I got him as I was trying to avoid this trait of the lower jaw bichirs. Water quality is good no nitrite ammonia and 7ppm nitrate.
I'm no good at telling species from species yet, what are these 3 bichirs? Petsmart is selling them as Senegals but I have been seeing posts about delhezis and endlicheris being supplied instead.
Sorry for the horrendous quality, the acrylic tanks are hard to get angled shots through.
Hey everyone,
I need some advice on choosing between two tank setups for a bichir.
My thought process: Since bichirs are bottom dwellers, I feel like the 5.5ft tank is better. It gives a longer footprint for bottom-swimming space. The shallow 1ft height also means it is much easier for them to shoot up to the surface for a breath of air.
The catch: The 4ft tank actually holds significantly more total water volume (gallons) because of the extra width and depth, which means more stable water parameters. However, it has less linear length.
Which tank size would actually serve a growing bichir better long-term? Does the extra water volume of the 4x2x2 outweigh the footprint advantage of the shallow 5.5ft?
(For context, I am looking at keeping various types of Bichir species such as senegal, delhezi, ornate and endlicheri).
Firstly~
They will not be staying with the Molly's XD
Just a temporary grow out tank and then he goes in the 150 gallon with the bigger fish
Anyway,
Petsmart sold this as a Senegal.
It's absolutely not lol
I'm leaning toward it being an armored Bichir but guinean also seems possible
My roommate thinks ornate but idk bout that lol
Their name is Kamata Kun
A couple of months ago, my website stock turned a bit dull. No yellow to be seen. I started adding “carophyl yellow” and “zeaxanthin” to pellets before feeding, and now my marbled bichir exhibit very nice, high contrast yellow coloring.
Wondering what other bichir with gold / orange hues could benefit from color additives. I’m thinking teugelsi, royal Delhezi, ornate.
I will keep doing these experiments, but the actual color additives are cheap (a bit annoying mixing up the pellets). I do wish there was a yellow boosting pellet on the US market.
Thanks for viewing my post. I hope you learned something. This video is property of www.ExoticFishGuy.com and is not to be used anywhere else.
Hi everyone about 5 or 6 months ago I got two baby Senegals. They are kept in a 55 til they are big enough to need the 125. Recently Iv been noticing one of them has grown nice and thick and the other looks very emancipated and lethargic which is strange because i always watch to make sure everyone eats so i currently have him quarantined in his own tank ( 15 gal as he is only 4 inches long ) over the past couple days Iv been lightly feeding as to not make the issue worse and he has been eating what I put in there. Is this an issue of him needing to get his strength back and weight back so he can compete for food again or is there another possibility I’m missing ?
Got this guy and a buddy yesterday but he now had that big red spot and I’m pretty sure he ate a piece of substrate but didn’t know for sure
I didn’t realize I had to do regular 50% water changes and it has been nearly 7 months… they have barely grown past 5 inches. I definitely should have come to this subreddit sooner as I was very worried about why they’re not growing. Well… now I know why. Will they grow at all now that I am doing water changes? I feel terrible, I hope I did not ruin their growth completely.
Sorry for the bag photo of the one. He’s hard to find in the tank.
What would be better
(All females) Jack Dempsey two convicts
Or
Delhezi bichir
Would both of these work cause if so I’d go with the first one?
Picked up this tiny albino Senegal today. Until he grows a bit, I have him in a 15g, as his eventual home (125g) has a couple fish in it that might be tempted to snack on him while he's teeny.
So far, he's nothing like any of my research said, he gobbled up a bunch of brine shrimp right away and has been zooming around the tank all day, resting in plain sight.
Any advice you wish you'd had when you started with bichir would be appreciated!!
My two bichirs haven’t grown more than 1.5 inch in the past 7-8 months. I’m super confused, I feed them a regular diet of carnivore pellets, tilapia and bloodworms and change the water. They are in a 40 atm but I don’t know if that is the cause of their slow growth. I am definitely concerned. They are 4.5 inches right now
This is my 125 gallon tank that holds three rope fish and four bichirs. Any ideas how to make water clearer
hello, kind people of the bichir reddit! i've been seriously considering getting a bichir as i absolutely adore them and because they look like they would scratch both my fish and reptile itch. i have experience keeping predatory fish (mainly oscars and various large south american and african cichlids) but it's been a few years and since there is so much contradictory information online i decided that it would be best to compile my list of questions and ask in here.
aside from all of those things, i'll set up some kind of strong filtration system that doesn't generate a too much of a current and adequate heating to keep the tank stable at 25°C / 77°F (if that's the right temperature?). i am outside of the US and do live in a quite isolated area so advice on certain brands might be obsolete but if i have the option to import it, i will. thank you to anyone who's taken the time to read this post and any guidance, even regarding things i didn't include here, would be much, much, much appreciated!
edit: spelling
They are still so little. Anyone know how long they take to get to full size?
