Our ducks are about to go off the starter crumble with 22% protein. They now need to go to grower pellets with 15-18% protein.
I cannot find a brand specific for ducks with that protein range. The Purina all age duck food is 19%…not sure if that’s what I should buy, any info is welcome
Hello! My 11 month old duck Harrowhark unfortunately got chased and injured by a new dog at the home. She normally lives in the backyard with her two sisters, Gideon and Ianthe, roaming the garden beds. The dog escaped and wreaked havoc but now is secured inside.
The injury took place on the morning of Saturday, May 9. I took her to the vet emergency room and they took an X-ray reporting a broken leg bone (I am trying to find the paperwork to see if they noted above or below the knee). They put a splint on it and wrapped it as you can see in the photo above. They recommended repeat X-rays and replacing the splint every week but I really can’t afford that (the initial emergency vet visit was SO expensive). They also prescribed antibiotics that she has now completed and some meloxicam and gabapentin.
I have been watching videos and planning to replace the splint myself with the assistance of my boyfriend. I’m nervous about it— probably going to replace it for the first time on Thursday when we are both free. So far I have kept her in a large dog crate with minimal movement. I’ve been taking her outside in the crate to hang out with her sisters. Today I put her in a fenced pen for an hour or so.
I’m hoping for advice about doing the splint replacement, how to increase her activity, how long to keep her in the splint (I’ve seen up to 6 weeks recommended), and other advice that I might need!
First a successful nest! Didn’t exactly plan on it, but her hard work paid off. Any tips?
Wondering what everybody thinks? Tractor supply Ducklings we’ve had them for a couple weeks now. They seem to stand pretty upright . Thank you !
Hello! One of my ducks suddenly developed this issue last night; crooked bill, having trouble breathing, barely moving, I have no idea what could be wrong. Have any of you ever seen this before? I have no vet nearby that sees ducks, and I really don't want my duck to die
My drake runner duck got apparently attacked by fox on his neck, he’s alive still. I dried his feathers and tried to keep him warm in some old clothes, I don’t know what to do next though. Is there any chance for him? I’ll post pictures if someone needs to. He has a big bloody wound on his neck with no underskin revealed. Thank you🙏
I'm looking to add a few more members to my flock of layers and stuck between Ancona, Magpie and Muscovy.
I'm leaning towards Muscovy because I am seeking peace and quiet. The runners are way too hyperactive and loud. Even my geese are like angels compared to the runners.
How often do your Muscovy lay and are they actually quiet/peaceful?
It was sold to us as a Cayuga but it's around 1 year old by now and only some parts darkened a tiny bit. Research didn't really help me figure out when they're supposed to go black. The other 3 were sold as Swedish Blue and are roughly the same age. AI suggested she's actually an Indian runner (which we also had for a short time) but she doesn't run/move upwards as the runners if that makes sense? 🤔
Context: I have a small free range flock (three ducks and one goose) for egg laying, but they're mostly just beloved pets.
Yesterday afternoon I noticed one of my khaki campbells (Zuma) had a little bit of blood around the nail on her hallux and had some minor swelling, so I cleaned it up with warm soapy water and let her rejoin the group since she wasn't limping. This morning I popped into the coop to let them out and she's now got a limp even though the toe looks less swollen. She let me scoop her up for a closer look so she's not avoiding me/ touch but I'm struggling with the best way to treat her.
The nail is still very firmly attached so no issues there and there isn't really any redness so I don't want to mess with it too much since it seems very minor but I do need to get it clean and keep it clean until it heals. My plan was to use a povidone iodine swab on the area just to get it nice and disinfected and then separate her (essentially in a single brooder set up) from the other three for the day so they could roam outside and she could have food and water to herself in a slightly less wet/ messy environment...
Well, she let me scoop her up and put her into the nice cozy first aid box and then she started to freak out when she realized the plan was to separate her from the flock. She was gearing up for a jail break and I didn't want her to tweak her foot even worse so I've temporarily returned her to the group and she seems to mostly be fine, just laying down while everyone else puts around. Is my best course of action just to leave her with the group, keep everyone inside, and apply iodine as needed?
I don't want to stress her out over a minor injury but none of my girls have been injured before and I also don't want it to develop into something worse.
Thank you!!!

I have a duckling, 5 weeks old, that keeps getting in its water tank and getting stuck in there. Its one of those 13 gallon tanks, about 8" high.
It jumps in there so I dont understand why it cant get out, since there is a 2" difference instead of an 8" difference. Is there anything I should do or just keep fishing him out and waiting for him to get bigger.
He is pretty simple brained in general. Constantly hurting his blood feathers and always spazzing out over the simplest things.
Hello all. I am raising 50 khaki campbells ducks and I am only averaging about 22 egg per day. They have their own housing for the night and during the day they are in a fenced off grass filed getting about 8 hours of full sun. They have a small pond with fresh water every day and I give them 150 grams of layer bash each day.
I also give them about 30 grams of fresh fish scraps and mix nutrient syrup in their feed each day.
Chickens, ducks, alpacas, goats, cows, etc are all welcome as backyard pets if you’re lucky enough to grab one of only a couple County-designated homes here in LBC. Sad, really; I think county planners need to build in 6,000 sq ft farm lot every X (reasonable acres apart) from any other and allow residents to be in touch with nature and livestock and animal husbandry, bee cultivation - etc. the more we rely on government, the farther away we get from our ancestors.
Proud new parent of 7 ducklings, 6 weeks old! I have three female runners and four unsexed calls.
I know it’s a little early to discern sex, but as their voices are coming in and their necks are filling out, I’m getting a sense that I may have two drakes and two hens of the four unsexed calls, which would put my flock at a 2:7 ratio total.
My concern lies within mating habits around the size difference between the breeds... As a friend put it: it’s like a toy poodle trying to mount a lab. I’m worried that if I end up with two drakes, they’ll leave the runner females be and terrorize the two female calls, flock ratio be damned.
Does anybody have experience with this kind of size + sex discrepancy? I’m crossing my fingers that I only have one male call, but we all know how that goes…
My duck is a little over a month and just started getting her big flight feathers in and just saw this today what is it!
A family friend fell on one of our 10 ducks. He wasn’t trying to be harmful and wasn’t being reckless, just lost his footing while helping us wrangle them to put them away. Well now she has a broke wing. We took her to the vet and they did X-rays. Our options are basically amputate or euthanasia. There is no real way to fix it. Amputation was quoted at $1800 at the top end. We think we have another vet who can get it done just below $1000. There are not a lot of vets in our area who will even take a duck as a patient, so our options are pretty limited. The part that is super hard for us is there is absolutely nothing else wrong with her, and for such a freak accident, it feels like such a shame to put her down. I also acknowledge the road to recover, even with one wing, is a long one filled with potential complications, isolation, and constant care. We don’t really have a ton of time to make this discussion as the bone has penetrated the skin. She is currently stable with a wrap, pain meds, and antibiotics, but she’s not comfortable. $1800 is crazy and way outside the realm. We aren’t made of money, but I could feasibly afford the $800-$900. This happened a few days ago and we are just super torn. Any sort of help or guidance would be appreciated.
What type of Crested Duck is this? Bird ID says white. But could he possibly be lilac Ancona? Or type of runner? He has like brownish feathers mixed it, also has a dark olive green with black stripe down the middle beak.
Also curious how old it would be roughly?
My guess is it’s female, as there isn’t the curl for a drake.
