Any advice on where to start?

edit: thank you all for the feedback!! it may also help to mention, just for context, that i’m a woman. i also have a few health issues, so unfortunately hard labour / trades probably wouldn’t work for me physically (even though i know the trades can pay really well). some people mentioned asking family or friends for connections, but honestly my family have pretty much told me they don’t really care what i do with my life, which i guess is why i’m asking strangers online for advice instead. i also have an autistic sibling who needs constant care/support, so understandably most of my parents’ attention goes there. and as for friends… i don’t really have any lol. i’ve always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, or something similar, so if anyone has recommendations for volunteer work, paid work, programs, certifications, or literally anything that could help me build useful skills or look good on a resume/university application, i’d genuinely really appreciate it. i think part of my fear is that i already wasted so much time after graduating and i really don’t want to keep wasting more time on “busywork” that won’t actually help me build toward a future career or university. i know i probably sound desperate, but honestly i kind of am. i just want to start building something meaningful so my horrible high school grades maybe won’t define my future forever.

Hello everyone,

I’m 19 and I’m trying to figure out what realistic first steps look like for getting into work or building experience. I graduated high school in 2024, but I didn’t go to university and I’ve never had a job before. My grades weren’t great and I actually failed a few classes due to mental health struggles. Since graduating, I’ve kind of been stuck in a gap where I didn’t really build much experience or direction, and I’m now trying to change that and start moving forward in a more structured way.

Right now I’m trying to build something that can eventually help me with both future job opportunities and hopefully, university applications. To be honest, I do feel pretty behind compared to where I thought I’d be at this age, but I’m trying not to dwell on that and instead focus on actually taking steps forward, even if they’re small.

What I’m looking for is realistic beginner-friendly ways to start from scratch, whether that’s volunteer work, or certifications and skills that are actually useful. One suggestion I’ve heard is getting an Excel certification, but i’m not sure what skills are actually worth focusing on at this stage, so I’m open to guidance there too. I’m interested in anything that helps build transferable skills, references, and some kind of experience that actually leads somewhere rather than just busywork

My situation right now is that I don’t have any job experience at all and I’m basically starting from zero. I also don’t have reliable transportation, so I may need things that are local or realistically accessible. My mental health can be inconsistent, so I might need to start with something part-time or flexible rather than something very rigid, but I can commit a few hours a week and gradually build from there. I’m open to both volunteering and paid work, and I’m also open to things that involve communication or customer-facing work even though I’m more comfortable with behind-the-scenes tasks, because I know I need to build my “people skills” too.

If there are opportunities that are genuinely good or could help me move forward, even if they seem a bit outside what I can manage right now, I would still really appreciate hearing about them. I’m willing to push myself if it’s something that can meaningfully help me long term.

I guess I’m mostly just looking for direction because I’m not really sure what the actual starting point is when you’re trying to build everything from scratch. I’ve asked my parents / people in my personal like for guidance, but they couldn’t care less lol, so i’m mostly trying to figure this out on my own. Any advice is very welcome and appreciated. Thank you!!!

TOL - Tomorrow night is your chance to listen to a 2 hour stump speech presented by the Mayor - paid for by YOU, the lowly taxpayer.

Show up. Eat the free food. Drink the free coffee. Prepare to be gaslit for two hours & leave full to the brim of lies & empty promises. Sounds pretty fantastic doesn’t it ??

I want to get out of being a custodian and get a job that can actually pay for my future.

I’m young 26m, dad wants to retire in like 2 years and my mom has always been a stay at home mom. I’m currently an on call custodian for the school district. The pay isn’t enough and it takes too long to get an actual position, I want out. We all live in rented apartment. I can’t sacrifice going to Uni for 4 years while I would have rent due. I’m specifically looking for a trade job, maybe starting out as a helper/labourer in a metal shop of some sorts. I currently make 27.00/hr as a Custodian, I wouldn’t mind starting at the bottom, lower than what I’m earning right now, if it means better pay in the following years.

Woke up this morning hearing speeding car full throttle. Few minutes later heard it again, this time with sirens also. Next thing BAM!!! Loud collision 💥 just behind my place in wayburne crescent. Apparently according to an older gentleman driver still got away on foot.

Party/Events Spaces

Can anybody recommend any event spaces in the area that can accommodate a group of maybe 15 max. Ideally somewhere with outdoor space for yard games but there’s wiggle room.
I’m hoping to have the space for at least 5-6 hours. I was originally looking at renting a space like a Vrbo or air bnb but there’s not a lot of options with outdoor space that allow for events
I’m willing to go out further to Surrey/van/coquitlam but ideally we’d stay closer to Langley

One year on, standoff over RCMP de-integration in Langley continues

It’s been a year since Langley Township announced it was ending a joint policing agreement with Langley City – an arrangement the City said could not be terminated without provincial approval – and neither side is budging.

Do you remember when tractors used to drive on the side of the road so they can let traffic pass?

Now it seems that tractors and lawn mowers just drive straight down the middle of the road even though there's room on the paved shoulder for them to let others go by. I guess there's not as much courtesy as there used to be.

BBQ repair recommendations

I'm looking for someone to take a look at my two BBQ's, they use natural gas connections, but both of the igniters aren't working. I'm hoping I can pay someone local to come by to take a look. If you have any recommendations or if your interested in bidding for the work let me know, it would just be replacing the ignition cartridge on one and taking a look at my blackstone ignition on the other.

Old style milk shake

Does anyone know where I can get an old-style milkshake near Langley City?

If someone has been to Leavenworth and has stopped at 59er Diner, that's what I'm referring to: the kind that's a little thick, which you can almost eat with a spoon.

The closest to that I found was at Rolly's restaurant in Hope, but Hope is too far.

I got invited to JINYA ramen bar friends and family day and had the salted cream matcha latte.

It’s kind of a hidden menu item so you gotta ask the server for it!

Queer/pride event - June 6

Yo! Since there’s been quite a few posts from local queers recently seeking friends/events etc I decided to take initiative and book a patio at a local brewery for us to do a board game afternoon/have a few beers and chill. Event is open to anyone 19+, you don’t need to be queer or identify as 2SLGBTQ+ to join us. If this is a success I’m sure it could turn into a bi-weekly or monthly event.

About:

LOCATION — Dead Frog Brewery, patio

TIME: 1:30pm

DATE: Saturday June 6, 2026

Has anyone received their property tax bill? I remember getting it in early May last year. The online portal has been unavailable for a while now.
