'clock shadow at 1pm lol

Gym wear brands

Can anyone recommend some brands you like for gym wear? I usually just wear Nike trackies, some flat shoes and an old tshirt to the gym which I enjoy and am comfortable in but honestly I look homeless compared to everyone else there!

Anyone got some brands they enjoy working out in that won’t break the bank?

Saw this floating around and figured I’d share because petrol prices are crazy right now and free money is free money 😂

ING are currently offering anyone who signs up before May 31st a $100 bonus. No catches other than doing a few easy things once your account’s open. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Use the following link to sign up - Link here
  2. Deposit $1000 (you can transfer out once you receive your $100 bonus)
  3. Make 5 purchases - Just use the card you get sent on your weekly shopping (split the transaction into 5 payments at checkout)
  4. Open a savings maximiser account and deposit $1 into it (you can do this straight away once you sign up they walk you through everything)

Then you just sit back and wait for ING to drop that $100 straight into your account. You can transfer it to your main bank, or spend it with the ING card, up to you.

Took me less than 10 minutes to do everything and it’s one of the easiest bonuses I’ve seen. Longest part is waiting for the card to arrive but once you have it you can just use it with your regular shopping for 1 week.

A collection of Australian Produced Clothing Brands

Earlier this week I asked for some recommendations for Australian Produced clothing, and I got some great recommendations across a few posts. I thought I'd share the businesses I've gotten so far with a little about them.

Manufactured with Fabric Sourced from Australia:

This is a bit more niche. There appears to be a fabric producer in Melbourne that is used for some items, but this is about all I've found so far.

Australian Stitch - Australian Made Basics (Melbourne) "Australian Made Clothing, Ethically Produced in Melbourne. Designed, sampled, knitted, dyed and sewn locally within a 15km radius, every piece passes through the skilled hands that keep Melbourne’s historic Rag-Trade alive." And true to what they say, it's basics. A big argument people make against 'local' production of fashion is price. The t-shirts here are $50, which is not expensive. $43/each in a 3 pack. I bought a 3 pack myself today, and I will update everyone on the quality.

Citizen Wolf - Custom Made Basics (Sydney). Certified B Corp. Depending on the item you go for, there is Australian-Made Fabrics. For example for the organic cotton shirt "We use premium, GOTS-certified organic cotton, knitted locally in Melbourne" The price reflects the custom made nature, as they seem to tailor to your size. It's also got to account for the possibility of sending you the wrong size. If they send you the wrong size, or a bad fit, you keep the shirt, and they send you a new one for free. Apparently, according to a user, its "just around the corner from Hawkes Brewery - perfect excuse to pop to Sydney to get fitted and put in an order."

Smitten Merino - Produced in Tasmania and Victoria from Victorian-spun-Tasmanian-wool. What a mouth full. Merino Wool clothing for men and women.

Manufactured in Australia with Internationally Sourced Fabric:

Fashion Brands:

Informale - (Melbourne) "Artisan-made menswear, influenced by vintage and utility silhouettes for enduring elegance." My Notes: It appears that all of the clothing is made in Melbourne, with fabric sourced abroad (UK, Japan).Melbourne Very Australian style fashion.

Bandsome - Sydney "Since the beginning, Bandsome has prioritised Australian production at every stage. Wherever possible, an Australian made option is considered first before looking offshore. Still today, the majority of our garments continue to be produced in Sydney and Melbourne" Japanease / Australian fashion style. This is what originally brought me into this search. I bought their iki jaket for $389. Which is not cheap, but not expensive when compared to other 'fashion' brands. I really really liked the quality of it, so much that I wont buy anything that's worse in places like Myer.

Bassike - Australia. Certified B Corp. "Wardrobe essentials for the minimalist, underpinned by a dedication to timeless design and sustainable production. Imbued with a quintessentially Australian sense of refined ease, discover fashion basics that are designed to last for years to come."

Denim Smith - Melbourne Denim Clothing (Jeans, Jackets etc). "Every piece is created from the finest denim which comes directly from our Melbourne makers skilled hands and hearts." Production facility located in Brunswick East.

