Career change to Secondary Teacher

Hi all. I’ve [M43] had multiple careers. Visual effects artist, firefighter/inspector, business accounting. In every job that I’ve had, I’ve always gravitated to teaching/training. I also taught lifeguards for 9 years. I think I might want to take the leap and teach secondary school. Am I too old to do this? I’m thinking of doing the 11-month ubc program. Are secondary school teachers in demand (art/business)? How do you work your teacher hours with a child/toddler getting off school at 3pm? Single dad here. Thank you in advance.

Edit: Is it realistic for me to even get full time hours in the beginning then a full time role a couple years in?

Can we do this to our mosquito population too?

600,000 mosquitos are being released in Washington DC to help reduce local mosquito population. Only males infected with a bacteria are released. They don’t bite humans and the bacteria they carry prevents any eggs produced after mating from hatching. Google is looking to seek approval to release 64 million in Cali and Florida.

Interested in Beaumont east-indian community

Hi. My wife and I are interracial couple - I am Caucasian and she is East Indian. We are interested in buying a home in Beaumont since I my job just moved me to Leduc. Is there an east-Indian community in the Beaumont area if so where are they predominantly?

I know there’s Millwoods in Edmonton but we don’t want to live in a community that seems to be fully dominated by 1 ethnic group -without sounding racist or anything…. We prefer a community with a mix of ethnic groups.

Trying out Alien Isolation….again.

I see a whole lot of hype of this game. I tried playing it and gave it about an hour. I got quite bored. It’s hard for me to be scared or tense for space settings (was actually not scared and bored of deadspace rm too). I think it’s hard for me to relate or put myself there so to speak. After a couple of years I’m gonna give it another try, does this game eventually pick up?

I liked SH2rm, Cronos a new dawn, all REs.

16 years left till retirement and BC Municipal Pension Plan

Some context, I worked for a fire dept in BC for approx 3 years and paid into the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) at the time. I then moved and got a job with a fire dept in AB. When I got the job in AB, I wanted to transfer the 3 years of time with BC MPP from BC to Alberta’s Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). LAPP gave me some forms for my BC fire dept to verify my hours, however, the HR department wouldn’t sign it off. So I had to take the money out of the BC MPP, which got taxed, and put it into my locked-in RRSP. So currently I have 3 years of retirement money from the BC MPP sitting in my personal bank and 3 years of AB retirement money with LAPP.

My parents are getting older to the point where they may need assistance. I would really like to move back and be able to be there for them. I have a potential job opportunity with a BC fire department.

The fire department in BC has a mandatory retirement age. I have to retire in 16 years if I take this job. Is 16 years of MPP enough? Aside from paying off a BC mortgage etc.

Am I able to transfer my LAPP funds into MPP?

If I am able to transfer these funds. Will that mean I have 19 years of service for retirement?

The money that I took out of the MPP and put it into my locked in RRSP, will I be able to take that out and put it into the MPP- like a buy-back?

Potential move from St. Albert to Langley

Hey yall. I might have a potential job offer in Langley. What is a good neighborhood for a young family. I got a girl that’s 4 years old. We are originally from Burnaby but left 4 years ago- so much has changed and we don’t recognize Burnaby/Vancouver anymore when visiting family.

Are there any neighbourhoods you would recommend for young families? What we like in St. Albert is that I know a lot of my neighbours and the kids play with each other and bike around solo without (almost) any supervision. Like I had it when I was growing in Bby and playing hockey on the streets. I remember visiting Langley a few times at it was very cute - farm-like area with small boutiques but I don’t remember where it was. The fireball looked like a barn.

I also heard the property prices are going down and it’s now a buyers market, which is impossible to imagine. Is that true?

Water damage restoration company?

I got a leak in my ceiling from the rainfall. Any companies you recommend to help me fix the damage and find the source? There are a lot online with mixed reviews.

Which contractor do I call for a leak from rain/snow?

Hey y’all. I’m new to owning a house. Who or what contractor can I call to trace a leak for my house?

One year ago, there was water coming down my interior door frame. At the same time there was black/brown dirty water collected in my ceiling lamp. This leak stopped after that year and never continued.

This year, the same room, the window sill is leaking from the top. The ceiling and floor is dry. I believe they might be related and I need to find out who can trace the leak in my house and give me a plan to fix it. I’m getting my window replaced sometime in August and would like to deal with this soon.

Is there a company that can do this?

If you are an RE fan and haven’t tried Cronos A New Dawn, you must.

This game is awesome. After completing Re9 and the others countless times, I really needed to fill the void. This game slipped passed me cause that ugly ass helmet on the cover 😂 .

If you ever played tlou2 and really enjoyed the part where Abby descends into the apartment and the environment is getting more infected and things are getting more tense. Or the part where she descends into the hospital. Man I wished more games were like that. This game was it! The entire game actually. It has minimal issues but overall it’s very good imo. A lot of people compared to dead space but I didn’t think deadspace was scary and good at all.

The gameplay is a little repetitive but the environments look great, the vfx keeps you on the edge and music score is superb. The music reminds me of Stranger Things or The Thing (80s).

A sequel or dlc to this is an automatic buy for me.

Is there a work around to a check-in, gps tracking app?

