Any advice on where to start?
edit: thank you all for the feedback!! it may also help to mention, just for context, that i’m a woman. i also have a few health issues, so unfortunately hard labour / trades probably wouldn’t work for me physically (even though i know the trades can pay really well). some people mentioned asking family or friends for connections, but honestly my family have pretty much told me they don’t really care what i do with my life, which i guess is why i’m asking strangers online for advice instead. i also have an autistic sibling who needs constant care/support, so understandably most of my parents’ attention goes there. and as for friends… i don’t really have any lol. i’ve always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, or something similar, so if anyone has recommendations for volunteer work, paid work, programs, certifications, or literally anything that could help me build useful skills or look good on a resume/university application, i’d genuinely really appreciate it. i think part of my fear is that i already wasted so much time after graduating and i really don’t want to keep wasting more time on “busywork” that won’t actually help me build toward a future career or university. i know i probably sound desperate, but honestly i kind of am. i just want to start building something meaningful so my horrible high school grades maybe won’t define my future forever.
Hello everyone,
I’m 19 and I’m trying to figure out what realistic first steps look like for getting into work or building experience. I graduated high school in 2024, but I didn’t go to university and I’ve never had a job before. My grades weren’t great and I actually failed a few classes due to mental health struggles. Since graduating, I’ve kind of been stuck in a gap where I didn’t really build much experience or direction, and I’m now trying to change that and start moving forward in a more structured way.
Right now I’m trying to build something that can eventually help me with both future job opportunities and hopefully, university applications. To be honest, I do feel pretty behind compared to where I thought I’d be at this age, but I’m trying not to dwell on that and instead focus on actually taking steps forward, even if they’re small.
What I’m looking for is realistic beginner-friendly ways to start from scratch, whether that’s volunteer work, or certifications and skills that are actually useful. One suggestion I’ve heard is getting an Excel certification, but i’m not sure what skills are actually worth focusing on at this stage, so I’m open to guidance there too. I’m interested in anything that helps build transferable skills, references, and some kind of experience that actually leads somewhere rather than just busywork
My situation right now is that I don’t have any job experience at all and I’m basically starting from zero. I also don’t have reliable transportation, so I may need things that are local or realistically accessible. My mental health can be inconsistent, so I might need to start with something part-time or flexible rather than something very rigid, but I can commit a few hours a week and gradually build from there. I’m open to both volunteering and paid work, and I’m also open to things that involve communication or customer-facing work even though I’m more comfortable with behind-the-scenes tasks, because I know I need to build my “people skills” too.
If there are opportunities that are genuinely good or could help me move forward, even if they seem a bit outside what I can manage right now, I would still really appreciate hearing about them. I’m willing to push myself if it’s something that can meaningfully help me long term.
I guess I’m mostly just looking for direction because I’m not really sure what the actual starting point is when you’re trying to build everything from scratch. I’ve asked my parents / people in my personal like for guidance, but they couldn’t care less lol, so i’m mostly trying to figure this out on my own. Any advice is very welcome and appreciated. Thank you!!!