Kerrin co. - "A ‘surf luxe’ aesthetic is informed by a clear casual sensibility that exemplifies a life best lived outdoors." A range of products that largely appear to be made in Australia (I haven't checked every product, but some are made overseas so YMMV). Materials & Details section explicitly states origin of fabric, and location of garment production.

The Lair - Newcastle It looks like they stock a variety of options, and some of them appear to be Australian made, if they are labelled. Their speciality (Leather goods) are made in Newcastle from leather from NZ and Italy.

Jimmy Stuart - Sydney Relaxed yet bold surf style clothing. "In a world where nearly everything is made overseas, we are very proud to still be making our shirts, shorts, swim shorts, knitwear, pants, jeanos, waistcoats, boxer shorts & bucket hats right here in Australia."

pseushi - Australia. "Pseushi clothing is designed to be worn-in, aged-in, lived-in. Utilising high end fabrics & traditional processes. An amalgam of culture, meditations & memories, Pseushi is a travel journal of the times." A cursory look shows T-Shirts are made in Australia, some other garments don't indicate their country of origin.

everwear - Victoria. Australian, hand made denim items, with garments from other countries of origin in their store.

flux - Melbourne. "FLUX is a Melbourne based menswear label, making quality denim & tees in Australian since 1999"

Macrae Studios - Brisbane. A small Brisbane-based brand that focuses on slow fashion and makes everything in house with vintage sewing machines. They also offer custom measurements for their chore coats and some shorts. The origin of fabric is not specified, though mention is made of the deliberate environmental-conscious choices the producer makes when deciding fabrics.

Pass~Port - Sydney. A large selection of Australian produced goods: hoodies, polos, pants, belts, hats, gloves and bags. Timeless casual styles. Australian produced section linked, though they sell other items.

Accessories:

R.M Williams - Adelaide The boots are still proudly Australian made, but as these things go, lots of the clothing is labelled "Imported."

Mongrel Boots - Sydney. "Mongrel Boots has been manufacturing footwear in Australia since 1930" Recently (2018) adding first-of-its-kind manufacturing equipment to its Sydney factory.

Akubra - Kempsey NSW A variety of classic, Australian made, hats.

Wootten - Ballarat Australian made leatherwear, including boots, aprons, belts and some bags. Custom, hand-made to order, with fairly long wait times.

Socks - Multiple Brands in a List

Sportswear:

Regarding these, there appears to be a manufacturing facility called "Ethical Edge Collective" in Brisbane that is paired with "Birds on Bikes" (the clothing brand) that produces garments for sellers in Brisbane. The following are just a few examples, but I'm sure there are more...

Scody - Brisbane "Australian Made Performance Apparel. Designed & Made in Brisbane" Specializing in Triathlon, cycling, running and team clothing. Regarding this, there appears to be a few athletic brands

Birds on Bikes - Brisbane "Birds on Bikes focuses on comfort, inclusive sizing, practical design and local Australian manufacturing. Our cycling apparel is designed specifically for women who want confidence, support and performance on every ride." I know this is MFA, but because these are the apparent original producers of many of these products in the segment, I thought it appropriate to include them in the list.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I will add to this from any comments that I see with brands that fit the Australian-produced exclusivity of this list. If I've missed something, please add it in the comments and I'll try to update this thread.

I've also ordered a few things myself from bandsome, and australian stitch, that I will link review threads to when the things arrive.

T-shirts - way too long?

Does anyone else find the common t-shirt / graphic t-shirt way too long? I’m 6ft, I have broader shoulders and bigger arms but a bit of a soft midsection so they just look awful on me. Is it a skill issue? Surely tees shouldn’t go further than halfway down your fly??

What is something that instantly makes a bloke's outfit look cheap?

For me it is those ultra tight, spray on skinny chinos paired with a heavily branded polo shirt and no socks

Looking for polo shirts that aren't too long, 6'2" here

I've tried Uniqlo and Rodd & Gunn, but both run a bit long on me. On top of that, Rodd & Gunn felt noticeably stiff and rough after washing, which was dealbreaker.

I love the softness of Uniqlo's fabric but just need something that sits a bit higher. Any recommendations for brands that nail both the length and the feel? Ideally something that doesn't swamp me below the zipper.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Ways to layer/wear a quarter zip to make it look less “old man who plays golf” type vibe?

