Career change to Secondary Teacher

Hi all. I’ve [M43] had multiple careers. Visual effects artist, firefighter/inspector, business accounting. In every job that I’ve had, I’ve always gravitated to teaching/training. I also taught lifeguards for 9 years. I think I might want to take the leap and teach secondary school. Am I too old to do this? I’m thinking of doing the 11-month ubc program. Are secondary school teachers in demand (art/business)? How do you work your teacher hours with a child/toddler getting off school at 3pm? Single dad here. Thank you in advance.

Edit: Is it realistic for me to even get full time hours in the beginning then a full time role a couple years in?

Social Studies 9

Hi Everyone, I am looking for help building a Social Studies 9 course. Does anyone have a course outline and/or unit outlines that they would be willing to share? It's the course at my current school that always gets taught by beginning teachers who don't come back the next year, so no one has a starting point for me there!

Queens ELL

Hi everyone!

I am thinking about doing a second plus 15 at Queens in English Language Learners. In most districts, would this certificate alone be enough to become an ELL teacher?

Graphic designer to teacher career change

Hi all,

35F, Seeing if anyone here used to be a graphic designer or something similar and went into teaching. Wondering if this degree (BA Arts, Major graphic design) is transferable in anyway into a teaching program. I am guessing I'd teach art, or art history, or graphic design most likely due to my degree and experience?

Also at my age is it too late to try this career transition? I have a mortgage and baby on the way so I'd wait a few more years, but I do have some pressure financially to stay afloat. My husband could ofc help during the time I would be in school but I'm also unsure of the $ teachers earn. Especially starting so late in my life.

Thank you

Careers Class

How does your school do this course? Semesters? Quarters? Outside the time table?

What do you cover?

I’ve had to teach Careers 9 a few times and most of what is covered seems like filler. I’ve seen a lot of teachers just let kids play computer games, especially in Careers 8.

Any recommended resources?

Next round of postings

I have heard most school districts close in BC for about 4 weeks in the summer and reopen with a last round of postings the last 2 weeks in august for positions that became available over summer, such as leaves, etc.

Can anyone tell me if this is somewhat true? Thanks!

Teacher Category

Hi everyone!

Last time I tried to post this here, I was promptly told to contact the TQS, but they have been quite unhelpful in this process as I am not yet certified with the TRB. Like, they refuse to answer my questions until I'm certified. So, here goes nothing; I'm trying again.

I (24F) just moved to BC from Montréal after graduating from McGill University. The program I completed is a Bachelor's Degree spread over 4 years. To graduate from the program, you need "150" credits, but only 120 credits are completed at the actual university. This is because, in Quebec, we graduate HS after 11th grade and have to do a 2-year pre-university program at a Cégep (sort of like a college-type thing) to even be able to apply to university. Therefore, even though I only completed 120 credits at the university level, my official transcript indicates that I graduated with 150 because my pre-university program counts for 30 credits. This means that an out-of-province student who is straight out of 12th grade would have to do that Bachelor's in 5 years, with the first year (U0) being a catch-up for those necessary 30 credits.

Does that make sense? Typing that out made me understand why Quebec has such a bad rep in the rest of this country, lmao. Sorry!!

When I look up what Salary Category I will fall into, I get mixed results from different pages. Depending on where I look, I'm either a 4 or a 5, but I would really like to know for sure before I plan my whole yearly budget on the wrong salary! Earlier, a result even told me I might be a Cat 5+, which, to me, makes no sense. Isn't that only for people with a Master's? Either way, that is when I gave up and decided to ask here because I genuinely don't know what to do. I was hired for a full-year 1.0 FTE opportunity and the district is still waiting for me to submit my TQS information, but I can't do that when the TRB takes five weeks to process every single document. Mind you, I started my application in January, so it's not like I didn't try to get this done in time...

Anyway, if you have any insight that might help me understand what Category I'll fall under, please share! I am losing my mind a little bit :)

British Columbia Sci 9

I have been assigned to teach grade 9 science this school year and I need resources.

I have never taught science but I have taught all jr/sr math except grade 12.

Our district has banned TPT.

I don’t know how the typical science class runs but I am in a regular classroom that was not set up for science. I also don’t have access to a lab. I do have a sink.

We do have science 9 texts (the old one, and BC Science Connection) however there are 98 students and 65 connection texts and 46 of the old text. Neither have a teacher resource books.

There is one other teacher teaching science 9 but they have never taught it either.

Questions:

  1. What resources do you use (British Columbia specific)

  2. What does the typical class look like?

  3. What does the typical lab look like -taking into consideration I am in a traditional math classroom.

TIA