I work for a unionized municipal govt that has real systemic issues. Instead of spending money to improve a few processes to make things more efficient-they spend it on the Work Alone app to track us. There is a gray area for a quota per day and I’ve done approx 100 a month where the quota per month is 80. Looking at the stats for the team of 20 other employees- I am the only one who have reached the monthly quote and more. Everybody else is not even close to 80. A few are doing 15 a month.

Instead of disciplining the few that do nothing per month, they “punish” everyone by having a gps tracking app installed on our work phones. This app also requires us to check in every 1 hour and we have 15 minutes to do so. This app is going out next month and it’s being told to everyone that it’s about “safety” since we work on our own-even when no incidents have ever happened in the past.

I absolutely hate this direction as I work super hard to get my numbers in order to stay under the radar. The job is extremely easy for me and I am quite efficient at it which gives me time during my work hours to complete some personal errands during work hours or even go to the gym.

I can’t leave this job because it pays me extremely well with benefits. What can I do? I feel like doing the absolute minimum now or even matching the low performers since nothing is happening to them. Is there a way around this work alone app? My colleague and I have discussed trading days where he has my phone and another day I have his phone. I really don’t want to twiddle my thumbs in the office until clock out time.

Need a work-around for tracking app

I work for a unionized municipal government with some serious systemic issues. Instead of investing in process improvements that would actually increase efficiency, management has decided to roll out a “ok Alone” app that essentially tracks employees.

There’s already a vague quota system in place. I personally complete around 100 files/tasks per month, even though the expected quota is 80. Looking at the stats across our team of roughly 20 employees, I’m the only one consistently meeting or exceeding the target. Some employees are doing as little as 15 per month.

Rather than addressing the handful of low performers individually, management’s response has been to implement GPS tracking and mandatory hourly check-ins through this app on our work iPhones. We’re told it’s about “safety” because we work independently, despite there never having been any actual incidents in the past.

What frustrates me is that I work extremely efficiently and stay productive specifically to avoid scrutiny. The job comes naturally to me, which gives me flexibility during the day to handle personal errands or even fit in a gym session while still exceeding expectations.

I don’t really have the option of leaving because the pay and benefits are excellent. But this change makes me feel like there’s no incentive to work harder than everyone else when poor performance appears to have no consequences. Part of me now wants to scale back and simply match the output of the lowest performers instead of continuing to go above and beyond.

My colleague and I have even joked about swapping phones on different days just to get around the tracking aspect. More than anything, I just don’t want to spend my remaining work hours sitting around in the office pretending to look busy until clock-out time.

I’m (43M) curious if anyone else experiences this.

Throughout my life I’ve always been very goal-driven. Every time I reach something I thought would make me feel “settled” …career stability, house, family, financial security, my mind just moves the goalposts.

There’s always something slightly missing. Or a “next step” that makes the current situation feel incomplete.

Right now, my life is objectively good…I have stability, a family, and I’m doing well financially. But I still don’t feel fully present or satisfied. My mind is constantly thinking ahead or comparing what could be better (location, lifestyle, opportunities, etc.).

Looking back, even earlier in life when things were simpler, I wasn’t really present then either. I was always focused on the next goal.

Now I’m wondering, is this just a personality thing has anyone else felt like this long-term? If so, what actually helped you feel more present or at peace in the moment?

I’m not looking for motivation quotes, more interested in what people actually changed in their thinking or habits that made a difference.

Hi everyone, I may have a potential job opportunity in Langford, but I honestly don’t know much about Vancouver Island. Growing up, most of what I heard about it was negative…things like drugs, homelessness, teen boredom, youth unemployment, and limited opportunities.

We’re a family of three (M43, F36, F3). We spent about 30 years in Vancouver before moving to St. Albert, AB. The only time I’ve been to the island was when I was 13…I remember it being beautiful, and visiting a wax museum in Victoria.

Taking this job would mean giving up a lot of what we currently enjoy: stability, peace, and a lower cost of living in St. Albert. Our neighbourhood feels very safe—young kids (ages 3–10) ride their bikes around freely without supervision. It has a bit of a 90s feel, which I really appreciate.

Our parents are in the Lower Mainland and are getting to the point where they may need more support. At the same time, there are some extended family dynamics we prefer to keep a bit of distance from.

For those who’ve moved to the island from places like Vancouver, Burnaby, the Tri-Cities, or Alberta—how has your experience been? Do you miss the benefits of where you came from?

How’s the food scene there? In St.Albert and Edmonton- there’s nothing here but Tim Hortons, gas stations, vape store, liquor store, barber, burger/pizza joint on every corner.

Sunny days are easy to imagine, but what do weekends look like for young families when it’s raining?

I know the one-lane traffic special in BC—how realistic is it to commute from Victoria to Langford?

If you had to compare Langford or Sooke to areas in the Lower Mainland, what would they be similar to?

What are childcare costs like per month per child? Are there government subsidies available in BC?

Which neighbourhoods would you recommend for young families? How safe do they feel? Are kids able to ride their bikes around independently, or is that unrealistic? We’re mainly considering Sooke, Langford, and Victoria.

Do ferries significantly limit your travel plans (e.g., cancellations, strikes)?

If you’ve made the move, which company did you use?

What are your thoughts on living in Sooke specifically?

Is there a demand for elementary school teachers in the area?

Canada has a shortage of doctors. What’s the outlook of finding a family doctor?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