Been loving quarter zips lately, but can’t help but feel they give off a “preppy” or “old man” kind of vibe.

I’m used to normally wearing street wear from CottonOn / factory.

Any ways to layer quarter zips to give a more casual vibe?

Oxford shoe. Need tomorrow.

For reasons, I need to buy some oxfords tomorrow. I live in Melbourne and want to buy in store, not online.

I like buying things that are repairable so would love a goodyear welt.

These shoes will be worn very rarely. Maybe once every year or two. Budget is $300 but can stretch to 400 as I've recently changed jobs and money is tight.

Tossing up the Bared Francium or just cheaping out for something from florsheim. I have to be able to get them in store tomorrow. Thanks

Looking for a ''Sherpa'' or Woolie sort of jacket/jumper that is at least 40/50% Cotton. Polyester irritates me

Hey all. Been shopping recently as its almost Winter. I'm looking to add a Sherpa or woolie sort of jacket to my wardrobe.

Theres a lot that I like from shops such as Ghanda, JayJays, WNDRR etc. but they're all ''100% Polyester'' Polyester is very irritating on my skin and I find I sweat like a pig in it.

anyone know where I could find this style of jumper but in like maybe 40% Cotton ?

The modern fade mullet has become the official national haircut of Australia

You literally cannot go to a footy match, a pub, or a uni campus without seeing the exact same haircut over and over again. To be fair, it is a massive upgrade from the chaotic, messy retro mullets from a few years ago- the clean skin fade on the temples and texturized layers on top actually make it look pretty sharp. But man, have we reached peak saturation point? It is getting to the stage where everyone looks like they are being cranked out of the exact same factory line

Socks for long desk days with smart-casual office outfits?

Hey everyone, I’m based in Sydney and work as a Python developer, so most of my workday is spent sitting at a desk. I usually wear regular socks with chinos, trousers, or casual office shoes, but after a full day they sometimes feel uncomfortable around the ankles.

For those working desk jobs, what socks do you usually wear with smart-casual office outfits?

Do you stick with regular crew socks, longer dress socks, bamboo socks, or knee-high compression socks for long workdays?

Not chasing medical advice, I’m mainly interested in comfort, fit, and what looks normal in an Australian office setting.

Chinos...

Okay, so I am 6'1, 95kg, muscular build and quite a 🍑 which either works in my favour or against me, depending on how you look at it.

Unfortunately when it comes to chinos, and lots of other trousers, they tend to be tight at the rear and when I sit, they compress my balls.

Brings me to ask, anyone know of any brands that have some give down there?

Currently wear MJ Bale, Tommy Hilfiger. They're both terrible for my physique unfortunately. 😔

Sweat proof undershirts

I really need some sweat wicking undershirts. I sweat through clothing like a mf. Back, arm pits, everything.

I would like something that is very form fitting and tight and covers the arm pits, but doesn't come up too high on the chest. Almost exactly like the following undershirt https://thompsontee.com/men/sweat-proof-shirt-slimfit-bamboo-v-neck.html

However, these tees are really expensive on their own, plus the shipping to Australia is $60+.
I'm a full time student so I don't really have the cash to be throwing around.

I'm looking for Australian, reasonably priced alternatives. The only research I have found is quite dated.

Best underwear for outdoor work?

Mate at work swore it was my pants causing the chafing. OK. Bought a whole new set. Still the same. Thought maybe the fit was off so I grabbed another pair of work shorts too. Two full sets of gear now and nothing’s changed 😅 Clearly not a pants problem

What underwear actually works for outdoor work?

Best platform to sell second hand clothes

Hey All,

Does anyone here sell any of there clothing online?

I have a new pair of MJ Bale chinos and a new Polo Ralph Lauren polo shirt that I won't wear and would at least like to recoup some of the cost.

Where is best to list them for the best chance of selling?

OK for elderly wedding guest?

I'm helping a 76 year old friend decide what to wear to a relative's wedding and based on what's in his current wardrobe have come up with this outfit of blue suit with pink and white shirt - https://imgur.com/a/NdLMS2a

The dress code is "garden cocktail".

Is this OK? He's a pensioner and doesn't have a lot of money to spend on new clothes.
